Hi, does anybody know what squish gap I should have on my Rotax 280 cc motor ? I have 1,8 mm at present but I'd like to know just exactly what the upper and lower limits are. Many thanks in advance,

  2. You guys have been a great source of help amazing me with your SWM knowledge and patience with a rookie like myself to the world of the Italian Speedies, but I have another favour to ask. I believe this TL320 pictured is a 1980....then met a guy yesterday into old twinshocks whom tells me from his memory that a 1980 SWM should be yellow with black frame (tick) but that the frame should have under engine frame tubes intact (ohh), SWM's loosing the lower under engine tubes in 1981...I should add the fella did say that 34 years on his memory could be wrong and that he owned a 1981 Gori, can any one help? I thought Gori's were always a year behind the SWM's so this one pict…

Just incase anyone is interested, I have been looking around for some non organic clutch plates for my 280 cc Rotax rebuild. Found some at Barnett Engineering which should fit the bill just nicely and have had the fact confirmed by them too. You can find them here.... http://www.barnettclutches.com/can-am.html Friction plates are #301-22-10001, $12.65 each. Steels are #410-37-047001, $6.52 each. Specify quantities. Shipping is extra. You can order on-line at www.barnettclutches or call order desk at 805-642-9435, M-Th, 8am-4pm, Pacific time. 5. I keep hearing of this test and finally found it today. What no one ever seems to mention (or I've missed) is how old this test is, published in 1978, although that may not be any cause for concern, but what is, is the use of Castor Bean oil, not mineral based oil. I used to be an automotive test engineer and then went onto pure combustion research and a few of things from this report really bug me, all from the comfort of my armchair & not really knowing jack s**t about 2 stroke R&D. I was compression and spark ignition 4 cycle only ..or dirty diesels and gasolene's, sorry petrols outside of work. OK, any test such as this, and this is a real biggie s…

Can anyone help me please, I have just bought an 81 SWM 320. The problem is that the engine and gearbox came in a vaiety of boxes and many different parts. As I have never stripped one of these before I am not sure how to put it back together, has anyone got some exploded diagrams, perhaps on cd-rom that I could use this would be very helpful thanks. In amongst the van full of bits I collected from Italy last weekend were a selection of "works" modified front pipes. The top picture shows a standard chrome finish front pipe with the modified ones either side. I had a quick attempt at fitting them on my bike, but both would need the fins removing from the head before fitting...which I might try at a later date. The third pipe fitted straight on my bike, and has a couple of extra bends before it hits the middle box, and looks similar to the production front pipe on the Jumbo 350's. It looks neater, but I cant say it runs any different.

  10. I am the new proud owner of a 1983 SMW 350 Jumbo, in all it's yellow glory. Bought it from a local rider (thanks Wayne!). The engine has been fully rebuilt and has just a couple of hours of riding on it. I guess over the next few weeks (month?) as I get familiar with the bike and start riding it / tuning it to my liking I will have many questions. This Trials Central has been a great source of help in the past so I am turning to you guys again for answers. Engine oil What engine oil do people use? I my (modern) trials bike I use Maxima MTL 80WT. How to verify oil level and refill? There are no oil level windows (unlike my Fantic) and I couldn't find …

My TL320 ran really well when I was riding at around 4000 feet above sea level recently. When I got it home to 7000 feet, I have no power at the low end, just off idle. I tried dropping my needle to lean out the mixture. I only had one notch available to drop the needle, and it didn't make much difference. I assume I will need to change the jet(s?) and wondered if there are any high-altitude riders out there who could suggest which jets I should buy to get me close to correct mixture at 7000 to 10,000 feet, which is where I expect to do the bulk of my riding. Also, can anyone suggest a source for jets? Martin, do you carry them? Thanks for all the help you guys have b…

Just finished the istall on third SWM of OKO carb. The bikes were 2 1982 280s and a 1983 240. the 240 had a stock airbox and pipe and the inprovement was huge.bike pulls from idle to full revs with no flat spots. The 280s run tons better with no problems, one stock the other has a modified rear box. Also noticed after first trial the bike used less gas than before.I also am using 2 different size OKOs on one of my xc bikes. It has a 280 rotax motor and for the tight tracks i run a 30 mm carb and its a tractor .On more open tracks I install a 32 mm and it runs down 450 4 strokes.Have to thank Roger at MAVT.org for the carbs and tuning help.

Hi guys, I thought you might like to see my latest SWM project. It started as a pretty nice 1981 TL230 but never one to just have a standard bike I decided to set out on a project to use the standard bike as the basis for something a little different. The frame was first and I decided (with the help of Rob Homer) to remove the top frame tube and the seat rails and make a tank as part of the frame with tubes welded inside to route the cables. The seat rails were replaced with straight tubes so that the new seat and side panels would sit flat and also form the top of the airbox (this dropped the seat height by about 3 inches). Whilst modifying the frame the head angle w…

Restoring a 240 Swm and the rear silencer box was full of the usual crud and also the the two baffles had come loose virtually blocking the way out for the exhaust gases. Is it best to reweld the baffles back in to their original positions or can you leave them out to let the engine breathe easier? Thanks.

I got tired of waiting for replies from a couple of sources for trials electronics and was surprised to see a mail in my inbox after almost no waiting at all. The guys at Powerdynamo in Berlin are of a different kind, both answering mails and getting things done (!). After sending my old parts to them, I got a nice, big box a couple of weeks later, old parts in return and a new system for my bike. I run a simple battery total loss set-up for lights when needed, so my new system is ignition only. If you are interested, the system is now listed among Powerdynamo's other products, so you don't have to bother sending anything to Berlin (if you need power for your lights …

Dear all, I have just found an Aprilia TXR312 from ’88, used for competition for the first 5 years or so, then stored (or forgotten) for most of the 25 years until today. Is that Rotax engine an easy transplant to an early (1981) SWM 320? If so, is such a transplant OK and within the spirit of modern twinshock rules, like electronic ignition, modern fork internals and so on…? Or should this Aprilia better be stored for another couple of years, waiting for the hype of early air-cooled monoshock bikes …? Please, tell me what you think of all this! BTW, after draining the tank and transmission, giving it a little fresh pre-mix and transmission oil, the …
