Hello everyone, I picked up my 'new' Cota 348 yesterday, I don't know what year it is, and I don't know how original it is, maybe it's a bit of a mongrel? The matching chassis and engine number is: 51M13030 I'm also slightly puzzled with the gearbox, just by pushing it round (with the plugs out), the order is N 1 2 3 N (I think) so, I'm guessing 4th has gone? The forks were seized when I got it, since then I've managed to free them, but I'm unsure if there are parts missing, are the top of the forks supposed to be open? There was a little bit of water in mine. Finally, the coil has melted because it doesn't fit on the bracket (it fouls exhaust) so someone has put o…

My '09 4RT will start easily from cold and most times after having run. Whether it is after warming up from a cold start or in the middle of a ride, it idles smoothly but when the revs pick up it misses and pops. We are at 3000 ft. elevation and the other day rode up to 8000 ft. I started it easily to move it just a short distance, shut it off and then it would not start except by bump starting and it ran very poorly at that. It is rideable but performs poorly. Any suggestions where to start looking? Thanks.

Hi all, sorry if this is a stupid question but, I'm giving my 2000 315 a full strip down rebuild. I've just rebuilt the forks with new bushes, seals, oil and a new rh fork tube. They all went back together fine but when I stood the forks next to each other, the compression fork seems a couple of inches longer than the rebound fork. Is this normal? This is the first time I've worked on a fork setup like this and I've never noticed this before.

I'm sure this has been asked before but I am new to this forum and Trials biking. Does anyone know what oils are required for a 1980s Cota 200 and what fuel mix? I'm using 50:1 at the moment. Cheers Jim

A few months ago I had an extremely smokey 348, the smoke was coking up the exhaust and causing the exhaust to overheat. I had owned the bike for over a year and had only once started it without easy start. It would normally take about 5 minutes, a lot of kicking, a lot of easy start and effort to fire up. I was advised to change the crankshaft oil seal, which should help with the smokey exhaust. The bike was in bits for 2 months while I went through 5 different gear pullers trying to get the primary gear off the crankshaft. The first puller wouldn’t fit behind the gear, 3 of the pullers snapped under the pressure, but the last was successful. I know first hand that thi…

Hi all a bit of advice required please. Re 2002 Montesa 315r. PHBL26BS Bought Bike then stripped it straight away as I wanted a good one as getting back into trials after a long time, so done all bearings etc. Just had engine re built ie. new piston, rings, mains, seals and cylinder re-plated. The thing is I cant seem to get it running rite at slow revs, But starts 1st kick, Symtoms are..... 1) Doesnt idle well, 2) Air/Fuel screw doesnt seem to do much, 3)Off choke its not picking up sharply, 4)If you rev it a bit sometimes the revs just go up and up and have to stall it with back brake. Please note.... Throttle cable free and lubed, slide snaps shut and free, slide…

Hi, im new to TC and was wanting to borrow wisdom. I got my self a bike after 12 years away and so am a little rusty, I've got a 2001 315 cota that does not like to get going (started) when cold, but as soon it's fired once it'll start next kick, and then run like a dream. The issue is it takes about 10 mins of kicking over on a good day to achieve this. I've replaced the sparkplug, new air filter as old was battered, cleaned carb and am now still dreading next time i have to get it going. The spark looks weak to me, but then i haven't done this for 12 years, any tips or ideas would be greatly received. Thank you Will

Here is the deal. 06 4rt 65hrs on it. If the bike sits for a week it is pretty tough to start. Once started it runs great. Then it will start will little trouble after it is warmed up. Here is what I have looked at so far. Spark Plugs - new ones do not help Throttle cable- clean lubed and loose. Checked valve lash- In spec Fuel pump- Tested with 12vdc and it pumps instantly Spark- Seems to need a very hard kick to spark at all when testing. If I kick softly or slowly, nothing at all. So I think I have some weak component of the ignition. Bad coil? I have looked in the book and it says to test the Primary coil. I did that and it checks out good. And it also …

Hey everyone, been reading countless reviews on starting methods and issues with montesa 4rt's. It sparking good, fuel injector straying fuel fine. Air filter removed as it was an oiled. Throttle cable has no tension. Barrel has been pressure checked injector mounting bolts where found loose and rectified I have literally tried everything I can think of other then checking t…

Hello everyone and thanks for the add. I recently acquired a Montesa 349 white wonder circa 1981. My first Montesa restoration.. I am quite alarmed at the lack of good workshop manuals in English and in depth. Just a few asks - what ratio of fuel to oil and should I use and which oil - synthetic/semi synthetic/mineral oil ?(for my other bike I use rock oil pp2) Also what other oils should I be using for other internals. Thank you.

I've been offered a montesa 4rt by a friend, and wondered if theres any faults to look out for???? I've only ever rode 2 stroke trials bikes!!! What are they worth???

  20. Started by jaylael,

Has anybody else ever encountered this problem on Montesa? It's a 2001. I bought it used and it works fine as long as you don't tighten up the clutch cover screws all the way. (specifically the one in the back center) I suspect it has a clutch cover which is out of line with the pilot hole in the center cases. It has no obvious distortion, but it still binds. I have eliminated end play as an issue, by removing the inner shim (between the inside end of the kicker shaft and the case) Now get this part, I have attempted to free it up by 'tapping' on it with a small hammer. (ahem) The result was a tikling sound under the bike, while it was laying on it's side, clutch side up…
