  1. Link: Yes, it does become bob tailed for a bit. Then comes back just as suddenly. In all, a rather unimpressive video.
  2. Interesting that they specify only up to 50:1 mix. What happens up in the 80:1 world of a modern trials bike?
  3. What other makers have attempted 2 stroke fuel injection, and failed?
  4. Did you have a problem before you started? Or, were you just trying to make a good clutch better? Read a recent article, not Beta specific, but clutch on baskets in general, that mentioned waiting until after a problem develops, to do the mod. A key point was that after a problem develops, you will find divots on the basket, where the plates have sort of hammered, and hardened, the bottom of the divots. You then file down to those low points, but not into them, so that you leave the hardened material in place. In the end, you basket is then tougher, but you have filed away the natural ramps that used to lead down to the hardened low point.
  5. When it comes to trials, AHRMA has their head so far up their behind, it is sad. Even the folks you consider to be the first class citizens get treated as second class. Show up at an event, and the trials is on Thursday, of Friday, before all the "important stuff" happens. Or hey, we want to make sure all the guys who do the "important stuff" but still like to ride trials have an opportunity, so we will delay the start of the trials, for hours on end, cause we are running behind on finishing all the "important stuff", like motocross, roadracing, etc. It didn't take too many years of my AHRMA membership to figure out that trials was not a real area of interest, for them. Adios from Texas.
  6. The old wisdom was to turn the idle down so low, that the engine would not run without a little throttle. The theory was that since the brakes were so bad, you could roll the throttle off and get full engine braking, on a downhill. With no fuel going into the cylinder, there is no power output. Instead, you are fighting against engine compression, and helping to slow the bike.
  7. Overall, I don't disagree with your mind/body argument. In fact, I completely agree. I used to have the paper, out of a fortune cookie, that said "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." No doubt that when the mind believes something, it produces physical differences. With that said, I am a little confused by some of what you are saying. In your example, you state that the folks "thought they were getting the serotonin", and thus there were results... This makes sense, because the "thought" they were getting something, when the were not. If, on the other hand, the doctor told them up front, "This is a little sugar pill. A placebo that does nothing, but we really expect it will do something for you." In this case, I would not be surprised if the patients did not respond. What I am getting to is that you appear to be saying that you know good and well that the band is just a "sugar pill", but it works anyway. Very strange logic. But, if it works, I sell rocks that you put in your pocket to help you get up 30 foot ledges. They don't really do anything, but if you put it in your pocket, and believe anyway...

    Motegi GP

No kidding. One of the best races all season. Can't believe that Rossi or Lorenzo didn't go down, the way they were running into each other!

    Beta 300 jets

Needle: 2nd slot down (from the top) with thick washer under clip and thin washer above clip.
  10. A total crock... "A sucker born every minute"

    Beta 300 jets

If you go to the Yamaha shop, the stock pilot jet from a 660 Raptor is a 22.5, and is the same carb. Took me FOREVER to source it for mine. Can't speak for the main jet, as I left mine stock. 2-3/8 turns on the fuel screw, with the 22.5 pilot, and stock main, was perfect. - Darrell
  12. Went with a 250. Nothing I do requires a 290. Went back to a 2-stroke for practical reasons. Never had problems selling my 4-strokes in the past, but I guess the market is shrinking, cause it took two years when I went to sell this last one. Even then, that was drastically discounting it below it's real value. So, pay more up front, and take a greater loss in the end, just doesn't make financial sense. A shame, cause I MUCH prefer a 4-stroke.

    UTE Cup

Yep. I been shafted by that one. Tough to ride a clean trial, and end up with third place cause a couple of guys were a year older than you.
  14. Whoa! Wait a minute. It has faded. In fact, it's gone. Off to California, to it's new owner. New 2011 Beta on the way, and what's this? It's a 2-stroke! After 7 years as a 4-stroke fan, I am returning to the dark side. Can't wait to see how I get along with it, after so long on nothing but thumpers.
  15. What kind of bikes, from Japan?
  16. Not sure you want to call it an advantage, but the difference is that you have no clutch lever. The bike becomes like a kids bike, with a centrifical clutch. Turn the throttle, and it goes. Close the throttle, and it quits pulling. Neat thing is that the now vacant location, where the clutch lever was, can be used to control the rear brake. Front brake on the right, rear brake on the left. I recently rode a KTM woods bike with a Rekluse fitted to it. Very interesting experience. Loved the rear brake under my left hand. Down side was that while in 1st gear, turning tight, the transition on and off the clutch was pretty violent. On the other hand, you could put it in 2nd or 3rd, and it would still pull from a dead stop. Interesting for a trail bike, but I could not see one on a trials bike, used in competition. With all that said, to the original posters question, you could get a Scorpa trials bike, that uses the Yamaha 4-stroke engine (125 or 250), and likely find that the Rekluse clutch. made for the original Yamaha application, would work. No mechanical difference in that area, when it comes to Scorpa's use of the engine. The longride kit, with the bigger tank and seat, would make it ideal.
  17. The 315R is an excellent bike for "build/reliability", as you have rightly concluded. It's ride, and engine, characteristics are great for the beginning trials rider, as well. With that said, I concure with the other poster, on the little Scorpa. I had an SY175F for about 18 months, and found it to be a great bike. Either would be excellent for a rider starting out.
  18. Yes. Beta make their own engines, so you will not cross it to some other bike, or brand, in this case.
  19. I think it is Nat King Cole.
  20. Strange. Prior to switching to 4-strokes, that was all I used for 6 straight years, and never had an issue with any of my bikes, trials or enduro.
  21. As stated in the post... "usually you just wrap a wire around the plug lead to let you know what the tickover is"
  22. Close, but I would say the Scorpa SY250F 4-stroke is bigger, and heavier, with it's 5 valves and associated hardware.
  23. Just in case you were not warned, due to the fuel injection, NEVER touch the throttle while trying to kickstart the bike. 1) Don't kick the bike hard. Just push through the kickstart smooth and even. 2) If it does not start in just a few kicks, reset the injection by opening the throttle WIDE OPEN, and pushing the starter easy through the stroke once. Most of the time that they will not start, and smell as you describe, is due to the engine dying with the fuel injection in the midst of a brain fart mapping wise. Pushing the starter through once, with the throttle open, clears the map and resets everything back to the idle state. After that, will almost always start right up.
  24. Didn't have that problem, but mine had a split in the little rubber cap that pressed down on the vent tube, that points straight up, right next to the large black cap over the CV chamber. Assume this vent is to connect multiple carbs together. At any rate, messed up how the bike ran, so keep an eye out for that one, as well.
  25. Now that he has moved to Ducati, I am curious to see how long it is going to take him to adapt to the change. As long as it took Nikki, or will he be on the podium sooner?
