  1. Not sure drag going to be an issue when hitting a step flat out in 3rd with a 14stone rider. I think localised pressure is going to be the big issue. Mechanical advantage must mean that the PSI or KGMM2 at the actual bearing point must be big. Hence hardened bushes/needle rollers as std. Trouble is needle rollers are better suited to a some sort of rotation which is not seen in suspension. Good luck with experiment as good mods are worth while. I know some people offer sealed for life linkages - be interesting to see whats in them. Best solution I've seen was mono Yam - called grease nipples - grease every week - grit out, fresh grease in!!
  2. Seem to recall cable can get wedged between frame and tank. Just put your hand under frame on left side when putting tank on just to pull a little slack in the cable to stop it getting wedged. 5 year since I had 315r but think this helped. Best of luck

    spring?

spring is in master cyl - no external ones fitted that I can remember. Check links to pdf manuals elsewhere on TC to confirm
  4. probably saw the the possibility of rain and didn't want to push the bike back to the start like last btc
  5. Have posted elsewhere on BTC but agree totally with Woody. I love the Traditional trials rounds, I can also ride the odd S3 rounds without killing myself - especially if a clubman route is included so what ever happens with the BTC don't mess with the rest - top 15 or 20 riders might disagree but the several hundred others may agree.
  6. I welded on new brackets and fitted 315r Mont footrests but you wouldn't want to weld to your nicely painted frame. I see there are bolt on footrest that give similar benefits. However fancy ally or titanium footrests in my mind are OK when new but allow no home refurb when welding is needed to raise then back up when they wear.

    BTC Round

As a rider, enthusiast, official and BTC C of C I really don't know the answer. Scores from Sunday look spot on so congrats to Torridge who I know are a super keen bunch and have full respect for. However I think there are too many objectives to be achieved in BTC these days. Top boys want to be pushed and have a chance to pull a mistake back - even in Expert A and B Clubs want it to be feasible -good entries Onlookers want it to be what they want!! I think the format the last few years has been ok but not sure if this is sustainable in the future. The current ability of top riders and bikes means that given enough time the good riders will get through any section that does not physically knock them off. If you mark out a tricky traditional style section that could take the odd mark if ridden in a flowing manner will be broken down into 20 hop and stop bits and then be told the section is too long for 90 second time limit. I think with stop allowed its down to big stuff (and yes they do go backwards), or no stop with all its possible observing issues but with less extreme sections. - I guess take your pick!!
  8. Tips for a first timer - get as fit as you can and then some. Practice riding as fast and as hard as you can for 2 hours then when you are worn out do it it for 2 more hours and then when you are absolutely worn out carry on again for 2 more hours. See if you can ride a few local time and obs trials. Also ideally watch it the year before you enter to get a feel. Its a special trial so don't underestimate it. Unlike anything else but absolutely amazing

    2012 4RT

I do like my 4rts but this is a bit of an anticlimax. Most of weight saving is probably from X lite tyres. Milling aluminum don't save much. Could have at least fitted flat tanks as std. Maybe have to be 2013 for the reverse cylinder motor then!!!!

    4RT Gearing

I like std gearing but ride most things in 1st. Not sure about R1 chain but the std Montesa chain is good value. Normally get a year out of mine.

    starting

Agree Air filter oil does not evaporate but solvent carrier does when you use spray filter oil. It seems to be the build up of the solvent in air box that upsets things. When stopping the bike with the kill button is there a programmed stop? - ie fuel off or does it just stop the spark like a basic carb bike?

    starting

so why does a lightly oiled filter put straight in mean the bike will not start but same filter in 1hr later and no issue. Stop the bike by stalling it an not best starter. Stop bike with kill button and starts every time. Bike won't start, flick throttle and press kill button. Starts next kick

    4RT dead

Maybe you mate didn't get bike warmed up and stalled it rather then stopped with kill button and fouled plug or similar. Be interesting to get bike running and warm and try old plug back in. As a side note I put very a very freshly oiled filter in mine Friday night (rushing a bit) and bike was a pig to start first thing sat am. Was maybe firing occasionally. This I find is very common with solvent type filter oils. I just kept turning engine over slowly with max throttle and then reset and normal start. Fired up eventually and been fine ever since.

    4RT dead

Have you tried a new plug?
  15. Steve - no offence taken or even considered. Anyway the club doesn't do the results so that was at least one thing I didn't need to worry about yesterday. I think we'll adopt the F1 strategy next time we have bad weather and sit in a portacabin drinking coffee until it dries up. Was there anywhere it didn't rain yesterday.
  16. you know we are a bit slow in Wales!!!!! I think alex would of been glad if he was on a beta as for the 2nd year running Sherco number 1 rider had bike problems
  17. Personal experience on 2 05 4rts Genuine 06 Montesa clutch are about
  18. There is wet weather and there is what we had today - when the venue is limited to the streams/rivers and banks it is limited as to what you can change at the last minute(section are not just stuck in on the Saturday morning). The sections where changed yesterday after practice with all riders invited for their comments and all the riders requests to change sections where met before we left the venue last night (and the riders knew it was going to rain). Sections where further eased today before the start and eased again on the first lap when the champ boys got to some of the sections. But when the rivers and stream go into flood condition not sure what you suggest can be done. Best we could do was cut to 2 laps on safety grounds. Easy to pick fault but we are all volunteers and the putting on a BTC has probably involved nearly 900 miles personally traveling to the venue to mark out, attend practice and the trial over the last 5 weeks don't want to contemplate the number of hours put in.
  19. Tell you tomorrow at the finish
  20. Yep - a bit boggy down in the woods. Insect repellent also a worthy selection as the midges might be out and about
  21. St Davids 2011 12 section done and dusted and all marked out for Saturdays practice and Sundays trial. 3 brand new ones and the rest all heavily modified. Some mega climbs and lots of banks and mud. Forecast is good for Saturday but looking like rain for Sunday. Sections have a good selection of traditional style hazards and a wet day may make the results interesting as if wet then grip will be at a premium Come along and watch Dibs and co get stuck into the sections.
  22. I made a tool to hold clutch but couldn't remember if it was needed to change plates. If center nut needs to come off - which I/m not sure of as would imagine it holds the basket and not pressure plate - then full case needs to come off and water pipes need to be connected. I made a tool out of a bit of ally plate that bolted onto 3 of the clutch spring mounting holes - again makes me think center nut can stay on for plate change. - and bolted a bit of 25mm box as a handle that was long enough to rest on footrest to lock it all in place.
  23. Not sure why you want to change plates but I think dead easy if I can recall without looking at the manual. Just take off smaller cover on clutch case -o ring seal so no gasket needed. Undo several small bolts (6 or 8) holding pressure plate on - undo several turns alternating as you would with wheel nuts. Plate comes off, clutch plates lift out. Repeat in reverse to re assemble.
  24. After some 15 years of Montesa using flanged rear wheel rims that do not leak it appears the rest of the world has finally woken up as nearly all the new bikes now have these rims. Why has it taken so long to adopt a better technical solution? Maybe 2020 they will all be making 4 strokes?
  25. Glad to hear it Justin - will have to come up or come down for a trial together. Cheers Jimmy Knew I could persuade you with some good 4rt graded hill climbs
