Hello can any 1 Help I have a Ty 175 that ive just restored the Engine as had new piston the rest was ok ive started it up runs fine but when I put it into gear it jumped forward and stalled so am assuming its the clutch. it was fine before but its been stood for a long time could it be the clutch plates stuck together may need a clean? the only thing I did was to take the clutch Arm out to clean and put it back the grub screw that screws into the clutch Arm could this have anything to do with the clutch nor working? any help would be much appreciated.

So, my maiden weekend voyage on a new-to-me 47 year old TY250, I managed to find the weak link in the aftermarket shift pedal... What I'm trying to find is anyone and everyone out there with background on replacing one on their TY, and which one they went with... Also my first bike in general and I'm kicking myself for taking so long. Short of ordering random ones off the internet and trying them the next time I get a day off... Which doesn't sound like something I want to gamble on... Because I'd rather ride. 😁

I'm looking to make my TY175 road legal and have got the original lights working but not the horn. I've tried a good quality 6v horn but no sound. I'm guessing it doesn't like the Alternating current non-regulated voltage electrics. Has anyone got any tips?

The ball plunger/ spring mechanism on my TY175 kick starter is not doing a great job of keeping the kick starter rotated in out of the way when riding. I tried a stronger spring but it is still not great. Is there a way to improve that function? I wonder about deepening the hole that the ball drops into when rotated in but don't know if that would help or make it worse. The fit of the kick-start lever to the shaft it rotates on is not like new but not bad for an old bike. I had a similar issue with a TLR200 but never came up with a good fix.

I've just been idly meandering around the internet where I discovered a very interesting bike: a 525cc Yamaha trials twinshock, built by a talented French engineer, Frédéric Fleury (?) - see link below. Apparently it was based on a Yamaha XT500. Which reminded me of a photo I saw years ago in a Mick Andrews trials book (forgotten its title, but I remember the book was small which contrasted with the bigger books by Sammy Miller and Don Smith - I still have all three somewhere upstairs). The photo was of a partly constructed 500 trials bike that Mick was building, based on an XT500. For years I wondered if that build was ever completed - apparently it wasn't du…

I picked up a 74 model 250 a few months ago from an ad on OfferUp. The ad made it sound like it just needed an air filter and a quickdusting off but after an hour and a half drive I found a badly neglected bike missing lots of parts and a seized up top end, no paperwork and the back wheel was locked up even though the chain was missing. I reluctantly gave the seller a few bucks and dragged the bike into the van. I hate returning empty handed in these cases. When I got it home I tried removing the cylinder but it was welded onto the piston. I could see that the crank was not seized but it was going to take some serious punishment from the cylinder removal process. Aft…

Hello members, New to this forum and awaiting delivery of my first trials bike. I was able to download a PDF of a Parts Manual and now I need a basic "quick start" type owner's manual which covers the basic service requirements of the TY250a. I have never owned a motorcycle and can't wait to join this community. Thanks ahead.

Hello, I recently bought a 78 TY 250. It is next to impossible to start cold unless you push it. Once it is running, it goes great. I cleaned the carb and checked the compression. The compression is 90. I have a new top end off a 2nd donor bike that is new I was going to swap out. I cannot find the specs for compression anywhere. Is the 90 compression the problem and if so, I have not been able to find the head gasket and bottom gasket. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Don

Just a word of thanks to all the Sages on here for their advice & knowledge. I have fitted an RD350 inlet rubber to my TY 175 and it DOES make a difference. Put some more holes in the airbox too. There is an induction noise now, excellent ! Cheers !

So another general question- #2 I have OKO 26mm on my TY 250 A and still trying to get the best operation out of it. It starts on about the 5th kick when cold, but when hot you need to open the throttle to maybe 1/3rd to get it to catch. There is no longer any kick back - but that is mostly due to the new Rex's ignition. But my concern now is that if you are just running on flat ground, the engine will fire every other revolution. This is annoying because of the vibration that is set up while this is going on. If you advance the throttle, the engine fires every stroke and smooths out, or uphill- same thing sounds solid and smooth- , but you onl…

So this is just an update on my install and first tests of the Clubman ignition from Rex's Speed Shop. I was not sponsored, so this is on my own nickel. This kit has actually exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with the results. The install is very simple and most of the pictures are easy to understand. The first part of the install is to remove the magneto rotor with your special puller tool., swap out the old ignition back plate with the new one and bolt it down with the new hardware provided. I used a little blue Loctite on the three screws just for a little peace of mind. The new ignition plate is way less busy than the stock one as it does not have…

Yesterday while raising my bike onto the support stand I heard a crack sound- looked down and there was a crack straight thru one of the corner bolt holes in my original fiberglass plate. So I figured that if it is breaking just lifting the bike onto the stand- what's it going to do on a rock or tree trunk in the field? Anyway- not too long ago somebody in Australia had mentioned that they had made some new aluminum skid plates for an A model TY 250. I am now officially ready for one if they are still available. If not, what is the best thickness of material to make one of these plates? Any patterns or measurements would also be helpful. I'm thinking 6061 T6 but not…

Hello friends, Having read on here about the modifications people do to the weight of the flywheel to affect performance, could someone comment if my flywheel has been adjusted or if this is standard? it appears to have some holes drilled in it and doesn't look exactly like the pic in the parts manual. i know the previous owner was serious enough to swap the front 14 tooth sprocket to a 12 so I'm curious as to whether the flywheel was modified also or is standard. And would someone be kind enough to briefly recap the difference between a heavier or lighter flywheel and the effect it has on the bikes performance? (I'm still a little unsure) with many thank…

Hi all, I am rebuilding a TY250 Twinshock engine but I am trying to source the two Transmission roller bearings. Fig 6 item 12 P/N 93311-42018 has a number stamped on which is 20NQ3212. This bearing is available through bearing suppliers and TYtrials sell it as the Yamaha P/N. Fig 6 item 27 P/N 93313-31709 doesn't have a number stamped on it, it just has IKO. I have searched for the Yam P/N and there are a few available in the USA but obviously an expensive option. Does anyone know the generic P/N for this bearing which would give me the option of obtaining from a UK bearing supplier?

So today I had the left side cover off and wondered if the points needed any attention- It had been a couple of months since I attempted to set them up, and I re-read the instructions in my 75 shop manual again just to refresh my memory. But laying on the garage floor trying to peek into a small hole in the flywheel is not much fun, nor is trying to guess at the timing. Probably the worst part is that the slot in the points plate is wider than the securing screw by about 1mm. This allows the breaker plate to move in both a left-right direction and also up and down which ruins any repeatability of the settings. Reason for this is that the wiper on the poi…

Guys- I think the TY 250 can run either a #428 chain or a #520 chain. Are there any advantages one way or the other? favorite? and why? Best sources? Right now I mostly ride single track and fire roads with a stock 53 tooth on the rear and 12 in the front, but my 53 is about worn out and the chain is about ready to go with it too, so I'm wondering where I can find replacements for all 3 parts if possible. My instinct tells me to stay with steel for the rear sprocket for longevity if nothing else. Any comments are much appreciated!
