I have a '74 Montesa Cota 247. I have owned it for approximately 28 years. After many years of mediocre service, my Amal carb began to give me serious problems at my last trials event. I am running with the stock Amal carb (rebuilt, in great condition). At the previously mentioned event, the throttle response deteriorated rapidly as the sections clicked by. It took longer and longer for the revs to fall as the day went on. It was not a hot day. By the third loop, I could barely maintain "3's" and control the bike, as the lingering revs would propel me MUCH farther into a turn than I anticipated. I am aware of the consequences of over tightening the carb flange mou…

Got loads of parts for the engine rebuild, and have a question about the crank seals. Where the crank bearings sit the shaft diameter is 25mm, and where the seals contact its slightly less, around 24.95mm, presumably to allow the bearing to slide on easier. The seal areas have now been ground down to 24.85mm The original seals were double-lipped (ie two opposite facing lips, with springs), and 25mm internal diameter. The new seals are single lipped and 24mm internal diameter

Hi - my 247 was a bit reluctant to start on the weekend so I replaced the plug and away we went. However whenever I stopped to open a gate etc it died, which is not normal then after about 20 minutes riding I left it switched off while I explored some new tracks by foot. When I returned no sign of spark and a long push home. I have removed flywheel, cleaned and checked everything but very very week spark. I removed kill switch and condensor from earth and measured voltage from the stator coil but it is less than .5 volts. Can anyone tell me what the output from the stator coil should read - alternatively how many ohms in a healthy coil. Cheers Andrew

  9. Look i've got to tell somebody. Got bored in the shed to day waiting for bits to be machined to finish the B40 off. Cant bring myself to start stripping the Ossa Gripper (see other post) so finally got round to trying to start the Cota 349 i rebuilt last year. Dont know why but been putting off trying to get it to start after i rebuilt the engine. I suppose till you start it "done a great job, star mechanic!" then you try and either 1. it wont start or 2. starts makes a really nasty noise and stops abruptly. Well no excuses found some petrol in a can, smells alright (funny feel a lot happier now?) add a bit extra oil just in case. Thats good no petrol leaks. Kick, Kick,…

Hi All I have a ty250a with the piston stamped 25. Does anyone know if that is the first oversize? Also trying to remove the cylinder, one of the recessed bolts has been nicely rounded by a previous owner. Any ideas on how to get it off please? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Not been on here a while, but some may remember my trials and tribulations trying to get this old bike back up and running: http://www.trialscen...-gears-damaged/ http://www.trialscen...y-gear-removal/ http://www.trialscen...9-crank-damage/ …and some more… Anyway, the engine is ON THE BENCH with a genuine intention to put all the many bits back together, and I can’t recall where these things go: Well, I’m pretty sure they go between the main bearings and the crankshaft seal carriers, can anyone confirm? And if so, why??! But what puzzles me is that there at least two different thicknesses of these shim things and I’ve no idea what I’m “shimming”. Note that the p…

Hello again, if anyone can remember I have a 242 mont that was in need of an engine rebuild. That has been done and the engine is back in the bike. I`m having real problems setting the timing tho, its got a nice fat spark and sucks petrol through spot on but ive only managed to have it running once and it backfired and snapped the woodruff key. I`m finding it really hard to measure the timing through the plug hole as its on the side of the squish band and seems to be at TDC for longer than it should. Anybody know an easy way of setting the timing on these bikes or is it just a case of trial and error. I`m aiming for a 0.38 inch contact gap and the points to open 2.5m…

  15. right im getting a bit confused on what route to enter my majesty 250 in? i done a local trial and entered the red route (middle) and although i cleaned a few sections i also got a fair few 2-3's and 3 sections were almost impossible! this last few may have been down to lack of experirence? on the easy route there was quite a few brand new (modern) bikes being ridden! this got me thinking should i be on the easy route and try a few harder sections? (bearing in mind im on a 27 year old bike with drum brakes etc! etc!) as and when i come across them? this trial was an inter trial with 50/50 routes! the trial wasnt a twinshock/classic one, if your a clubman/sportsman…
