Twinshock

  1. Started by hughesy,

I was about to start a 330 restoration shortly having bought the bike a couple of years ago. I knew that the Swing Arm bearings were shot when I bought it but on closer inspection I can now see that the chain has eaten it's way through the underneath of the swing arm at the pivot/ bearing area. There was no rubber fitted and the manual doesn't show one that I can find. Where might a find a replacement or can anyone recommend an engineering workshop that could repair bearing in mind that the swing arm is aluminium. Does the 242 swing arm fit? Also found the fork casting around fork pinch bolt had been glued back in place and fell off when I prodded it! The other leg has …

How might the Montesa 348 compare to a similar period Bultaco, is the 348 a good bike to own and ride?

I have a bike fitted with a 110mm conical Grimeca hub which is very similar to those fitted to a Fantic. It differs in the following ways; the strengthening hubs internally are much larger, there are small strengthening ribs visible on the outside of the hub, the distance between the spoke sets left and right is narrower resulting in a narrower hub. It was originally white. Fantic sprocket and back plate fit. The bike was constructed in about 1983 or 1984. Does anyone have one for sale or know of a model it was fitted to.

Hello Yesterday i purchased a Montesa 200 but the engine appears to be a lot bigger than a 200,is there any way to identify the engine size? How do i set up the carb for correct running? I will attempt to post some pictures tonight for your perusal as the bike is in very good condition for a 25 year old trials bike Thanks Mark

Hi, has anyone else suffered from their KT tank leaking. It looks as though mine has a slight crack where the rubber strap pulls over. As its going to need welding can anyone help with the original colour codes or where I would be able to buy the tank decals. Thanks Andy

I just saw a post in Montesa forum re: using ATF in a 315r and it reminded me to post my findings using ATF in my Cota 247. I had read in other forums 247 owners using ATF in both clutch and gearbox and so I gave it a try. First thing I noticed was the gears starting jumping ie: from one gear to another under power (usually 3rd and 4th ) and it was very difficult to select neutral once warm. I have no gasket for clutch cover so have been using silicon successfully in the past but this time it failed and so I had to redo and refill the clutch but I was out of ATF and so the original manual states SAE-10W30 but in the past I used GTX (not GTX2). Interesting well over a …

I've just spent most of today repairing and tidying what appears to be an early Ty250 Yam based Majesty frame.Stripped threads, missing captive nuts and sawn off rear frame loop. All sorted now,but while I was doing it I noticed quite a difference in the quality of the work on the parts that are modded from the original layout. The welds and brackets for the rear shocks are nicely made and well done for example, but the join at the rear of the toolbox under the top tube is a bit "Orrible".I'm doing it for a mate and I've never really taken much notice of the frames before,(Only the new ones at Telford etc)it got me wondering if its a proper Shirt modified one or a copy. Is t…

Hello people, This one might test the old dinosours (like me) out there. I have bought the above mentioned Gilera and was told it is about a 70-72 model trial/trail (I really don't know much about them). It has a four stroke motor, lights, electrics etc and I am wondering if anyone has any idea where spares can be obtained. I will try to post some photos once this camera of mine recharges its batteries, Thanks

I'm just about to order some new fork seals and was wondering why there are 2 in each leg? Is it because 80s seals werent up to it? If so I would fit only 1 to reduce friction???? (with suitable spacer). Ian

  16. Had the hub welded twice. The first weld lasted good but the 2nd weld is disintergrating into thin air . It was painted immediately after welding. The weld took well and its only thin so preheating perhaps isnt really needed ?Ive read that preheating the mag to 200 degrees in only needed on thick material. Ive never seen anything like this before and the welder who didnt seem ti understand it either .The weld is magnesium as ive done the vinegar test. My guess is that perhaps the wrong mix of mag / alloy rod was used OR it been contaminated. I find the contamination theory strange as the hub was taken back to the brake liner , so all was there was the steel. I dont wa…

Apologies in advance I did post this in the Honda forum but I was hoping for more response before I pull the engine out and split cases - has anyone experienced this with their TLR "quite suddenly my TLR200 can only select first & second gears. It simply refuses to select third the gear shift will not move up" ie: it moves up and down as normal between 1st and second but refuses to move up into third

I've got a question for all you guys who've fitted after market front pipes to your Yamaha TY 250's (Majesty's or not) I see there are basically 3 variations, standard, long (where it exits goes to bike left side up then over and back to right side and short where it exists and comes up through the front framer tubes and back to middle box. What are the pro's and cons of each from a bike response / riding style perspective. Also is it a must to have the WEs mid box with either the long or short variation? Thanks

I have decided to get the Seeley out and it has still got the original tyres on so I need to change them. Just wondering what you Seeley riders are using and are happy with. I believe tubed tyres are getting harder to find in some makes and some t/ less dont work on tube rims. Thanks in advance.
