Twinshock

  1. Started by majesty320,

Hi all I am thinking about having the front wheel rebuilt on my Majesty, and was wondering if I fitted a conical hub could I still use the Yamaha rim which origionally had a full width hub or would I have to buy a new rim. Thanks. (please dont reply if you are going to say that this is against the spirit of twinshock trials, as I have numerous pictures of Mick Andrews and Shirty etc on bikes with conical hubs and leading axle forks back in the day. You know who you are)

I'm afraid i just have to get this frustration off my chest. I'll not mention names to avoid embarrassment to TC but.......... Decades ago I used to deal with a supplier of bits and, as often as not, they had to go back as they were either just the wrong thing or fitted so badly. Now that the management has changed I thought I would try again and have just spent a fair bit of time form filling on their website (which would not let me set up an account to save all this, though the facility to do so was ostensibly there) to get to the final point of payment and find that it is procedure to phone them with card details rather than complete the transaction electronically. …

HI Guys, I seem to have an ignition problem with my early 70's Cota 247. I had a spark....a good one.....and then I didn't! Not totally sure, but suspect it may well be the condenser....so have another ordered to test. but.... I know that there is a suggested mod, where you take the condenser out and place it up higher on the bike, rather than down behind the rotor. Could someone give me a quick run-down on how you do this. Where do you put it? What kind of wire do you use? Where do you lay the wire - how does it get out from behind rotor and through cover? Thanks tons cheers eib

I am looking for some photos of the works ossa monoshocks (Cheney frame) which were around in the mid seventies. Does any one have any images that show how the bikes were put together. I would also like to contact any of the riders or Roger Holden. Thanks for your help.

  12. I originally placed this on the Sherco/Bultaco page but think it has got buried there. I am thinking of getting the electronic ignition system for my 199A 350 Sherpa does anyone know, do they fit straight on ? what effect (if any) to the bottom end power better or worse ? is it easy to time correctly ?

Any thought on troubleshooting a no spark on '67 Mountain Cub. I need a wiring diagram also. I have 5 wires coming from alternator, what is the black/yellow wire? I lost the spark when I removed the clutch cover and pulled wire bundle through small side cover hole, I did this very carefully and don't think I broke a wire? I get an AC voltage on all wires when I kick bike over. Maybe the coil is bad? Bike was running good until I worked on it last. Mick

I'm just back from a great weekend at the Nostalgia. There was a converted mono ty Yam riding in the twinshock class. This is the first one I have seen. Are they common down south? I'm not one for total originality etc but surely this is a step too far?

Hi - As a way of introduction I am located in Cape Town SA - I have dabbled in trials a for years & have recently been given a twin shock Montesa & plan to get it sorted & ride it. It is either a 348 or 349 - the engine number is 51M26351 - not sure what year (77 ?) I owned one of these way back (before I had a Fantic) but cant remember all of its quirks. Can anyone help me on what to look for on the bike & mods done to them over the years. Thanks & Regards Ian

Well am new to all this forum stuff, so hear goes, I found a old Armstrong 320 frame in the garage the head stock has broken at some point and had been welded up (not a good job) so have decided to remove the lower tube and alter the angle of the forks to give a more modern riding style with better steering. Not to sure if to copy the beta rev 3 angle or just bring in few degrees also whot is the best way to weld the frame Thanks.

Hi - I have finally fitted a new tank/seat to my 76 Cota 247 and I have a new set of badges (soft sort of plastic) ready to apply. The tank is new and so very shiny and woudld hate for the badges to fall off somewhere in the paddock so rather than resorting to my trustee cyanoacrylate (superglue) I thought I better ask advice eg: should I roughen the nice new shiny surface where the badges are fitted? And what glue is going to work best with a fibreglass fuel tank?

Hi, I've been told that a DT 175mx barrel fits straight onto a TY 175 and gives it more power due to the porting. Has anyone done this and if so is it a worth while mod? I've also been told that a lot of people used to lengthen the swing arm by an inch or so to help keep the front end down, does this work and does it affect the steering in any way? Thanks in advance.

I'm waiting for my new Raga replica so I drove down to Mercer this morning to watch a classic and twinshock trial. Mercer's about 60km south of Auckland. Some of the tackle that was there was very rare indeed, for example this 500T Norton ('bout a 1949 vintage): There were also 4 198/199 Bultacos there. This was possibly the cleanest example: Also there was a lovely Greeves. The Greeves was ridden by NZ reigning enduro champ Chris Birch whose father is pictured on the 198A Bulto Peter Birch on the 198A Sherpa Also pictured, the great view from the venue. As well as a few local enthusiasts.

Can anyone tell me if there is an alternative solid state ignition system on the market that wil fit straight into a 1973 Mk1 Ossa MAR to replace the troublesome Motoplat system ? I am aware I can get my Stator and HT Coil repaired in Spain, however, I am interested to know where I can obtain Mk1 Ossa MAR ignition parts ?? Thanks Brian H
