Pre-65 Bikes

Hi All, have a small oil leak from top of push rod tube so decided so that bike can stay running I would refurbish a spare head that came with it, so I could upgrade when I get round to repairing the leak. On inspection of the spare head and the removal of the valves (guides came with them) it turns out both valve guides were loose in the head, exhaust guide snapped in half at the line of a spring clip and the inlet valve spring broken. Looking down the inlet port it has been reworked with all of the aluminium boss for the guide removed and the guide was tapered to increase flow. So FINALLY got me James frame in the shed Now i need to paint it Dont want to powder coat as i will need to modify, you know how it is, adding brackets taking away etc etc. Stove enameling is out too for the same reason. Wanted something i could brush paint so it is easy to touch up the rock damage thats the problem with living in Derbyshire. Also easy to repaint an area that gets damaged due to welding / modifying etc. Tried smoothrite in the past but the bonding qualities are hit and miss plus it seems to chip off at the first sign of a rock or tree interface moment so what does the panel recommend? Long story short: I decided to paint my Armac Cub tank (Holtworks?). The colour was chosen to commemorate a friend of mine who passed away this year and had his Cub the same blue. I got a couple of quotes (at around 200 pounds) then decided to have a go myself! I got most of the materials from a local automotive paint supplier and the pinstripe and tank stickers from Ebay. I used rattle cans for an etch primer and also bought the rattle can equivalent of 2K colour and lacquer. (I don't know how you can get a 2 part paint into a rattle can either!) I have always liked the 'Gulf'' colours on Triumph Bonneville's so thought I'd do mine in a similar style. …

Are PAL mags worth the money when fitted to a 350AJ. What are the benefits over a std mag? Worth bothering or go straight for a PVL set up? Your thoughts please.

The alloy billet fork yokes that are sold by a number of people are usually available with steering stem parallel to the fork tubes or run out of usually around 1.5° I have basic knowledge of how trail is calculated but so many people have varied opinion on this so if you have tried both types what did you find, which option seemed the better?

I have recently purchased a used peco style silencer box in steel, to adapt for my B175 and would like to know how much baffle is required for trials use. The reason I ask, is that the box at present, whilst packed, is straight through. I have located a small removable baffle which is available for quietening 4 stroke pipes on road bikes and wonder if it would fit the bill, or is it necessary to have the tailpipe offset from the inlet on the box on a stroker. I admit to having no real knowledge of silencers on trials machines and would appreciate comments please on the subject. Thanks. Steve

Hi , as above my cub has one of Petes clutches .Question is does anybody else run one these with an Armac lightener ?, I can't seem to be able to get the action right ,if I adjust so as the bike will kick start ok this results in there not being enough leverage to disengage properly . Iam having doubts that this type of clutch will work with the said llightener . Any feedback or help would be great . Thanks .

HELP PLEASE. Does anyone have a photo or photos of Peter Stirland on his 1962 works Royal Enfield 250 Crusader trials bike that they would be happy to share ? I have just acquired the engine from the bike and am looking for an image of the full machine with a view to building it up. The engine came from Mick Peeling who removed it from the bike decades ago and used the frame for another purpose. Interestingly it has a manual-advance/retard augmentation. All help appreciated.

hopefully the answers will be an easy fix.. i have a steel tank that i want to use on my latest project. It has been in the garage for YEARS the fuel was all gummed up and the tank had some surface rust. On the inside it has surface rust i'e bathed and swilled it out with petroil several times and got tonnes of rust out i've flushed it out with a high pressure water jet and filled it with pebbles and shaken vigoursly and washed and flushed etc etc about 2 hours in all. its improving but theres still a away to go though the bits that have cleaned up are now bright and shiny.. anything else i can do or am i bought into repeating the above evry night for the winter?

Hi Guy's, Have any of you got any photos of Paul (Heinz) Heys's Winning Triumph Cub. You know what I am like by now, I just need to see what makes this bike tick. I am not saying that Paul is not a brilliant rider ,because he must be to have won. And the bike being 230cc makes that a bit trick? has anyone information about whats in the engine,etc. Perhaps Classic Dirt Bike might test it later for us ,with Pauls permision. I removed top end to find source of rattle (bent push rod) and while checking conrod this piston was revealed. I am wondering is this a stock item or has it been machined specifically (for what purpose). The numbers are AE 16945 413 IL82 GI and top is marked STD 5LL. I have tried looking up web for catalogues to no avail as I would like to replace rings. Any Ideas as to where I can source these.

I'm rebuilding a bsa c15 at the min the bore is 67.13 which I believe to be +5 tho however u cannot get that size rings closest is standard or plus 20tho.. what should I buy? Cheers luke

Hi, I'm really keen on getting a Rigid (I like a challenge!) and while top choice would be something like a nice big Matchless, funds just aren't going to stretch that far at the moment. I've been looking at little Bantam's and the most available option at the right price is by far a plunger framed version. Are plunger frames going to be any use or will I be fighting a losing battle? I will be buying it as a bit of a project but will be trying to keep it reasonably standard so would rather not start replacing the rear loops to get rid of the plungers. Any opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Could anyone out there in bogwheel land, please advise me as to the best modifications to do to my 1961 Bantam D7 frame for trials use. I have seen some really good photographs of frames on the Yorshire Classic web site and would like to add some more ground clearence to my frame by removing the lower footrest portion. I was thinking of adding two bashplate tubes under the cases and replacing the feeble front engine mount, with proper engine plates, cross drilling the downtube and welding in crosstubes for the bolts.
