I'm now about to start building a shortstroke 500 Ariel. This afternoon I laid out all the bits I've got so far,so I can make a list of what I need.I then started looking at the 350 crank and rod I bought ages ago,it occurred to me how much of the flywheels is cut away compared to the crank in my AJS. I wonder if anyone has compared the weight of a complete shortstroke engine to the original long stroke ? Must be quite a bit lighter with an inch less of barrel aswell. Also wondering if people use the same carb with similar settings ?

Tight clutch plates I am trying to replace my clutch plates and after fitting, new clutch plates the clutch drags. The new clutch plates are very tight! do I need to file them down on the 3 corners ? of the sqaure lugs or just the sides. When I fitted them with the clutch hot they slid in OK. But when cold were tight. Will I damage the plates by filing them?. Are there any clutch advice sites anywere, have looked on Google no luck.

the tail pipe on my villers engined bike is so close to the tyre as it passes inside the frame that it is wearing through. My question is does the tail pipe at the exit of the silencer serve an purpose? does its length effect performance? clearly if i mod it to fit easily inside the frame i will reduce its volume which i believe will restrict performance would shortening it so that only an inch extends from the silencer have any affect on performance?

Hi, I am looking for 2 x C15 gears to put in my Distributer type engine. Well actually I would like a complete wide ratio box for the bike but hens teeth are easier (and cheaper) to find!! I am looking for a 20T part No 40-3101 & 30T Part No 40-3100 These were fitted as 2nd gear in the wide ratio box. I have tried all the shops who advertise in Classic bike and Old bike mart hoping to find some NOS but no luck. Can anyone help? stephen.bird1@ntlworld.com

Hi, in a previous listing I saw reference to the difference offered with amal carbs of a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke needle. On tinkering today, dont know why as runs like a hamsters heart, albiet if hamsters suffer that vibration at low revs i dont think they could walk straight, i noticed that needle has 1 identifying groove above the clip setting grooves. In Rupert Ratios book this identifies it as a 2 stroke needle (4 stroke 2 identifying grooves). Someone mentioned that the 2 stroke needle is shorter, would this meam or explain C15 with 622-301 running rich not getting the metering of the longer needle at higher revs or am I looking at worn parts anyway. Only info I can …

Many of you may already know this and if so apologies for stating the obvious. having recently purchased 2 Amal Mk1 carbs, the premier type, i was dismayed by the strength of the slide spring, I am no weakling but you needed two hands to open the the throttle, lso when it snapped back it sounded like the throttle stop screw was going to bust off. living quite close to the AMAL people in Salisbury, i dropped in to have a moan and ask if they had any suggestions. They were very helpful and merely said. oh yeah loads of people complain, you are not alone, we fit the throttle slide spring out of the carbs that go on the triples, alot of trials and motocross boys do it. …
