after some investigation it seems that not all Jumbo's have a Reed Valve engine, rather than the 280 Disc Valve. However it seems that there is a No-Reed Valve version also. The Reed Valve Block was only fitted on bikes with engine serial number upto 178597, after that you got a blanking plate. Recent performance comparison's with my 280TL (currently in Gavin's tuning shop, ie my neighbours workshop) have got me lusting after a Reed Block, which are now not available from Rotax. It pulls well without, but is missing some of the 'rush' I'd expect and can be quite slow to get on the power (this is also probably due to the slooow action throttle). I need to do some furthe…

I don't need any convincing on the benefits of coppa slip, however, should it be used on Rotax motors? Will the motor act as a sacrificial anode ?

  11. Started by b40rt,

Can an old engine develop more power ? I put a new to me Rotax 240 engine into a SWM several months ago, it ran OK. I haven't changed the timing or carb, but have repacked the middle box and changed the back box. The increase in power wasn't instant, just a gradual improvement. The previous exhaust wasn't full of oil etc. One suggestion is the disc valve is sealing better ? Any thoughts or am I just imagining it ?

Hi all,new to this site and hope somebody can help. have a 1981/82 swm 240 whose spark keeps disappearing, have done the usual points condenser and stator coil behind flywheel, ignition coil and all associated wiring replaced with new items. the engine has had a few mods ported ,bored to 280cc barrel jacked and squish band altered to suit.flywheel skimmed as well so i am wondering if this is where the problem lies, if it is loosing its magnetism. has any one else had this problem? noted somebody has fitted an electronic ignition system to there swm(in this forum)does anybody have any more info on this?? also is the aprilia climber rotax engine electronic ignition…

  14. Hi guys, anyone know of a source for TL320 fuel tank to frame mounting rubbers...the doughnuts that sit at the front of the tank that the tank 'slides' into? I spoke with Martin at SWM.Moto and no luck....must be something around that can do the job...Honda TL125 ones won't! A quick google finds tank rubbers out there but I don't have old rubbers to go by - mine are missing - I can try and source some rubbers but I need a photo of one to go by and some dimensions would be real handy too. If anyone could help on that front I'd be grateful and pass on what I find. many thanks

  15. I have some problems getting my carb / engine adjusted proper, I have not so much experience with the SWM and with the standard setup of the bike. When I got the bike it runned poor (coming from the alpes), the bike runned good in the middle but poor between idle and and mid throttel. Any fiddling at the air screw did not really help. I then changed the main jet to 100 now got good low to mid throttle but the bike is going lean, I believe. Here a pic of the plug after 20 min to half hour of trail riding, (not trials riding), engine got quite hot I believe: I adjusted the air screw slightly richer as I di not had any jets with me and went on with trials riding, it w…

  17. I am the new proud owner of a 1983 SMW 350 Jumbo, in all it's yellow glory. Bought it from a local rider (thanks Wayne!). The engine has been fully rebuilt and has just a couple of hours of riding on it. I guess over the next few weeks (month?) as I get familiar with the bike and start riding it / tuning it to my liking I will have many questions. This Trials Central has been a great source of help in the past so I am turning to you guys again for answers. Engine oil What engine oil do people use? I my (modern) trials bike I use Maxima MTL 80WT. How to verify oil level and refill? There are no oil level windows (unlike my Fantic) and I couldn't find …

Hi guys, I thought you might like to see my latest SWM project. It started as a pretty nice 1981 TL230 but never one to just have a standard bike I decided to set out on a project to use the standard bike as the basis for something a little different. The frame was first and I decided (with the help of Rob Homer) to remove the top frame tube and the seat rails and make a tank as part of the frame with tubes welded inside to route the cables. The seat rails were replaced with straight tubes so that the new seat and side panels would sit flat and also form the top of the airbox (this dropped the seat height by about 3 inches). Whilst modifying the frame the head angle w…

  19. Started by 1st gear steve,

I have read through quite a few topics involving my queries, but I have a couple more queries. I have a Gori 200, 1982, I think is the same of the 1978 red / white model ? I have used the bike sparingly over the last 3 year, it's a great bike, but is let down by the clutch action / performance. When using the clutch adjuster via the hole in the clutch case, I cannot prevent either the clutch dragging, or slipping ( in higher gears), is this a common glitch or is it likely the plates are knackered. I was intending on extending the arm, is there a max amount I can get away with, should the extension, be straight? As the clutch is very heavy, what springs do you recomme…

  20. You guys have been a great source of help amazing me with your SWM knowledge and patience with a rookie like myself to the world of the Italian Speedies, but I have another favour to ask. I believe this TL320 pictured is a 1980....then met a guy yesterday into old twinshocks whom tells me from his memory that a 1980 SWM should be yellow with black frame (tick) but that the frame should have under engine frame tubes intact (ohh), SWM's loosing the lower under engine tubes in 1981...I should add the fella did say that 34 years on his memory could be wrong and that he owned a 1981 Gori, can any one help? I thought Gori's were always a year behind the SWM's so this one pict…
