Aprilia

  1. I must be a sucker for an old dog. Recently got my 290 Sherco bucket of bolts going and I've come across a 1992 280 Aprillia climber that needs a bit of TLC. It starts and runs but only on the choke. I've cleaned out the carb, swilled out the tank and put fresh premix in. The carb and airbox rubbers are sealed tight and it's got a new plug BP5es. I should say the bike has stood for a long while. Any ideas from the good people of TC?

  3. So, I've got this '94 model i'm fixing up and riding a bit... long list so far, but just on the brakes / forks: I've replaced the fork seals and oil, cleaned and buffed the front rotor with 3M scotchbrite pad on an air-tool, replaced the brake pads with pads from the Tryals Shop here in the USA, and replaced all the front brake fluid and vacuum bled the system. Its much better than it was, but it will barely pull the back tire off the ground even when i bounce the rear end and compress the forks. I used to ride stoppies on sportbikes and supermoto, and even did a few on my '05 BMW 1200 GS but almost nothing on this aprilia. Has anyone ever made or mounted a larger…

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and god am I glad to have found it! Last week I bought an Aprilia TXR311 air cooled. Nice tidy bike, bought it for a good price as a "reluctant starter" Saw it running and rode it on the day, apart from the clutch slipping a little and being a bit rich all was well. Got it home and set about kicking it over with no joy, went through all the obvious checks, it has a very good spark, so much compresion I can put all my weight on the kickstart, fresh fuel, and after taking out the dirty partially collapsed filter it's getting air. In my book it should run, even if it's rough and needing tuning. 4 hours of kicking, towing behind a car, changi…

I was wondering if there was a dealer who specialised in Aprilia parts in the UK. I don't need many spares at the moment but a dealer who could help is always a bonus. Thanks in advance because I know you all have a wealth of knowledge. Richard

HI All, Does anyone know how to remove the flywheel on the Hiro engine. It seems to be in two parts. Does it need a special puller? I am trying to get to see the ignition system to see if it is set correctly, which leads to me next question. How do you set it?? Thks Bruce

I recently picked up a TX311 frame, exhaust, rear suspension etc. I just bought a TXR312 last night in need of a lot of work. What are the differences between the two models (besides rear brake and shock)? The frames look similar except for extra tabs on the 312 for shock, extra mount on mid muffler. On my 312 the shock is leaking oil, bearings are bad. Has wrong muffler. The 311 swingarm, shock, suspension bearings, frame, exhaust are all good. Thanks

Do any of you Aprilia guys have (or know of) a TX300 twinshock for sale? Can't remember seeing one in the 80's, were any imported into UK?

After finally getting my '93/'94 Climber 280 rebuilt on Monday. The clutch is slipping like crazy. Post build I noticed gear oil weeping from the kick start/gear shaft seal so Martin at SWM Moto sorted my out. after rebuild number 3 the clutch slips terribly. Prior to this it had 10W40 in it. It now has ATF. I gave also replaced the clutch top basket as one of the fingers was missing. Nothing else has changed. any help or comments please, I'm baffled!

100% newbie, but old. Just bought a old April Climber, site-unseen; had delivered. Bike seems mostly okay, but the rotors are rusty & pitted. The rear brake does not work well at all. The hydraulics & pads are good and seem to be contacting ok. Should I consider getting the rotors turned or is rusty okay, as the seller insists? Thanks.

The Marzocchi "Duo-Shock" on my bike works as a great spring retainer...but little else. I was told this shock was the same as the Marzocchi on the Fantic 305, but it isn't. Different lengths (Fantic is longer) and different bottom mount (clevis type on the Aprilia.) I can't find a Marzocchi part number for the shock so I can't search for a rebuild kit. Checked with Mike at the Tryals Shop and he has no rebuild kits or shocks in stock. Anybody know where you can buy a rebuild kit for it? I have at least a couple of shops locally who can install it and charge the shock. Alternatively...anybody know of a replacement shock manufacturer? I've seen some "Wilber…

Hi I have just bought a 1993/4 ish climber as a non runner. Some one has been in at the disc valve which was out, but I have set it as per the www.rotax.co.uk uk parts list instructions (I think). The previous owner has apparently changed the piston and rings due to low compression. The bike now has very strong compression maybe a little more than I would expect. I have checked over the carb and this looks to be set up just about right. 105 main jet and needle clip second from the bottom. I have tried the old squirt wd40 in the carb mouth to get over any carb problems. (I know this sounds a bit daft but its worked for me as an indicator for many years) This…

I went riding on the aprilia and noticed the front tyre was flat. So i got the bike home and decided to put in a new innertube. Then i thought, while its hear i will get the exhaust off and pull that dint out........ So i ignored the front wheel for the moment and undid the first exhaust bolt, then my cheap allen key snapped off in the second exhaust stud so i couldnt get it out. A Bit miffed i decided to take the tank off and see if i could get better access to the offending allen screw. When i got the tank off i noticed 2 things. 1 - the tank was beginning to melt onto the exhaut (thats what the smell was!) and 2) there were some cracks in the frame, about 7 or 8 cracks…

Hello all, Although I've been messing around on a TY80 then an '81 Cota 349 since I was a nipper I've only just decided to get into competitions. I sent my membership to the Knock M.C.C over here in N. Ireland, bought some cheap kit off eBay ( new, but cheap..) and finally got meself a '93 Aprilia Climber 280R. I've trawled though this forum and NO-ONE seems to mention this bike. It is in great condition and in the two weeks I've had it it seems to pull like a train ( I weigh an even 18st - rugby player, not a completely fat B*****d. .). However, it seem that they weren't that popular as there sod all on the web about them. So, does anyone have any opinions / tech …
