Bultaco

Hi Guys, Having now fully cleaned up my 198B barrel and cylinder head, the top of the barrel and the underside of the head are stamped 137. It has been over-bored to 73.75 giving 256cc. Do the Bultaco Sherpa gurus suggest my head and barrel came off an older 250 Alpina 137 from 1974/1976? The bike was apparently supplied directly by Comerfords in early 1982 as one of about 110 bikes supplied and sold by them, and was allegedly billed as a 'Vesty Replica' Or perhaps just put together by Bultaco factory using what was just lying around? And presumably over-bored to the max early in its life? Ideas appreciated. Thanks

The piston diameter on my 198B is 73.75 giving a size of 256cc. The underside of the piston is stamped DINAMIN, and although the piston and bore are in good condition I wonder if anybody knows if this was a fairly standard mod just to maximise the capacity rather than being overbored so many times over the years for some strange reason. Also does anybody know what bike would this piston? might have come from? GasGas perhaps?? The InMotion site shows piston sizes up to 73.00 only. Thanks.

Are there any recommendations for the torque of the front sprocket nut? Its a M24 but only 6.5mm thick. Mine was a little bit loose a bit but the security plate hold it in place. Now I would like to here some practical recommendations. Spec's in Nm if possible. Thank's in advance. Patrik

In the process of sorting the Bultaco out and rectifying all the usual B & S (Bodgit and Scarper) "mods" that you find on every second hand bike, well i seem to, The bike runs, in a fashion, but is very very "wooly" and feels either over rich or choked up. Have a spare exhaust in the spare bits box so will be fitting that and as seems the fashion nowadays i have thrown the home made airfilter element, made from the usual 3M scouring pad grrrrrr i HATE it when mongs do that when the proper material is so cheap, away. Striping the carb tomorrow to find out what horrors await and was wondering what the std jet sizes were so at least i had an idea what should be in it …

Hi Guys, sobody knows which kind of sherpa petrol tanks is this? I found two: first in a 199 and other was in a 199a. It looks bigger than other that i see in the internet picture of Sherpa fiberglass tank; what worries me most is the hump near the tank cap!! is it possible that this is a Alpina fiberglass tank? thank in advance for the answers :-)

Hello all, just rode Pa's 350 Bulty 199 (1979) in a trial at the weekend, and i'm still suffering with left arm tiredness (boo hoo) The clutch is really heavy (and virtually useless). Any pointers or tips? The Italjet is having a bit of a rest, so I'll use the Bulty for a couple of trials. Cheers

What petrol/oil ratio do folks use nowadays with synthetic and semi-sythetic oils?I seem to recall using 32:1 with semi -synthetic back in the early eighties.Also ,what is the recommended sparkplug for a 199?Can anyone help?Cheers,Alt.

Need some help figuring out what I have. I know its a 1978 Bultaco 199 but I have some confusion because of the frame. I purchased the bike a few months ago from the original owner in Colorado. It had the original Colorado title issued in July, 1978 with the proper VIN # that matches the frame and the engine. My problem is that the frame looks like a 199A. It has the aluminum skid plate, split rear swing arm, etc... I have a friend that owns a 1979 Bultaco 199A and the frames are identical. One person told me it was a Sammy Miller frame but don't those have an SM Serial #? Mine has the standard Bultaco JB-199032XX with a matching serial # on the engine. Were th…

I need help from you Bulto experts(please)!What is the best way to achieve a one finger clutch operation on a 199?Years ago I used a front brake actuating arm on the clutch to give more leverage(but I'm struggling to get hold of one at the moment!!!)and also backed off the clutch nuts at the expense of clutch slip when pulling a high gear.I can probably rig up a lever system in order to give some mechanical advantage,as I have on my B40 but on the Bult it will be difficult to package it neatly.Any suggestions?Also,is it worth replacing the Bing carb with perhaps a Mikuni?Your replies are appreciated!

Hi Chaps! my mates just got hold of a 325 post sherpa, its fitted with the gearchange on the leftside(when sitting on bike) when you kickstart the bike it goes into gear! ,someone said this is normal as this is because the aftermarket gearlevers are not the same shape as the original one? is this correct?

Does anybody know if the blue colour on the 199A and 199B are the same, or is the 199B a different shade of blue? Especially the blue on the fork sliders and the yolks on the 199B Thanks

Seem to recall reading somewhere that Bultaco Frontera footrests can be fitted to the 199a, what is the difference between these and the std footrests and do they fit straight on without alteration.

Good afternoon fellow trialists. New to site and first message posting on this forum I have just acquired a 1979 Bultaco Sherpa 199A and want to convert it to electronic ignition. However, it has Motolpat rotor and stator fitted with points etc. It looks like the system fitted to Montesa 248/349 from the same year. Is this correct? as I thought it should have Femsa rotor flywheel and stator. Perhaps somebody has change it for some reason?. The electronic conversion kits that are on the market are only for Sherpa 199A with Femsa ignitions and use the existing Femsa rotor flywheel, so I seem to have a problem. Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Since we are on the subject of 199s I have a question about the rear brake. I just converted my 199a from a left brake / right shift back to a left shift / right brake set up. I used an original bultaco cable that runs through the frame from the right brake lever to the left break drum. While the brake does not work nearly as good (as I expected) as it did with the rod action of left brake peddle set up it does not work nearly as good as I thought the cable might work. I find the right brake lever comes up to high for easy access with the foot and the braking action of the rear wheel is less than I thought it would be. I recently aquired a 199A which I plan to ride vintage with. I have two questions. It has the original (skinny) Betor shocks which need to be rebuilt. Are there rebuild kits available for these shocks and if so where can I get them. If I were to put a new set of shocks on this bike what are some of the recommendations? Thanks
