Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

Am thinking of getting a 125cc trails bike gas gas or a beta. The plan is for it to be road legal as I can ride on road to a spots to use it. Questions I have: A. What speed would a typical 125 be able to reach and sustain? B. How much damage would be caused to a engine, by using it on road? C. Would there be any gearing changes I could make, to make the bike a bit more road friendly. If I got a beta I would be after getting the long range tank and seat setup. i went to register a bike today all the correct documentation etc to hand having done it loads of times.. however.. you cant read about it anywhere on any websites or even on a poster but the process for registering a vehicle has changed significantly.. virtually all local dvla offices are closing in december and all applications will ahve to be done by mail.. in the meantime significant changes have alrady come into effect on 15/04/13. you need to do this for all vehicles built in the uk or not. you must have a dating certificate from the original manufacturer.. if not you must have a letter from the manufacturer stating that they do not have records or did not build…

Hi I have a tiger cub 1959 trials its registered in my name v5 ,I've been told I don't need a mot and its tax exempt its fully working and in good condition ,no lights, reflectors etc but I have fitted a horn how do I go about using it on a daytime licence I have also put a number plate on the rear mudguard

hi all, i am hoping to get my 4rt on the road. its a 2012 model so im guessing no need for a mot however what do i actually need on it to be legal? lights speedo etc etc. also is it legal to ride on the road stood up? thanks

Rightio, Typically I've left this all to the last minute I've finally passed my test today and am doing the Jack Wood trial on the 31st (road work involved). I've done a bit of research and people seem to be getting charged roughly £100-£200 for insurance and the general opinion is that msm seem to be best seeing as they have a propper trials bike policy. Now I got a quote from them for £210ish third party and £270ish third party fire and theft. I know that's more than others I have seen but I am only 19. So that sounds kind of reasonable at my age? After just having my 2006 Sherco 290 nicked, thinking about getting a replacment bike. I say thinking because I just can't bare the thought of loosing another £1000-1500. (And I know they'll be back.) So I reckon insurance is the only way forward. Anyone got any advice? I know Carole Nash do a theft only policy for off-road bikes and had a quote for a shade over £100, which seems ok. I may end up wanting to do one of the big trials for which I hear its best to have a road-reg bike. I assume this means it needs to be taxed too and I assume proper road bike insurance will be needed to get it taxed; so wondering if a normal motorbike policy would be better. Only prob I see…

If your close to warrington cheshire Princess St Garage easily found on google or yell. Just the one guy does the bike mot's and understands what we use them for. No drama MOT very stress free. Of course bike was mechanically perfect but no dramas with no lights etc. Just a battery powered mega horn and a large number plate. Dont forget the little reflector needed on the number plate, a i would recommend wizzing off the "not for road use" if its on your tyres. Simple

i am trying to register my bike with the insurance company but they dont have a montesa 4rt on records, they have a montesa 315r ?? ive tryed using the RTL 250 but they dont recognise this !! does any body have a 4rt registered and what is it classed as on the V5 log book please.....

Hi Booked my Sherpa in for MOT with a local comp shop (the owners son rides trIals). He said that if it was fitted with a IRC (TR 011R) rear tyre then they are not marked for road use and the bike will fail the MOT. Examined the tyre and, no 6 digit number or E marking. So does that mean that nearly all the competitors in Classic trials riders that use the Highways are not legal:- NO MOT THUS NO INSURANCE Comments please!!! Regards Martin

Hi Having ridden trials a few years ago, then moving into mx/Enduro, I am now looking at another trials bike for practicing and entering some events. I want it to be road reg'd and able to ride down the lane to a practice area near me as well as for events that require it. I have found a nice looking example of a 250 sherco, but the owner says it doesn't come with a V5. Initially alarm bells rang- but having looked through the forum posts, it looks like I can still register the bike etc. question is, is this worth the extra hassle without a V5- would you buy a bike without this document? Hey guys About to register my bikes for the first time. Sorted the majority of the paperwork out but now I need to get it daylight MOT. As its the first time I do not need to fit a plate as its registered on frame number. But what about the rest of the bike. Do I only really need the following: Trials Tyres with "E" marked on them rotating the correct way. A rear reflector And a horn that is continuous. Have I missed anything? Also what horn have people got and how have they mounted the reflector? Thanks in advance

I'm trying to insure my 2 bikes, and it's proving an epic. Despite getting quotes from recommended insurers (Carole Nash, Bennets, Performance Direct), it appears that when you get into the T&Cs or definitions of the policies, they either do not cover 'Trials', any road use, or competitions. So, how do people cover their bikes for off road use, with some on road transiting between sections, and for use in trials competitions? Or are people being 'artistic' with the truth?

After reading about another spate of Trials bike thefts, how many people actually insure their bikes? Not talking about roadgoing insurance, but insurance against theft from home/van/trial I forgot to re-insure my 4RT for a week, earlier in April this year (Carole Nash forgot to send the reminder) and in hindsight I could have kicked myself I use Carole Nash for a specific offroad bike policy to cover against theft/fire from home, which includes theft cover whilst travelling to and from a Trial or practise ground whilst in the Van or on a trailer Costs me £128 per year for £3k's worth of cover - cheap 'piece of mind' in my book, less than a pair of Raptor footpegs S…

Does any one know where i can insure my classic trials bikes against theft? i dont have a road liscence so cant get insurance under that all i want is to be able to put my classic off road bikes under my home insurance but alas i cant find a company which will allow me to do it. any help much appreciated james

struggling to get the new bike insured, can anyone with the new Ossa tell me who they are insured with or anyone recommend me a company. I have tried all the usual suspect but no one lists the TR280i will probably need a specialist broker.
