I am thinking about getting a Montesa, (coming from an OSSA) but I am wondering about accessing the computer on the bike. Is this something that the 'end user' is not supposed to do? Can we/end-user plug into it and monitor engine temp or change what temp the fan comes on or see how many hours are on the bike or swap maps out etc? What are the limits? Do we have to pay for software for this? Can any local Honda dealer switch maps or tell how many hours are on the bike?

Hi Guys, I am after some advice regarding my 1979 Mk1 349. I am about 98% finished with my restoration but I have a slight issue with it. I have a new Mikuni carb fitted instead of the Amal. It starts and ticks over great. If I rev it a little bit it comes back to idle nicely. If I open the throttle fully and release it, the revs hold for 4 or 5 seconds before returning to idle. Throttle cable is not sticking and I can hear the slide in the carb returning onto the throttle stop screw. I have tried the clip on the needle in different positions but it is still the same. Is this a fuelling issue or is it sounding like crank seals? The crank seals were supposed to hav…

Did a search but came up with now't. What's the situation with the fuel tank/seat unit interchangablity between the older Cota's of all flavors, say 1974 onwards? I notice that 247 have single downtube frame whilst the 348 have a twin downtube so the frames can't be the same, so my thinking is that 247's don't cross over to 348? Also, did all UK spec' Cota's have false 'tank tops' with a metal tank under the cover, was there a cut off year? My own 247C is 1978 yet has a glassfibre tank. I know a metal fuel tank was mandatory for road use until the late 80's (a SSDT question there) I believe but then again, not all UK spec' trials bikes had metal tanks,…

My new bike is extremely hard to start and very unpredictable. I never give it any throttle and It takes forever to get it started, usually after about 10 kicks I hold the throttle open and kick it a couple times to reset it and after doing that a couple times it will start. Then this morning I go out and first kick it starts. Then after it's been running whenever I turn it off and then try to restart it I have to go through the same procedure, kick it a bunch then hold throttle open. it usualy takes anywhere from 10 to 20 kicks. I read somewhere that pushing it instead of hard kicking it seems to help so I've tried that as well. Any tips or suggestions are welcome and…

Any ideas?? Thanks Paul

In the manual it says to put silicone grease between the main bearings and the crank seals, is this needed? Can it be a different kind of grease? Thanks for the help.

My 348 runs well now particularly since retarding the ignition to somewhere around 4mm BTDC I had been setting it to 14 based on an old manual which it must be said didnt specifically cover the 1978 348. I have been told that running too far advanced is the cause for the burned fibreglass on the tank seat unit. Also that I have proabbly burned out the inside of the exhaust centre section. So my next task is to cut open the centre box to have a look. have any of you done this job?

Hi all Hope some one can shed some light on this one. Whilst out practising yesterday I some how managed to go over the handlebars and the bike ended up upside down half way up a hill. The bike cut out but by the time I got back up to it and got it back on its wheels lots of oil had run out from what seemed to be under the fuel tank. Within a minute or so there seems to be lots of oil all down the frame, the fork legs and even the radiator was saturated. The bike started fine so I rode back gentle and checked the levels and topped the engine oil and continued to ride. I did find what looked like a breather from the rocker cover with a small valve on the end of a pipe, …

OK, I think I understand this tortured way of screwing an engine together. It appears that the head is secured to the barrel by studs coming off the barrel, barrel is then secured to the crankcase via studs coming off the crankcase to tubular nuts with allen fittings..correct? ...and these barrel 'nuts' frequently sieze? ...is there anyway to apply say Plus Gas or WD-40 to these problematic nuts on a regular basis to avoid any future issues or are the nuts blind being covered by the head? ....hope that all makes sense ....for the love of Mary, just what have I impluse bought?....metal on metal clutch plates, clutch springs held on with pins, brass clut…

Hi. I've recently bought a 315r. It's been suffering with bad clutch drag which I've now sorted with a new clutch pack, master and slave orings, elf oil and all bled up and working perfectly. When removing the clutch slave to inspect the piston and orings I found a pool of fluid inside, initially I thought the piston orings were passing fluid, so they were changed for genuine parts. Since fixing the clutch I've had another look inside the slave cylinder to find another pool of fluid, im presuming this is gearbox oil passing through the hole which the push rod is inserted. So my question is, is it normal for for a small amount of oil to pass through the pu…
