  1. 5 or 6 mm carbon steel should be fine. Get plate profiles laser cut if you can. Its all about the welding. TIG will give you the nicest end result. The welder can take his time & ensure a perfect job. Stick & MIG all happen a bit too fast IMHO. nb. don't forget to load up the suspension to simulate the rider on board before you set the pegs.
  2. Ex Army / NATO waterproof socks available on that well known T'interweb site. They are fine, but don't expect everything to be completely bone dry at the end of a wet trial, especially with the calf height of current trials boots. You certainly don't get that horrible cold feeling the minute you dip your toes in the water as the water makes its way in when wearing normal socks. You can still feel your feet when taking your boots off at the finish. Liberal use of waterproof dubbin, oil etc, with a heat gun helps boots stay a bit water proof around the stitching. Bit of a pain, especially if you are out every week. And.........most of us manage to get a hole them eventually. Never had this problem with NCB wellies, ? Remember PVC Sox too, & TT leathers plastic coated two piece outfits.
  3. Hipster hikers alloy water bottle or the old 1 ltr plastic milk container with the cap taped up. This can be flattened, slung or recycled !!!
  4. Never heard of it over here in UK. Could be a defective one off. TRRS build quality & suspension up with the best. I'm 13 clem & run the standard Reiger with a softish set up. Brilliant ride. Rider size sometimes requires a stiffer spring,
  5. 300 Factory for the "experienced" rider. It'll take you for a proper work out, especially by the third lap. SS or Super smooth is a bit tamer. However, you could do what a lot people do : Slow throttle, flywheel weight, low comp head insert, & a 9t front sprocket . (SS spec). Folks often buy a bike that's a wee bit too much for them & spend a pile of cash calming things down & making it ride like a 250. IMHO, go for a later 250. Much better option for the average rider. ?

    4rt Swingarm

Not sure, but nothing much has changed since 2005, apart from the annual "decal" changes & techno speak. Also worth noting that the 315 motor slots perfectly into a 4RT frame at the rear swingarm/spindle location. I've never tried it, but wouldn't be at all surprised to see the 315 swinger fitted to a 4RT frame.

    TRS NIGHTMARE

We run an 18 RR. Brilliant bike. Other riders I know all have positive comments, No bother, other than normal event related maintenance requirements. (Wheel bearings, headstock bearings & suspension linkages to grease). Keihin PWK needs keeping an eye on. Importer recommended we check the multi pin connector on the loom. Which we did & all was OK. Sounds like you have a one off problem child. Mr UK TRS & his dealer should be giving you plenty of support. As we have seen in recent years, its very hard work for a manufacturer to shake off a bad reputation.

    Gearbox oil

Water pump overhaul kit required. Lip seal gone & shaft will be worn at seal contact point. A new seal won't last very longwith a worn shaft.. Need to replace shaft too. Easy enough to do yourself. Budget around £70+ for parts.
  9. " Bold New Graphics" says it all !!!!. Build quality peerless, but they still weigh in about the same as they did 15 years ago, unless your name is Toni.
  10. drill a small hole in the tap & use a small zip tie or key ring to give easy purchase. Quite easy mod. (BTW Be careful if you decide to unscrew original tap from tank (M6 screws). Captive nuts moulded into tank can let go.& you'll have a bit of a carry on to sort it all out. You'll also need some fancy epoxy to re set them)
  11. Have come across this many times. Folks just don't, or can't look after their stuff. Strip / grease the complete rear suspension the minute you get the bike. Headstock bearings go downhill fast too, so grease them. Wheel bearings will last longer if you pick off the outer seal with a Stanley knife blade, & add some high quality marine grease. (there will be next to nowt in there anyway) & push seals back on. Cheap to do .Prevention is better than cure.
  12. If pump shaft is grooved, i.e worn, then it will need changing as well as new seals. Any Gas Gas owner with water pump problems will testify.
  13. b40rt is correct, You need to expand the surrounding metal, not the studs, so that's where the heat is required. Go easy with the heat, as heating alloy anywhere near "cherry red " will result in rapid meltdown. Might be worth trying a small Stillson type pipe wrench near the bottom of the stud where it goes into the alloy. This will minimise the risk of the stud twisting/ snapping further up.

    Riding a 4RT

Build quality, reliability & suspension peerless. Sounds great & lovely to ride, although weight is an issue, as basic design has been around since 2005.Great on rocky going, but not so great at gripping in muddy conditions. Spare parts are very reasonable, especially breakables like plastics. Airbox is a bit of a muck attractor & sidestand could be better. 4RT will be perfectly OK if you are are just enjoying the occasional trial & having some fun. Buy one & keep it. But... If you are competing every week & plan to progress, then 2 stroke wins the day for mr average. n.b Toni's bike may look like a 4RT, but it has been hand crafted out of "Unobtainium" , & will no doubt weigh just slightly more than the rule book minimum..
  15. The Lycra boys don't even need a front wheel these days, never mind a sump guard.
  16. Nothing wrong with the original. I've had several Beta & ride in N Yorks, where rocks are prevalent. Never had any bother. Save your money. Beta is the no1 top seller for good reason. Everything is tried & tested.
  17. 250 wins it every time. fit a slow action throttle, & 9 tooth gearbox sprocket. 300's are for more experienced riders & can often get the better of you. Lots of people go for the bigger cc models , then end up spending a tidy sum de tuning them to make them more rideable, when a 250 does the job just as well.
  18. I've got a mate in the classic scramble scene who runs a Cheney with chrome/nickel frame. He sustained some localised damage to his frame coating & was able to carry out a neat repair using one of the small home kits available on the web. Results looked quite good. However, If you are planning on doing a full frame, etc, go to the pro's.
  19. Depends who it is & who's marking him. Cleans often given for artistic licence. Final scores regularly raise a few eyebrows. Also hugely influenced by well known spectators shouting " good ride lad / lass" when said rider has clearly failed. "Stop allowed" makes for harder sections, harder to observe, longer queues, & smaller entries, which is fine for a minority. Surely there should be just one set of rules, which would make things much easier for all. ( Indoor arena rules are in an other worldy place & for a mere handful of riders. ) All said & done, where would we be without observers on a cold wet Sunday morning, week in, week out. Massive respect to the Farmer John's of our sport. These knowledgeable, impartial, & reliable folks deserve a medal.
  20. Ordinary spokes start to look like Pig wire in no time. Stainless always looks smart. Bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run.
  21. Is fan / thermostat working ??. Fan rectifier unit a common failure, Bad earth causes it to fail / melt , & prevents fan working, with subsequent boiling over. You might have an oil / water emulsion in the crankcase, & oil seals may have suffered. Well documented in forums section. Been there before unfortunately. Not that unusual for a GG of this age. Milky Oil : Drain down, take off the outer case & clean with fuel as best you can. Re instate & carry out a flushing run for a few minutes with ATF or thin Trans oil, then drain. replenish.. Generally comes good fairly quickly. You might get lucky with new head O rings, but another very common cause of water in the trans is water pump lipseal failure (Seal wears out & also makes a groove in the impeller shaft. You need to change both)
  22. 2020 Vertigo colour scheme designers ought to be tested. What are they on !!!! ?
  23. Sling the Bing !!!. Old carbs are old school & invariably worn out. Mine came with a Dellorto which is OK , but could be better. I am told Mikuni works best, especially during hot conditions. Keihin also has good reports, but will liven things up a fair bit..
  24. I have had three pairs of Stone 2's with no complaints.. Now have A stars, which are following the current trend & morphing into fancy ankle boots. Got a friend who is extremely tall & he swears by Forma Boulder Trials Boot. Heard good repo's from Sidi too. Ex Nato Sealskins off T'interweb best option to keep feet dry (ish).
  25. Walk away, OSSA has gone the way of all the other leftfield trials irons.
