There has always been a big gap between 1-2-3 and 4-5 on the bikes. In '02 year, there was a change, and many thought the first gear was too high, so went to a 9-42 or a 10-44, from the standard 10-42. This tightens up the overall ratio as well, making the gap between 3-4 less, and 5th more usable on trails. All point being, your old bike may have had this change.
Add, with standard gearing of 10-42 on the new bike, if 4th is a bit too high, you can probably just go back to 3rd and cruses up at a slower speed without revving the crap out of it.

Your little screw thingie should effect both compression and rebound damping, you can bounce the rear statically to judge a bit of difference. I cannot recall for sure where the screw is located on the new ones, as I think it has changed from my older bike. Ryan should be able to tell you quick enough. Two or three clicks usually make a difference, fine tune from there.
I think you are correct in that they will come set quicker than the Scorpa you may be accustomed to, yet many seem to prefer that, all choice here and you can change later, but main thing is to just simply adapt to the bike and may take a bit of time and practice, but the better you are the more quickly you adapt mentally.
Billy has a bit of this same problem on his new 4T Beta.

Yea, he has warts on his hand, so he practices safe sex!

Are they even made for tubeless?
The mud folk seem to like the IRC, the rock folk seem to like the Mich, I kinda like the Dunlops,as they do seem to like the low pressures.
-
No, just a defective rider, but I do need someone to take some still pics, just so I can lie and tell folks I am actually balancing on the thing!
-
Obviously , you now know Billy T!
Find your little screw thingie, should settle things a bit if you like.

All I can say is when I got my little Yam XT 225, I thought it might actually do a few novice sections. All I can say in recallection is that the top heavy lump is no DT-175 from days of old!!!!! And I ain't draggin the thing around a trials course!
I like the little bike though, it is not good at anything, but will do a bit of everything, and is fun on trails and tight swistie roads!

A thing of Beauty!, who cares what it costs!
-
I think many have used the Pro-Taper bars and adapters. Costs a lot less and works, but Chris's setup is first class!

The main bearings normally start out at clearances(up/down) of .003 in, and I would suspect a wear limit of double that. So point being, as long as they are not excessively noisey and rotate smoothly, I would put an indicator on the flywheel just to get a guage on them. Out that far on the wheel, you might get 010. or so.

I think you are correct, yet it seems there is not much in the way of an entry level bike out there. The closest thing that comes to mind would be a Scorpa Long Ride, which is a sweet bike. Hopefully there will be some new ones before long.
Being an old git from your era myself, I am spoiled on a modern bike now. Even an old bike with a seat is not of any comfort as the positioning is still odd. One can just as easily find a perch spot on the rear mudguard of a new bike, yet that has little to do with the awkward perception of a new rider.
If you can ride a TL 250, even a well done TY would feel like a feather! And as I say all that, I will tell you also that I have indeed considered going to a vintage bike over and over, yet cannot bring myself to do it, as by comparison they are just too much baggage!

Try driving a torx bit of proper size into the rounded allen head. Usually does the trick unless you screw it up totally, then the drill points!

Hehe! Sounds as though you have her right where you want her there, Ian! Did you get the diaper changing lessons as well?
Man, I am going to miss this event!

OMG!
He actually owns a DSLR? now?
Did you ever find a girlfriend, too??????

I shall only add a bit of experience here, as you mileage may vary, but USUALLY, and that is a big word here, there will be some aluminum transfer to the cyl wall and some stuck rings here.
This will usually clean up nicely with a bit of muratic acid to eat the ali off the plated walls with a bit of agitation with scotchbrite. As the hard plated walls are very tough, there may be little to no damage, requireing no cyl repair at all or a light hone job(skillfully done) at best. The piston being the sacrificial unit.
It all needs to be closly evaluated, but even at worst, most local top MX shops are familiar with this type stuff, so I doubt you would need go far, add, as a trials bike mainly putting about, it does not really have to be perfect, as some wear and tear(before the incident) will be normally fine as long as you got a new and good piston and ring in her. All point being, cyl replate/replacement is the last resort and not usually neccessary.
Hope you find it repairable!

Word was Grimbo got 10th place, I gotta ck the scores!

That would be about 650 miles from here. You may actually be closer!
-
There you go then! Carefull with this stuff, knowing exactly what to look for !

No, he is referring to frame scuffs and scratches!

It is now official that RYP and Ryan Young have now made a donation toward the charity auction from this side of the pond as well. There will be no less than one dozen of Ryan's very popular original Trials Training Techniques DVD's offered to all. Very nice to have, specially for new riders.
For the sake of economy, I am considering retaining two of these for folk on this side of the pond that would like to participate and contribute to the TC benifit.
The retail price on these is $49.95 US plus post! I will take all bids from those in the US that would like to help, starting at $30 + $3 post! Only two going at this rate and the top bidders get them, so bid high! Still a bargain!
I will give all a 24 hr period to PM me with their bids, as otherwise they are all off the Scotland, so act swiftly please. I can accept the Paypal and will cover the cost, as all the money less post will go to the charities. Hope to hear from those needing soon!
