Twinshock

  1. Started by scot taco,

Another question to those who have ridden both. Were the SWM bikes of 1981-82 better than the last Sherpa T? Maybe just a matter of opinion, but if they were was it by a big margin? Did they handle better or have a better power delivery? I have only ever ridden one around the yard of a friends for about 5 minutes so I couldn,t really tell if it was loads better then my Sherpa T.

A freind of mine brought his two SWM's to my house the other night to see what I could do with them. one is a 81 240 (black framed) in box's and peices. The other one is a 82 240 ( blue frame no rear loop) that rolls on it's wheels but alot of bits to it in a box too. So after a note to MartinM to see what the correct plug should be ,I cleaned the tank and carb , dropped in a new plug and some good fuel and the 82 ran on its own ! I just had to try it out ... And I have to ask those that may know , is the 240 fantic a whole lot more powerful than these or do I just have alot more work ahead of me ! Now that the 82 does run at least , it gets remanufactured ,The bike is s…

hi i have an swm 240 and have had some ignition trouble. it would run fine for about half an hour then would stop sparking, i have replaced the complete ignition system (stator winding, condenser, points, ht coil and plug). this has solved the problem and it ran fine for two trials but during the most recent trial it started misfiring on a long climb. since then it will start and idle ok, but when i ride it splutters and backfires a lot. could this be the condenser breaking down? i have also cleaned the carb and tried a different clean carb but no change in the symptoms. so im pretty confident its not fuel related. please help as im very frustrated with it. thanks

Anyone know where to get tapered roller steering bearings for Montesa Cota 348? They should be 25 x 45 x 11 (or 12). (The standard size is 25 x 47.)

I have just received my new tapered bearings and now I look at the old setup I am not entirely sure where to begin. Does anyone have any diagramatic instructions on a similar type of bike. I know I need to chill the small bits and warm the big bits. I have the old bearings out but I am not sure of best way to remove the lower races from the stem. I ordered the parts from Pyramid and great fast service but I also wonder if any spacers may be required etc or will the replacement just fit straight on. All advice welcome.

Hi, does anyone out there have a real nice looking pair they'd sell me for my 349 Cota museum bike? They don't even have to work, just look good.

Hi all , I've just obtained a set of 12.5 inch eye to eye long telesco shocks from a forward mount sherpa ... I got them to go on my boys TY80 big wheel project as the dimensions are perfect ... But they are not in hand yet , and the seller said the seals leak abit ... So before I get a set of falcons built for this experiment , does anybody know if seals are available for these old shocks ? Or do I disassemble them , measure the seals and pray I can duplicate them ...! Thanks , Glenn

There's a nice looking one in my area...thinking about scoring it. It has a TY250 front end. Is that a common mod? Sensible? Better brake? How would it compare to my 247? I had one in about 1978....but it was a long time ago and it was the only trials bike I had ever ridden! It

After seeing the video,s of Cabrianes and Robregordo i knew i had to have a twinshock. The first picture is how i got it, not very good looking but the engine sounds great and the clutch and gears work. Started with painting the tank orange (sorry purrists) the mudguards will be painted in orange or i will go for the grey color like on 348mate,s great looking 349. Will try to post the progress here maybe it will help others in the future Looking for advice on rear shocks i,ve seen some real nice Betor ones are they any good ?

I've read many times that Fantic 240 Pro is the best twinshock bike ever. Do you agree or...? Best features, weaknesses?

Some time ago a topic (in this forum I think) ended up discussing the last of the real Spanish bikes (before Gas Gas & Sherco) and somebody posted some pics of the last, watercooled, monoshock, Cappra. Can anybody find it 'cause I've tried or alternatively would the person who posted said pics please repost. Thanks TFT

Has anyone here ordered from them, or is there a dealer for them? I've emailed them and got no answer. How you rate their shocks compared to Falcon and Rock shocks? The application is a TY250.

  19. I just took a very old front trials tyre off a recently acquired M49 Sherpa and thought it felt a bit heavy. It is a Firestone made in Spain with vee pattern blocks and is worn down to about 3mm block height. The worn out old Firestone weighs 4765 grams while the slightly worn 2003 tube-type Michelin that went onto the bike weighs 3506 grams. For non-metric people that is a weight difference of more than 2.5 pounds. I hate to think what an unworn Firestone would weigh. The sidewall of the Firestone has a little brag label saying "gum dipped" which I guess was a pretty cool thing at the time. I can't bear to throw it away as it is a terrific reminder of how much tyres …
