Twinshock

  1. Hi there, thanks to several of you who helped with the idle issue - seemed a simple fix. Now i realise there is another issue; i had a good session for a couple of hours today in the woods with no problems (only second time riding this bike). On the way back home on the road - so riding with a few more beans the engine faltered and died when under load. it did this last time and i assumed i had run out of fuel, but i know i didn't today. i was concerned the engine was seizing, but it turned over ok, but did struggle to start after this. Any suggestions? no problem on the slow stuff just riding home. Manual suggests HT lead.....?!

  2. Just picked up a second hand electronic ignition kit for my Cota 200, its one of the Motoplat kits like the ones on the france Classic Trial web site and I was wondering if any one else is using one? I have fitted it but the spark looks weak and when riding around slowly every so often it just stalls!! I have tried different carbs (new Mikuni and Dellorto) so it is not a carb problem and of course plugs, I also fitted the old points system and all is ok. I know the flywheel is a lot lighter but that shouldn't let it stall!?!?! Its more like it cuts out rather than stalls and will start easily straight away with one kick. The main reason for changing to electronic was …

  3. Hi, I've decided to join the twinshock gang and have gone for my teenage favorites. I had several Ossa's as a schoolboy and owned a Gripper back in 1981/2 when it served me well. Trouble is I don't really remember much about the bike and need some help with basic stuff like fuel mix, plugs, gearbox oil etc. Bike is basically ready to ride and hopefully will get its first outing at Oxenlaw on Saturday. I'm looking for an "expert" who can answer my daft questions as and when they arise and offer tips on set up and maintenance. It would also be nice to know how many grippers are being regularly trialed, I haven't seen any in the North East. Thanks, Gary.

  5. Hi all Seriously thinking of getting into actually riding my twinshocks again instead of just collecting. In in the Poole area, and just wondered which clubs are still offering something suitable for my old mounts and older bones! I spoke to Annie Chandler last night as I was a good pal of Geoff's and Sotton Vikings no longer run any events. I've obviously been out of this far too long and have no idea where all these years have gone. Next dilemma will be which bike to ride, but I'm sure I'll find a favourate. Wayne....

I have a ty250d project bike i'm working on, frame has had headstock steepened & peg mounts moved with modern pegs by previous rider. I've just gotten the parts to rebuild the foxshox(trials type) that were already fitted, had to reposition mounts to bring bike back to level. Now for the big question, are there any worthwhile mods that can be done to the forks while they're apart for seals, ie possibly remake damper rods in alloy with any suggested alterations to hole size & position. I know they'll never feel anything like a set of modern forks but if they can be improved why shouldn't i do it?

  7. Well, I'm starting to reassemble the 348. Have a new piston in a freshly bored cylinder, got the cylinder and head on today. Now for the god-forsaken exhaust...... I struggled getting it off when dissassembling the engine, in fact, I couldn't remove the exhaust until I removed the clyinder first. Today, I forgot to position it in place between the frame and back wheel, and between the front frame downtubes, before installing the cylinder. Can a guy get it on by first removing the rear wheel and rear fender [ thus allowing room to manouver it fore and aft whilst getting the front pipe aligned and bolted up ]? I don't really want to have to remove the head / cylinder …

I've just been looking at a clip of an indoor trial from Italy, the minder/catcher was raised on a forklift truck, to his position, looked at least 15ft from the ground. This got me thinking 'well that's a bit dangerous'. Arena Trials have lots of sharp edges and hard floors, wasn't there a Japanese rider who broke both wrists a couple of years ago. The sections seem to get more and more dangerous as the years progress, is it that the promoters have to forfill the publics need for more and more excitement. What worries me, is our up and coming stars, i'd hate to see them, risking themselves for the sake of entertainment and possibly risking the real goal of world champio…

  12. Hello all, I recently bought a 250 Armstrong and I'm looking at replacing the carburettor. I know I could buy a new Amal MK2 for a standard replacement but was thinking of upgrading to something newer. I tried the Dellorto from my Gas Gas for size but the choke mechanism fouls the frame plus mounting is different diameter. I also tried a Dellorto from a Beta Zero and whilst the fitting is ok the carb is set up for RH so no good. I am therefore thinking of an OKO, (can't afford a Keihn) I saw a picture of an OKO on Woody's Armstrong plus another member was thinking of trying one on his 250cc (Bossitt??) What size would suit the 250 best? 28mm or 26mm. Any feedback on how…

Hello all, I am having a problem with my Armstrong CMT 250 (Hiro) and wonder if anyone may be able help. The bike hadnt been run for many years when I bought it so I wasnt too surprised that when I did get it going it sounded very lean on low revs and no amount of carb cleaning made any difference. Mains were a little noisy too so I stripped the motor and replaced all the bearings and seals thinking it was drawing air through crankcase seals. I also bought a 26mm OKO with a range of pilot jets to replace the worn Amal Mk2. However on rebuilding the motor the problem still exists. The bike has fair compression, although I havent measured it. It starts easily on choke and…

Can anyone help? I have a problem with my recently finished Armstrong. It has a Mk2 Amal concentric on it, goes great for half a trial then tick over gradually increases and the engine starts to run lean, knocks & rattles etc. Any attempt to adjust the pilot screw & tick over are fruitless once this happens. It is very like what happens when you are running low on fuel ie the engine speed increases, but in this case it does not stop running. If I go to the bike now it will run sweetly until it has been going a while. If asked I would say it has an air leak but the engine has new crank seals and new base gasket. Changing the spark plug when its knocking doesn't im…

My Armstrong CMT310 with the Hiro 323cc engine starts pinging about 30 minutes into a ride. I am running premium fuel with an octane booster and an NGK BP6ES plug. The ignition is a Kokusan CDI, can the timing be adjusted with this ignition? All I can find in the hand book is to center the screws in the slots on the stator backing plate. Anyone have any ideas to try? I have a spare CDI unit and have swapped out the original but stil have the same problem. Rick

Hi all, i`m trying to trace the history of my 83/84 armstrong hiro. Its head and barrel have been drilled both front and back?? and it has been fitted with number holders on the silencer and left seat rail. Its reg is A504 UAE if anyone recognises it or can help. Its a fit old bike with loads of grunt and once I get the leaking tank sealed i`ll be using it instead of my fantic so it would be good to know its history.
