Youth Trials

Can anybody tell me what ages go against what engine sizes or classes for youths? I've two lads aged 9 (10 in Dec) and 7 (8 next Aug), and I'm not sure of what bikes they could ride on. I've had a mooch around on the ACU website but I can't find the info. I've just bought an aging Yam TY80 for them to get to grips with, with the idea that they can learn clutch control etc. They've both riden 50 & 80cc MX auto's before, but the boss is worried about them hurtling around a track doing MX. As I've just bought myself a 270 Beta, I was thinking that the 3 of us could go off and ride together etc. And finally, could they compete ok on the TY80 or would they need someth…

All an earlier post discussed some mods to a Beta rev 80, i wondered if anyone had some more detail on these. [*]Modification to the front pipe [*]what should i set the squish thickness to? [*]opening the airbox inlet apertures [*]fitting a rear shock from another Beta [*]what weight fork oil do people use? lastly, what is the average piston life?? or do you just replace when it shows piston slap.

Hi There i am just starting to look at getting into trials as a newbie and my ten year old son wants to get a bike as well. he has had an oset 16 but this has got too small or him but i do not know what to buy him next. we want to practise but but also do some club trials as well Do i go for an oset20 or do i go down the petrol engined route with a 50cc or 80cc geared or auto? he did ride a 65cc motocross bike and had an auto before that so i think he would be ok getting used to having a clutch please help all advice welcome as i do not have a clue on youth trials Thanks

The first two A & B nationals have prompted much discussion re time limits,out of class etc. Ithought it might be helpful for some experienced lads and dads to say here how they would like to see national trials set out. As a clerk of the coirse myself and trials national dad in my 5th season I dont want any organisers to see this as critisam as I know that running atrial is far from a perfect science and I guarantee you will not please all the people all the time.It also depends on hw much help you get. There sure are a lot of cheap xr70s etc out there. Anybody go old school and adapt one for a beginner trialer? It seems to me like the venerably TY80 wasn't far from a trail bike. I'm a pretty good welder so I'm not afraid to move pegs or even change neck angle. Just looking to give an 8-year-old a bit of a feeling of a trials bike on a budget. It seems to me a grunty 4 stroke would be a good introduction.

Is it possible to convert a beta 80 cable clutch to hydraulic? Any know what year they changed? thanks

Have any TY80 dads out there fitted an "easy clutch" or clutch lightener? Last sunday my daughter came to trials practice, and has not stopped talking about wanting a bike since after watching my friends daughter riding her beta evo 80. It may be a flash in the pan as kids have a change of heart once something else catches their eye so i am going to hold back for a few weeks to see if she is still interested and if so,will look at getting her started, Thinking of an automatic to start and when she has confidence,change to a geared machine but what bike to start on ??? or should i go for a yamaha ty80 and get her riding a geared bike straight off. she is only 9 so a ty would be ideal size and power wise without too much expense but i cant thi…

Hello from the Canadian side of the 'pond'. My son has a 2006 TXT 80 and I'm thinking of "refreshing" the top end. The OEM cylinder is a Morini and is made with iron (and is not Nicosil (sp?) coated). As a result I am considering a complete kit from Italkit (model CK.22.750.G). Anything I do will be an improvement to the (lack of) power output. Does anyone have any experience with Italkit and/or this particular kit? At the moment I'm trying to determine if the kit is available and from whom I could order it. Scooters and their support shops are not very popular here in N.A. Your help is appreciated. Dale

British Championship youth B leader Jack Sheppard crashed out of the superb YMSA 3 day at the weekend on the second day. He had ridden his socks off the previous day riding up a class on the top route finishing second to team mate Jack Challoner. On the second day,disaster struck after coming back off a rock step at the end of the second lap. Jack landed on his back and the betas handlebar used the back of his hand to soften its landing leaving him in immense pain and braking the metacarpel bone He has been back to hospital today after some temporary work and the opinion is that it will be 6 weeks in plaster. Hi, I'm having real trouble trying to back bleed the clutch on my son's 2009 Beta 80. I've used this method before on other bikes and have had no problems at all. There seems to be a problem at the master cylinder, because when I removed the brake line from the master cylinder I could see a nice flow of fluid coming out of the end of the line - when pumping through with the syringe - from the nipple at the slave cylinder. When it's connected back up, nothing is coming through. I believe the technique is to leave the lever released while back bleeding - which is what I am doing. First post for me... I know this kind of question turns up fairly often and I've read through the similar questions on the forum, but my Son is new to trials; ridden probably 5 times (2 local trials with me) and currently has a Beta minitrial (do not seem to get that good a rep on the board but it has done him well for the short period he has had it since he now has confidence in his balance and braking skills to some extent without the confusion of bringing a clutch into the situation). However after the short intro on this bike (he is 9, average size) I think progress to a manual bike with more power is required, the auto minitrial is limited on some of the hills. T…

Since we're hopefully heading off to the UEM round in Spain, does anyone know the cheapest way to get across the channel? A rubber dinghy is out as we can't fit the van and caravan into one. I've managed to get some reasonable quotes but I'll bet some Yorkshireman has probably managed better!

Rumours about a A class rider changing make this weekend. Richard Sadler is Entered along with the "usual" suspects and Joanne Coles will be riding fresh from Her Ladies world podium. A class is down to 16 riders but a healthier turnout in the B class.

Hi, I'm just starting my 7 year old lad in trials, bought him a Beta 50, joined a club/practice area and we've had several outings now and i've just let him ride the bike, get used to the ground, go up and down a few hills etc but my question is what to do next? Do you just let them go at their own pace? - he's more than happy just riding the bike at the moment Try and get him to ride over more difficult terrain without him realising? Or just set up some small obstacles/sections and get him to try them? I don't want to push him to hard and get to the point where he's not enjoying it Cheers
