Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

So I've been working on learning as much as I can as fast as I can. Its actually been going a lot better than I thought. I can balance about 50% of the time. My clutch control and throttle control are 4x what it used to be. One think Im still having problems with is timing. Such as loading the suspension and letting out the clutch to lunch the bike. I've been working on small bunny hoops to help this. One on thing that I'm having problems with and always have even on the bigger bike is remembering to cover the break during a wheelie. I really want to use the wheelie to help find that rear glance point. One other thing i've learned is a rear wheel pivot! kind of fun actual…

  3. I've had bikes for many years and regularly MTB, BUT... None of that has helped prepare me for trials!! Just bought and rebuilt the suspension (forks, swingarm and linkage bearings) so giving it a first outing. It's quite a unique riding technique isn't it! After watching a few you tube vids, here is my first attempt in the garden! Any comments, tips, criticisms from all you experienced guys welcomed!

  6. Hey, All!!! Decided I'd have my daughter video one of my little practice sections at my home. After watching it, I'm kind of ashamed of how poorly I ride. If you folks see something that you can point out to help a Novice/Intermediate level rider to improve, please send the help in a post. I caught my front wheel essentially just "skimming" right over some of the contact points on the log (i.e., didn't hit the front wheel where I wanted to....). I also seem pretty stiff, and don't seem to bend my knees enough. And I haven't a clue how to fix these problems..... I really want to improve my level of riding. I want to get the fundamentals down well first, and figure other …

  7. Since a group of us have gone nuts with trials riding the past year, it's also dramatically changed the way we ride our dirt bikes as we apply the trials techniques to the bigger heavier bikes. As a result, we've slowed down a lot, get less injuries. do far less damage to the environment and (hopefully) have become better riders as a result! If anyone is interested, we've been posting these vids and articles. we've started a website about cross training techniques as well here. BEFORE YOU START Protective gear Setting up your suspension BASIC CROSS TRAINING TECHNIQUES Braking Feathering and dropping the clutch Riding across a camber…

Dont know about you guys, but heat stress kills me and my trials stamina, performance. Being originally from cold, rainy Scotland and now living in the really hot, dry, southwest USA the heat just saps my energy and subsequently brings on muscle cramps that are totally painful, subsequently causing me to cramp out of the trial. I have listened to many a person telling me to eat bananas, salt, magnesium, drink more water, drink pickle juice, take an Aspirin before the trial etc etc. Nothing worked. I had a doctor check my electrolytes and all was well. I tried numerous off the shelf products all claiming to stop the cramps, nothing worked. I have taken high doses o…

  9. stitched this latest training vid together but can't help feeling i'm probably missing some crucial points. i'm only clubman so basically have never done any spotting, only filming the upper grades doing it. i've made a typo in the vid so will be redoing it shortly... if any experienced riders can suggest tips i've missed please let me know and i'll incorporate them into the revised one. thanks in advance!

Last trip out I ventured down a dry creek bed and did a few dabs until I came to a 2ft6" to 3 ft washed away area that was a straight drop... and it was a two-footed 5 to take stock of the situation. MMMMmmmmm! I felt I might go back over front so chickened out. For me, rightly so... no need for any injury at this stage! I spent 5 mins piling rocks against the face at a 45 degree to enable me to go down the face for now and continue practicing riding rocks with minimal dabs. Remove rocks with more experience. You wouldn't believe it... as I'm moving rocks against drop-off face this voice from above says "Hey Mate!... No altering the section!!!" Thats right! My chee…

Hi guys I think most of you have read a bit of my story, and I appreciate all the help given. I have less than 2 weeks untill my next comp....South African nationals round 3 &4. A 2 day trials in unfamiliar terain. It will be my second comp riding intermediate so im still unsure what to expect but im doing my best to be ready. I would desperately like a top 5 position although I doubt it (will be p!ssed with myself if I dont get top 10). Yes I put pressure on myself but thats what drives me In my less than 2 weeks build up......how should I train? (I know what to work on but what sort of schedule). I have a dodgy shoulder and dont want to flare it up (hopping). Iv…

New moto trials rider. 2006 Beta Rev3. I'm trying to get the rear wheel off the ground to do some endos and whatnot. I'm not finding the power I really need to get this done. I've tried "jumping" like I've read in a different thread, but it doesn't seem to happen. I can nose wheelie and endo a bicycle with ease, using one finger on the brake. The only way i'm able to get enough power on the moto is to use two fingers and pull really hard. As I'm new to moto trials I'm wondering if the front brake needs maintenance? Or is this just a technique thing? The pads look thick and everything looks clean. Plenty of fluid too. Is it common to need two fingers or should…

G'day all, One thing that has become apparent since doing some miles off-road (since last January) is my fitness, or more correctly the lack of it! I cruise many hours on my road bike but the trials bike has shown up some need for attention to fitness. This "trials caper" later in life needs some resolve to gain some fitness but not injure myself in the process! Hehehehehe I'm reasonably strong for age and weigh 87 kg at 178cms, but the aerobic fitness is lacking as shown by my arms and legs giving out before my concentration getting around the next obstacle. I have some past injuries from motocross when young.... like a collapsed disc in neck and bad vertebrae in low…

Hi guys I would like to know how often you boyz train according to the weather? The sun shines here most of the time but its been raining for the last 2 days so I figured ill use the wearher to vary my training and learn a bit more about finding traction. Ill be up at 4am to load up and take advantage of this rubbish weather as the rain seems to stop by late morning. So, if any, how often or important do you think training in cr@ppy weather is necessary?
