I've lost spark, model 85 250 alpina. not sure if whats there is original as a brake light was added long ago. mostly want to know how/where to test each component before buying new coil, etc. been running fine then just quit like out of fuel. added fuel (knew it was low) but would not start. cleaned the carb, etc but still nothing. then started and ran for few seconds then dead again. that's when I checked for spark and saw none. the two loose black wires (heavier one from the high tension coil, other from wire harness) were connected to terminal opposite the red wire. 1) how do I test output from magneto 2) how do I test the ht coil

Does anyone know the maximum overbore for an M116 Alpina? When I bought mine 20-odd years ago it had been left outside with the head off and no piston, just a sad rusty con rod flapping around in the cylinder. A quick measurement with vernier calipers shows the bore is already at 83.8-something mm, so probably was on second overbore (83.75) already, and it is quite rusty. It might just clean up to 84mm, but that could be wishful thinking. I know that at some point they went to a thicker liner that could be bored out further but I'm not sure when the change occured. Currently the liner is about 3.6mm wall thickness so would have been about 3.85mm or so when new. I see ther…

Hi, I'm new to this site and it looks like there are some very helpful and knowledgeable people out there. I recently purchased a Model 85 as a box of bits, engine and frame numbers match. I have some questions; The swingarm axle holes are 14-15mm but the axle is 17mm, has someone put on the wrong arm? Looking at the photo's I have a earlier frame as it's got bolt-on brackets for the footrests and the swingarm is "smooth" no holes for oilers etc. Can anyone tell me have I right swingarm? and did Bultaco change the axle/axle hole? Seperately I purchased a 68 Matador front wheel with the 6.25" brake will it fit without any issues? Second queery, could I fit a Matador…

took it for a trip after 30m ish it suddenly lost power but stiil ran but sometimes stopped, fuel and spark seem ok, cant see any leaks, compresion seems ok crankcase seal perhaps? any thoughts? steve

Prior to rebuilding this long-term (dismantled) project, I've begun dragging out and examining parts, with a view to doing a trial assembly before parting with serious money on chrome plating, powder coating, etc. Starting with the frame, I found two sawn/ground off welds on the seat rails either side of the air filter (arrowed in pic.) :- Anyone out there know what was there originally ? Brackets/ lugs/ a bridge across the filter ? ....and do I need to replace it ? I have a set of 1971 Alpina forks on a C15. The forks came with no mud guard or mud guard brackets. I have seen a few pictures of Alipnas with high MX style mud guards but I want to run low ..trials, standard type plastic mud guards. What can I use for brackets? Where can I get them? Should I just make some U shaped Aluminium bends or would something stiff... more like a brace/ bracket be desirable? Thanks!!

Hi, I am new to this forum. So here is my first post. I have just bought a 1978 Alpina 350 model 213: with the plan of using it for trail riding here in France. The fuel tank is glassfibre and is already suffering from Ethanol degradation. I am thinking of fitting a new tank. My questions are: Can i get a larger tank? Can I fit a larger tank? Will a Pursang tank fit? Are plastic tanks Ethanol resistant? Looking forward to your advices. Sea Kayaker

I have a 350 Alpina 213, history unknown but supposedly restored; it’s still got the original Bing carb. The bike starts after a few kicks but not with the choke - won’t start if you use it. More of an issue, though possibly related, is if I drop down to first for any difficult bits (I use it for greenlaning here) the motor doesn’t respond to the throttle, dies and won’t restart unless I give it a long bump. I’ve had the carb apart and cleaned it as best I can, air filter cleaned and oiled, and plug changed, though no further work done yet - any suggestions? I assume it’s running the original ignition setup but haven’t had the side off to check.

Can someone please tell me how many ohms the brake light resistor has as used on the Model 85 and similar? Would someone who has such a bike be willing to measure the resistance? Thanks.

Does anyone know the ratio of the AVIS-VDO speedometer drive used on the Model 85 Alpina?

Would someone please tell me how the black and green wires going to the tail light assembly of my Model 85 are supposed to be wired? The schematic in the shop manual could easily be interpreted as those two wires being joined together in the tail light, but we know that's not right. I'm inclined to think the green wire goes to the brake light bulb and the black wire goes to the tail light bulb. True?

My Alpina Model 188 was originaly fitted with a battery. I do not have a wiring diagram but I assume that it will need to have a rectifier fitted. This was missing when I bought the bike. Rather than trying to track down an original rectifier that will probabaly be old stock, expensive and not work anyway I was planning of fitting a simple bridge rectifier from RS or other supplier of choice. Has anybody had an experiance of a similar mod and can give advice? I think most owners will not have expriance of Bultaco's with batteries so am not expecting a reply but thought I would ask anyway. When I was 15 my father bought a brand new Bultaco Sherpa, needless to say I spent more time on it than he did due to his work commitments. I loved it, super reliable and great to ride. Come forward 40 odd yrs and this (what I thought was a Sherpa) came up for sale locally at a reasonable price. it's all there, yes needs some work and a restore/rebuild but it doesn't look too bad. After checking the engine and frame number it seems it's an early Alpina M-8500619 and 9700356. I have had a quick search and it seem that these early Alpinas are basically a Sherpa with slightly different gear ratios. So here are my questions, I know this is the place to ask. Does it look…

I've been visiting my local bike shop a bit too often now, after spotting this beauty! M-92 model and needing lots of love, as when we pulled the head, not even a piston inside!!! I love vintage trials, and trying to get a bit better as a rider, and very happy with my little yellow bike. But something tells me I should try to rebuild this beast and bring it back to life. Am I crazy? Will it be worth all the effort, tears and getting yelled at by family and friends that I've lost my mind?!?!? But it's soooo pretty! Any and all advice is welcome. ANd I know this bike won't make me a better rider, but I sure will look cool! Thanks!

hi guys just back of my trials hols. ive had problems with the amal carb on my 199A this came with the bike its oiling the plugs up affter a few trials. because its runing to rich ive tryd the air screw ive put new pilot jet in new air fiter still the same can anybody help

When re-assembling an Amal carb, should you put anything on the new float chamber gasket? Oil or grease? Or should it go in dry? Also, would you put a wee bit of grease or Vaseline on the rubber 'o' rings on the jets? Cheers D

hi got a amal carb on my 151 and in all fairness its not too bad I was going to service it with new jets gaskets the full works or would you go down the route of fitting a mikuni carb ? also anyone know the size of the needle and main jet as standard ? I think needle on mine is a bit worn any help advice appreciated . cheers

I’m in the process of rebuilding the Spanish Amal 930 concentric on my 1971 Lobito 175 Mk4. The needle jet is stamped 106A, and that’s what is listed in the owner’s manual as the correct jet. Amal concentrics had long and short needle jets and some jets were for 4 stroke applications, with others being for two strokes. I have seen lots of Amal needle jets for sale that are designated 106, but not 106A. Does anyone know what the difference is? Thanks for any help!
