Last fall I cracked the primary cover on my M98 Sherpina when I hit a rock at a trial. Luckily I was able to repair the cover, but ever since I’ve been a bit nervous about going through rocky sections. The standard skidplate, or bash plate, on the M98 is just some a perforated sheet between the frame rails. It’s made contact with a few objects over the years, but it offers zero protection for the primary and flywheel covers. I’ve seen a few homemade skidplates, so I decided to try and make my own. The material I selected was a 17” x 14” x 5/16” (432mm x 356mm x 8mm) cutting board purchased from Target for $15. Originally I wanted to use 1/4” (6mm) UHMW and may still…

hello, I need to jump right in with a question. I tried a few searches but am coming up empty handed. So, my Bultaco Sherpa T appeared complete when I got it, and months later when I get to maaking it run I realize a few parts are missing. The side cover was put back on to look complete, even though the clutch rod and ball bearing were missing, and the flywheel nut was missing. I also failry certain one my sleeve gear bushes (111-047) is missing. I can see one way down on the shaft, but not near the end, and I have what seems like too much play on my sprocket shaft. My questions are- am I missing one based on this photo? Where can I buy one- I have had zero …

hi just put all new jets and needle in my amal carb and its a massive difference on my 151 350cc with the old needle and jets air screw mix was about 1 1/4 turns out . with new needle and jets I can only get it 3/4 of a turn out to run smooth. if I turn it past 3/4 the engine starts to die so 3/4 is about right and bike starts and rides ok. I thought only being 3/4 turn out would be a bit rich ive fitted it with the same jets and needle as I took out as standard. so guess the answer I want is it better to have it a tad on the rich side rather than a little lean? I know bikes run hot if there running lean are they likely to run a bit hot if running a bit rich ? th…

HI guys, Does any one know of an engineer in the bristol area who would take on small jobs. I am on about silly small jobs that you can do at home with a lathe and a piller drill. the problem is that i have never used a lathe and i have not god the money to buy a decent one. All i need is the odd bush to be made or a spacer rather then 20 odd washers. Whilst i am on the topic how does one learn to use such equipment, I know you gents more then likely learnt at school however i am of the generation where we had to learn sewing and cookery at school rather then skills that are usefull in life. ( just to let you know i could cook a fry up before school taught me how to b…

I am trying to gear down my' 76 model 183. The current sprockets are 11T front and 46T rear. I'd like to lay my hands on a 10T (or even better a 9T) front from somewhere but they seem to be unobtainable. I could go larger on the rear but to get anything over a 4% reduction I wold have to get a custom sprocket made and increase the diameter which I don't really want to do. A 10T front will give me just over 9%, a 10T/48T will give me almost 13%. Any suggestions ?

I've owned an 79 Sherpa 350T for many years, both my boys learnt to ride on it and now decided it needs some further refurbishment and attention than my time and capabilities allow. It runs fine, but has an annoying oil leak/drip Engine is currently out of the bike whilst the frame is being refurbished.. Can anyone of you point me in the right direction of a decent professional mechanic/bike workshop capable of stripping and giving the engine a 'once over', fixing the leak and fitting electronic ignition? Ideally South of England if possible? Thanks in advance Dunc

Hi, while inspecting my newly acquired Sherpa 350 mod 199 I noticed a wobbly front wheel. After taking apart and comparing with the parts book I noticed that I am missing a spacer. Does anybody probably have the needed width of that spacer so that I can make one? Arrow marked item on pic! Raoul

I've just got back from Telford (Will I never learn? What an expensive waste of time). There were a few nice Bultacos, but one in particular stood out, rebuilt by Vazquez in Spain. Did anyone else see the superb airbox and side panels on it? A work of art, but where on earth can I get some? I've trawled the web and found the site (motosvasquez.com - well worth a look) but my total lack of Spanish isn't helping me to get in touch with them. I am going to email them in the hope that they understand English, but any further suggestions would be gratefully received thanks. I attach some photos - Dave Denham should stock these!

was tentatively planning on riding my father's bike in a poker run but approved spark arrestor mufflers are required. the club organizing the event are very strick about it- it's state land so they have to be. all these years (he bought it new) I've assumed the stock muffler was U.S. Forest Service approved (which is the standard here in the states). since it's not fiberglass packed it shouldn't NEED to be a spark arrestor design but 'rules are rules' they will say. were there ever units made for the alpina and/or what are my options?

I recently converted my M49 to an electronic ignition using the Electrex product - works great out of the box! In the stock configuration, the manual specifies a spark plug gap of 0.35 to 0.45 mm. Wondering if with the newer electronic ignition, should I be using a larger spark plug gap like 0.60mm to possibly get a fatter spark??

Over the weekend I competed in a vintage trials and a poker run on my M98 “Sherpina”. Both had some high-speed open field sections where I had the bike WFO in 5th gear. Twice the bike began to miss and sputter at full throttle. Changing the spark plug fixed the issue. Looking for an answer I discovered lead-fouling of spark plugs. This is more common in aviation, but it seems to make sense. Back in May I purchased some leaded race fuel, Trick 110, which I mixed 50/50 with non-ethanol premium (92 RON+MON/2), for running in my vintage motocross bike which needs the higher octane. Since I didn’t want the fuel to go to waste, I have been using it in other bikes. Two of the bi…
