Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

Hi Booked my Sherpa in for MOT with a local comp shop (the owners son rides trIals). He said that if it was fitted with a IRC (TR 011R) rear tyre then they are not marked for road use and the bike will fail the MOT. Examined the tyre and, no 6 digit number or E marking. So does that mean that nearly all the competitors in Classic trials riders that use the Highways are not legal:- NO MOT THUS NO INSURANCE Comments please!!! Regards Martin

part way through road registering my gas gas 280 txt progress: MOT Dating letter Insured on VIN number V55/5 filled in and sent off Came back saying i needed to apply for a NOVA to sort VAT out. did this online ands its telling me i now owe £130 import tax on it. The dating letter tells me it was imported by the offical gas gas importer, surely this would have been done legit and all import duties would be payed at the time???? Been looking to insure my new Gas Gas (not yet picked up) for fire & theft from home as it will be worth £5k+. I tried Carole Nash off road insurance and they won't insure anything over £5k at all. I can't find anyone else. MSM only cover road registered bikes but I don't need to register it on the road and doing that will also make it more expensive as I'll have to tax it as well as register and insure it. Anyone else do off road theft insurance?

Hi all, Nearly got the old M27 ready for a first firing so starting to think about getting the original reg number back. All I have documents wise is tax discs up to 1980 in tatty condition and the rear number plate with just the outline of the lettering which has long since peeled off. Photo attached. I understand I will need to get an owners club to sign off that the bikes genuine but theres no Bultaco owners club so who do I go to? Anybody got advice on the pitfalls and perils I face? Rightio, Typically I've left this all to the last minute I've finally passed my test today and am doing the Jack Wood trial on the 31st (road work involved). I've done a bit of research and people seem to be getting charged roughly £100-£200 for insurance and the general opinion is that msm seem to be best seeing as they have a propper trials bike policy. Now I got a quote from them for £210ish third party and £270ish third party fire and theft. I know that's more than others I have seen but I am only 19. So that sounds kind of reasonable at my age? Hi All, Just after some advise on the current situation and if anyone had been in the same situation as myself. I had a Bete Evo 300cc 2015 Trials bike stolen in September 2016, this was insured through a well known high street insurer. When insured the trials bike I explained that it was for off road use and had no v5 or any road lights. Plus also no key for ignition. The trials bike was used for off road practice and competition. When the trials bike got stolen I went through the general routine ie informing police, issued with crime number and also informing the Insurance company. I have been asked if I would stand for the committee on my club (happy to). One of the debates about the new ACU website was about the event insurance - so checking people are ACU members with a valid licence. With no plastic card this is difficult for the organisers on the day. One of the current committee has suggested looking at AMCA membership. I would like to know what is the general view about the ACU insurance? Do people think they are insured whilst riding a trial and what do they think they are covered for? As the title says who do you insure your evo with? My current broker does not recognise it and said to go to Norwich Union direct. Which I have done but I need a couple of quotes before I commit. Wasn't there an ACU linked scheme or am I imagining that? Thanks Dave

As I'm not going to ride on the road at all I want to avoid any unnecessary hassle, so what is involved in buying a bike with a V5? Do I just fill out the V5 as a SORN and nothing else? Cheers

Hello Just after some advice. Pretty much getting there with the registering my Yam TY175. On the case with NOVA, have a dating letter from Yamaha etc. Just completing the V55/5. As trials bikes are exempt from type approval, can I leave all the boxes that say 'get this information from the certificate of conformity' blank? Or is certificate of conformity something completely different? Wheelbase, Mass etc? Thanks for your help. Cheers Dave

Hi, does anyone know if the Type Approval Exemption for Trials Bikes still applies. I am trying to road register a 4RT and I I have the certificate of newness. The DVLA guidance notes for registering a vehicle in 2012 (form V355) said: Competition motorcycles are excluded from the EU type approval system (vehicles intended for use in competition, on roads or in off-road conditions) Directive 2002/24/EC Article 1. Para. 1, item d) and thus from Motorcycle single vehicle approval (MSVA) as well. The only competitions involving road use, and hence the registration of motorcycles are trials and enduros. Just collected new EVO 200 2010 ha ha! dead chuffed.......Can anybody reccomend good (including best price) insurer to get road tax who might just recognise Make model etc. Just spoke to my current insurer (... broker called Aquote.. who had previosly insured my rev3 200 who in turn put the bis with Norwich Union..fully comp 85 quid last year I am ancient!....) They went through usual stuff called the underwriters etc who came up with 165 quid and a lot of huffing about racing off road use etc. So is ther somebody out ther who wants to insure my bike against theft from most secure garage ever and maybe 500 miles a year at top speed of say 60 mph?

Hi, Need a little advice if possible. I have a 349 Cota which I've had for a few years now and have decided that this year I'll get the bike finished. It's still in bits but I've contacted Sandifords for an age related certificate which they cannot issue now due to not being authorised by HMRC. Can the bike be registered without this document? I don't know if the bike was ever registered as there were no documents supplied with the bike when I bought it. I'm pretty sure it's a Mark 1 349 from the engine and chassis numbers, probably late 1979 early 1980. The numbers are: 51M 18186. I would prefer an age related registration number rather than a Q plate if possible. …

Hey guys About to register my bikes for the first time. Sorted the majority of the paperwork out but now I need to get it daylight MOT. As its the first time I do not need to fit a plate as its registered on frame number. But what about the rest of the bike. Do I only really need the following: Trials Tyres with "E" marked on them rotating the correct way. A rear reflector And a horn that is continuous. Have I missed anything? Also what horn have people got and how have they mounted the reflector? Thanks in advance
