Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

Does anyone know of an insurer who will insure a bike on the frame number for a short period to register the bike. When it is registered I will be able to put on a classic policy with other bikes but they will not insure on the frame number only. I know C Nash will do it on the frame number but I don't want a 12 month policy with them. Thanks...

Hi Chaps. I wonder if anyone can shed any light on my SORN situation? I've just bought a bike that was SORN'd by the previous owner. When we filled out the V5 for change of ownership I'm pretty certain that he ticked the 'currently SORN'd' box. My question is, do I need to do anything to keep it SORN'd (I'm not going to use it on the road)? And, how do I know that the DVLA will not fine me or do something else horrible to me if I've not filled out a SORN form as the new owner if that was what I'm supposed to do?? The DVLA website isn't that helpful in clarifying my situation, so hopefully collective knowledge/experience will be able to help me out?! Cheers, Ray

Have the rules on SORN changed? I normally re-sorn my bike every October but now the DVLA website keeps telling me that the bike is currently sorn? (the last time I Declared it was oct 2013)

Might be just me who is ignorant of SORN rules, but just in case; Bought a bike last October, was told it was SORN`ed.Heard nothing since from DVLA. Got it Insured and Mot`d last month, came to tax it and DVLA tell me SORN doesn`t transfer with change of ownership so a gap has appeared on their records, and a fine is due. Just had to write grovelling letter to local Taxation office to hopefully avoid fine, stating obviously that I wasn`t trying to avoid duty as tax exempt.. Should have done what the local criminals/joy riders do, and not bothered registering it in my name?

Ok, so I know that in the UK you officially need a horn and a motorbike-sized number plate for daytime running on the road, and in France you're ok with an LED front and tail light (brake light too?), and a mini number plate (not sure about horn) ... what about in Spain? What's the minimum equipment for a trials bike to be 100% legal?

I'm restoring a Bultaco Sherpa 198A which is already road registered with V5 now in my name and being over 40 years old eligible for historic status. However, to apply for historic status the bike has to be insured. When I enquired whether Bikesure my current bike insurance / broker company would add the Sherpa to my multi-bike policy, they said yes as long as the bike had a speedo fitted and asked for me to just send them photographic proof. Seems a bit strange as I didn't think this was a requirement for an MoT etc. but just wondered if anyone else had this experience? I'm trying to insure my 2 bikes, and it's proving an epic. Despite getting quotes from recommended insurers (Carole Nash, Bennets, Performance Direct), it appears that when you get into the T&Cs or definitions of the policies, they either do not cover 'Trials', any road use, or competitions. So, how do people cover their bikes for off road use, with some on road transiting between sections, and for use in trials competitions? Or are people being 'artistic' with the truth?

Just phoned Carol nash to get quote for Beta Evo and they declined saying insurers dont like field/monkey bikes because they get stolen a lot. I thought thats why we insured them!; however has any body got best deal recently on TpF&theft insurance for EVo?

Hi I have a tiger cub 1959 trials its registered in my name v5 ,I've been told I don't need a mot and its tax exempt its fully working and in good condition ,no lights, reflectors etc but I have fitted a horn how do I go about using it on a daytime licence I have also put a number plate on the rear mudguard

Am thinking of getting a 125cc trails bike gas gas or a beta. The plan is for it to be road legal as I can ride on road to a spots to use it. Questions I have: A. What speed would a typical 125 be able to reach and sustain? B. How much damage would be caused to a engine, by using it on road? C. Would there be any gearing changes I could make, to make the bike a bit more road friendly. If I got a beta I would be after getting the long range tank and seat setup. Hi guys, I rang Carol Nash today to insure my non road registered Beta Evo 200 2013, the girl asked if it was in a garage or shed i said it was in a 17 x 9 foot breeze block shed, she asked if i could get a car in to which i replied no as it only has a pedestrian sized door which is of steel construction, she said the underwriter would not accept the building as it was not classed as a garage.........Help!

hi i have a year old bike that i wish to insure, primarily against theft. It is road registered. i have heard that insurance companies are not interested if the bike has no ignition key but they seem to accept my reg number on the forms. Does anyone have any experience of this and any other advice. Is it best to have a policy including road use or not? Can anyone recommend any companies many thanks in advance
