  2. A much better idea ! Bloody heap of brittle alloy
  3. I bought a brand new 349 once on the first day of two weeks leave, within an hour of practice the hub shattered. The local trials shop laced a new one up the week after but all the spokes came out of the rim at the wrong angle. Another week went by and Sandifords put it right. A whole two weeks of freedom with no trialling, it was depressing So on that note if you'd like to send it to me I would love to vent my anger out on it with a sledge hammer !
  4. Will the spindle screw in to the threaded fork without using the first fork leg or going through the wheel ? Have you left the pinch bolt/s nipped up ?

    opinion

Mike Hann of Bishops Caundle used to do a Fantic '200 special', a 200 motor squeezed into a 125 frame. I seem to remember it was very competitive in the day. Just a thought. "Lovely little motor."
  6. You could try Faulkner springs, let them know the length, diameter and poundage and Bob's your Uncle they'll make one for you, simples as they say. Much better than a used and abused version
  7. The '99 bike was £3399 new from Sandifords
  8. It sounds like it could be the 'top hat' washers that go through the disk are worn. Really really badly worn wheel bearings.. Or it could be your steering head bearings, but then the front wheel wouldn't move slightly.
  9. You ought to go back through and read "why don't they just grip". I've always thought they were the miracle cure to finding that elusive grippy line but after reading that thread I'm glad I didn't get one. It's hard enough trying to stay clean without having to change an already dodgy riding style !!!
  10. The long spoke is the normal r/h thread and the short one the l/h thread. I've got a pack of new ones so it's been easy to check !
  11. Of course, yes ! I'd not thought of that as the first two I grabbed were r/h thread !
  12. I've just had a check on this and they are M4 X 0.7

    Rear wheel drag

Do the bearings actually turn freely with no lumpiness if you put your finger in where the spindle goes and turn ? If not then the bearings are rotating around the spindle. Could also be seized piston(s) in the caliper or no free play in the brake pedal.
  14. I'm hoping we get an answer on this, I'm still gunning for a failed crank seal, it'll easily cause intermittent issues. I've had several sheared woodruff keys with 247 and 349 Mont's, they were totally knacked and wouldn't even start. If it was the rings then surely it would be smoking all the time ? Anyone taking bets !
  15. It does sound like a crank case seal has gone.
  16. If I remember rightly the rear mudguard was a fibreglass affair, not too good
  17. I recently found my old Mecatecno on ebay for sale, the seller wouldn't 100% confirm the engine number or I would've bought it back Anyways I tracked it down and it's been given a good restoration job, the new owner didn't know it was registered so I passed all the info on. It's funny how a bike can mean quite a bit to someone, memories etc, even after selling it on to buy a more up to date and easier machine to ride ! I always fancied a 'Rolls Royce of trials bikes"
  18. I can almost see the adverts by leading aftermarket suppliers for a Honda inspired new slimline trials friendly rucksack. Fitted with twin 6v pumps, billet anodised trigger grip and adjustable pattern spray, for a guaranteed jet blasting grippy rock surface. Your choice of tubing colours optional....
  19. Forearm pump perhaps ? I used to use hand grippers a lot. There's quite a few different types of exercises you can do to improve stamina in that area.
  20. I presume you've checked it's got the right grade of oil in there ? Too thick an oil will most definitely help to create stiction between the plates. As already stated already it'll take a while of riding and warming up before they release. At least you know the box is working okay

    Montesa 330

I had one brand new, once upon a time ! I extended the clutch arm by a cm or two, it made quite a difference. The bite might change a bit but not by much.
  22. The kick start shaft has a lobe that's hidden away from view, a mistake many make is to mount the kick start too far forward. This means that by the time you get it in the position for a push, the lobe is much closer to punching a hole through your engine casing ! I did it on my first 349 and it made a helluva mess
  23. You've just got to love our differences Definitely a good chuckle !
  24. Well I'm glad it's running okay now, sounds like you needed a tad of patience. As has already been mentioned poofs out of the exhaust isn't too good, if there's some oily smoke it could hide a multitude of sins !
  25. It sounds like your friend bought the bike and had it running for a while. Then decided to tune it up and maybe improve it some what ? It sounds to me that in the process of changing the jets the tune was made worse. You had it brought around to yours, whereupon you rode it around the yard, proving that it still ran okay but gave it a 'handful of revs'. In the past on a new 1979 Montesa 247, I went through quite a few woodruff keys. Perhaps it was just an unfortunate failure of the key due to over revving, exactly what it's designed to do. If the key had failed in the past then any previous owner would surely have replaced the broken key, smoothed over any rough divits and reassembled, just as you yourself have done ? The key is far softer than the crank or flywheel and should, in theory, not cause too much damage. Some pictures would be great. I presume the rest of the bike is a shed of a restoration too ?
