Hello, Bought a ty250 as a running bike, saw video of it running ( i live far from where it came from), had it shipped and now i can't seem to get it running. I have kicked and kicked till my foot is bruised, have had it burp and fart a bit, won't start. Tried a bit of fuel directly in the plug hole which got it turn over 3 times but not catch and go. I've spoken with the seller he says he cleaned the carb as well as put new points and condenser on prior to the video. He said he had heard of the condenser packing it in on installation which doesn't make sense as he got it to run. I'm out of ideas, anyone have any insight. PS not sure how much difference this wi…

Hi I was getting on great restoring my 1978 Ty175 when today I kicked it over and the kick start spun round and cracked the engine case. I had kicked it over a few times over the last week since I got it going and it was OK but the kick start would fail to reset occasionally. So I have a couple of questions Firstly, why did this happen? Secondly, how easy is it to weld the cracked case? Thanks Iain

This is my plug after one section this past Sunday (and yes I cleared that one). Sorry about the picture - it's hard to get a close up picture, should have used a tripod. The bike is a TY250A, running 110 octane leaded gas, Bel Ray Synthetic mix oil. Any idea what caused this and second how can I avoid it in the future. By the way, I probably have at least 100 hours on this bike with no problems. Changed the plug and it fired up first kick. Thanks in advance. Alan

It would appear that my previous post of the same title was removed becasue I placed a link to an ebay auction which is against the rules of the forum. However this was not my ebay auction and I was only posting the link in order to show the colourway of the bike to try and establish the year and any other associated details of the bike. So instead, I've placed the picture instead (please note this is not my bike, but is an accurate representation of how it looks...albeit considerably cleaner). Many thanks for all of your previous comments and help. Maybe I should rstore it myself as a project?

  6. This might be a tough request to make, but I have a small dilemma. I have a stock 74 TY 250A and I have had everything rebuilt on the engine. But when I tried to install the piston, it touches the flywheel before the flywheel can rotate all the way around. So either I have the wrong piston or the wrong Connecting rod installed. My measurement for the piston skirt is 68.3 mm from the bottom of the lower piston ring to the bottom edge of the piston skirt. Does this seem to be about right? The piston is a genuine Yamaha, from CMS, part number 438-11631-01-96. If anyone has a loose TY 250A -1974 model piston laying around loose they can measure- it …

Dear All, A bit of a request for help here. I have just purchased a standard TY250E (493-300925) and am in the process of a complete strip and rebuild of the whole bike. All went well with the strip of the engine with just one item 'missing' and there is a contradiction between the repair manual I have and the on-line parts fiche I have looked at. So here's the problem: In the workshop manual it says to install a shim on to the primary drive side of the crank before installing it into the crankcase half (So the shim fits between the crank flywheel and the main bearing inner race). But when I look at the parts fiche it shows the shim fitted on the outside of the ma…

  9. Hi, Iv'e started restoring a Yamaha ty175 1976, this is my first bike and my first restoration project. I'm trying to restore it to its original looks to then bring to classic motorcycle shows. When starting it in the past it has kicked back at me and smashed the cluch/crankcase cover. I have repainted it and now starting to rebuild it but finding it hard to come across parts in my price range will a Yamaha DT175 kickstart and crankcase cover fit my Yamaha TY175. I will try and post some pictures of it on its way to a compleded TY! thanks,

Can anyone tell me where hose from rear of carb on exhaust side should be routed? Bike is 250c & standard vm26ss mikuni Appears to connect to the emulsion jet & I assume this is the air valve mentioned in the carb specs, at the moment the hose is approx 100mm long & have looped around front of carb to keep from being kinked shut What effect does this have?

I have just purchased a Yamaha TY 250 Majesty registered SOG ***S, First registered in Birmingham (any one here know the bike) Obviously it is a Yamaha framed bike. Needs cosmetics/ chassis sorting, it runs well though. Iwill have to mothball it for a while as I have just put the house up for sale so no bikes/ mess around until we move (yes dear) . It has a TY tank and not the coffin type and there is a well faded Mick Andrews sticker on the top of the fuel tank. I have seen a few colour schemes on them on here but what colour were they supposed to be, also using Silkolene comp 2 what mixture do I want to be using? Thanks in advance PS. The bloke who sold it to me ha…

Hi, just bought a ty125, been getting it ready to ride so done all the servicing bit n bobs. Went for a 15 min run and on return the reg plate is black with oil. I took the plug out and all the plug threads are coated in oil, do I assume the clutch side seal has gone? If so what is the procedure to repair this

Many of you will have read about my old problematic TY250S, after a year of trying I managed to almost fix it, still oils its plug up but takes weeks to do so. Any way that one may be for sale now because I have bought a new one! It is a 1988 TY 250 R with a talon drilled disc conversion, I have just finished renovating it, tell me what you think...

I have a 1990 Mono TY 250 - given its age and weight I dont understand why it cant be regarded as the same class as a twinshock as it is miles away from modern lightweight bikes? Does anyone still ride the TY 250 mono or have they all be consigned to the dreaded field bike of farmers kids ? Matthew

Hi Just purchased a bike for rebuild and wondering if anyone can advise the following: 1. What psi should i get when the bike is kicked over? Im getting a max of around 75 psi on the gauge? 2. Kick start sometimes engages sometimes not any suggestions? 3. Also got no spark from the coil, ammeter giving 12000 secondary and about 1 -2 ohms primary? (Book says 6000 and 5-6 repectively?) 4. Have checked the wire to the coil and ammeter showing 1.5 ohms as per book, but when kicked over doesnt seem to emitting any charge? any ideas what this should be? Appreciate any advice please. pete

Sorry if its been mentioned before. I have modified some yokes in the past to move the handle bars forward but I have just fitted some nice TY250 forks and Yokes to my 175. I didn't want to cut up the yokes like I did before so I thought I would try some Rox Risers. I like the extra height and adjustment that they give you. Just thought I would give it a mention for those people seeking some extra bar height

hello, just bought a second hand Yamaha TYZ250 (1998 version) and after having a 'play' for a couple of hours yesterday I have noticed some things... being my first trials bike I am not sure if this is 'normal' Firstly, from cold the clutch doesn't work fully disengaging (sp?) the drive, and so the bike 'creeps'. This only happens for a few hundred meters maybe, until things have warmed up. It then behaves faultlesslty (AFAIK). Is this normal? Would an oil change help things? (I haven't done anything to it yet because I only just bought it sat and was dying for a play on it ) Also I noticed the cooling fan came on quite quickly, is extended use OK? - I am fright…

How do i remove / dismantle the fork legs on a TY250 mono? I seem to remember a while back that there was a special tool required to go down the inside of the tube to lock it then you can undoo the bolt that goes up through the bottom of the slider. Be damned if i can find it though. Anybody have any details.
