Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Started by bigplonker,

Retired to France a few years back. Kept my old TES Greeves in the belief that I might one day ride again. Maybe the Talmag. Maybe the Scottish Pre-65. Maybe some classic French trial. Didn't happen though. Sold the bike and reluctantly accepted that my trials-riding days were over. Since then, as one does, I've been trawling the sales ads for interesting pre-65 and twinshock bikes, just out of curiosity. Seems that there are less and less good 'uns available, so more and more must be mothballed in old blokes' (and lassies') garages. And, crikey, how the prices have steadily risen over the last decade or two! Eight grand for a Cub. Ten grand for a 350 CCM. Fifteen grand f…

  2. I've bought an alloy square barrel which is apparently off a Dot which is in god nick and on std piston size. The exhaust port is bridged but above the transfer ports both sides are three holes about 5mm in diameter. Dont know anything about the barrel but just wondering if anybody knew why they were there?

Earlier this summer, rode my HT up to Solihull British Legion where I play snooker and meet my mates, when an old chap who I`ve often said hello to but never really spoke to showed an interest in my bike. Turns out he rode in ISDT`s on Triumphs in early 60`s( Wales and Garmisch) and rode works James ( I think) at some stage. He said he rode sleeved down 175 Cubs in ISDTs amongst other things, and since then I`ve done some work at his house, where he took me to his garage and showed me a pretty impressive large cardboard box of trials/scrambles trophys from 50s/60s. He`s early 80s now but still fit and well and wonder if any old friends/foes are on here?

I’ve checked the gear ratios on my Villiers 32a motor and it has standard set (As opposed to the wide ratios), does this mean it’s a road bike gearbox or the standard fitted to trials bikes? Also I have a 20T primary drive sprocket and a 15T gearbox sprocket, what would be the best size for the rear sprocket?

Mine´s on a ROA Super Foxter 200 (1960) that’s not run for about 40 years. Its a Spanish bike fitted with a Villers 197 7E. As far as I know, there´s nothing wrong with the box, apart from 28,000 Km of wear and tear and 40 years of rusting in a barn…Unfortunately, when it comes to the gearbox, I´ve fallen at the first hurdle. From what I´ve read in Motor Cycle & Cycle Trader´s Servicing Data Sheet No. 4 and referring to the exploded diagram (Parts System | EXG074 (villiers.info) the “Bush operating shaft outer” (9) should just slide off the operator shaft (20). But its stuck solid. No amount of pulling, heating or WD-40 has shifted it a mm. Any suggestions on whe…

I managed to spend 1/2 a day in the workshop today sorting my bikes out.(A bit anyway) Now I seem to be getting my HT sorted out a bit I'm getting more fussy about what I need to do to it.A mate of mine had a ride on it and said how something was wrong with the steering/frame geometry.(He is a high level rider, but I never admit it to him.)He mentioned that the front wheel tends to steer the first bit from straight ahead, then just flop toward full lock.I'd noticed it,not so much when riding it,but more when its on its side stand -touch the bars and they flop right around. When I'm riding it I dont really notice it as a problem, but after a trial my arms are about 2 foot long…

hi all recently finished my project bsa c15 trials bike fitted with the above ignition system, all is well with the bike until it warms up then it develops a very bad misfire and loss of power, the engine has had complete overhaul the carb has been stripped and cleaned and all jets have been renewed just wondered if anybody has had any problems with these ignition systems as i am starting to think that the coil/cdi unit may be faulted. thanks chris

  14. Started by eiger,

Evening folks, I'd be grateful of any advice for two problems, the first is in relation to a Triumph piston which I've bought from Burton Bike Bits as an upgrade for my 1960 C15 I've had the barrel rebored to 69mm but on fitting the recommended Triumph piston the gudgeon pin is too tight in the little end, it'll fit but far too tight. Do I need a different little end bush or is the con-rod just incompatible? The other problem concerns the clutch actuator arm, where the clutch pushrod seats into the barrel in the arm, the barrel has a pin through it but the pin carrier has sheared and no body has a replacement part, I could fabricate something solid but it looks like …

I see that some of you have fitted 16T Primary duplex sprocket. How does this compare to the standard 19T. I was going to leave my standard primary at 19T and fit the following 13t Gearbox 64t Rear sprocket 420 chain. What do you think.

  19. Hey guys! I picked up a Tiger Cub Trials recently and looking to mod the suspension to more better/modern-ish. For the front end I'm looking at baby cerianis as an option. Has anybody went this route fro a front end? Or would a set of 35 Betors be a smarter option. Thanks in advance! Jeff

  20. For my sins, I have just bought a 1962 C15 (distributor model) which looks the part of a trials bike but has a standard road version engine. It has a 375 monobloc Amal carb. I am going to change the engine duplex sprocket for a 18T and the gearbox sprocket for a 13T with a 64T on the rear wheel. Once I have taken off the lights, got it to run smoothly at low revs and got used to Pirelli tyres I hope to trial it. Am I on the right track to have a usable machine or do I need to do anything else? I had heard that lengthening the inlet manifold helps with low revs and torque - does anyone know if this is true? I would like to find a kick start that clears the footpegs -…
