I have a C15 with Alpina forks and 13 1/2" shocks. The frame is a 1960 C15S, gooseneck type and I struggle with the lack of ground clearance. It is 2 or 3 inches shorter than a TLR200. I also have a spare, later model, C15C frame. Do these later model competition frames have more ground clearance? How do others deal with this lack of clearance? Probably due to the offset Bultaco forks, it turns pretty well so I'm reluctant to just jack up the back end. Plus, I don't have that much ground clearance myself.

I've seen pics of a few HT's in UK and European trials with these big squarish mags mounted on them. I thought maybe a BTH...but perhaps not? A more modern aftermarket electronic one (with a battery pack?) guys are using? I had a devil of a time sorting out my OEM Lucas competition item, which seems to by working well after one final overhaul. Just curious as to what is being used out there and advantages. Regards, Doug

Still working on my 'new' 500 long stroke Ariel The carb is an Amal concentric 626 and it's worn. Specifically the slide is very worn with loads of movement in the bore but a new slide is very tight which suggests a poor / distorted body. The jetting is bushed pilot, 106 needle jet, 160 main jet, 3.5 slide. Now I could order a new carb with the same jetting but I think people are using 622 carbs these days to improve low speed running and control. If that is the case would I keep the same jetting and slide in the smaller carb or would I have to change it?

My 199 Cub is fitted with the R cam, it always has had this cam so I have no comparison but at a trial today I rode a 199cc Cub with similar engine set up to my bike but with the std Cub camshaft. Now I realise that bike set up is subjective and it could have been the 'new broom' thing but the std cam seemed to provide as much power at the bottom end but possibly a more controllable and steadier pick up. The R cam really makes the motor go once off tick over but having ridden the alternative set up I now am thinking might this be the way to go? In most trials you simply do not require loads of power, a smooth engine seems better so what cam is most widely used in the li…

All the talk about period correct Pre 65 trias motorcycles and I havent seen any mention of modern tires. My guess is if a specification tire such as a Chang Shin C186 was mandated then the sport would be much closer to the magic pre 65 than by limiting any other modification? Maybe this has been discussed already?

  10. When up at the Two Day pre 65 Trial I saw some Bantams which looked 3 speeders but were definitely not. Am I correct in thinking it is a simple (!) case of fitting a 3 speed crank in a 4 speed c/case to get the ignition on the ‘correct’ side and using 3 speed outed casings? Our son has a B175 based trials bike and we were thinking of converting a spare engine to a 3 speed look-a-like over the winter just for something to do. Any suggestions on what to replace the old Amal carb with – make (Mikuni ?), bore etc? He will never be competing in any restricted specification events so no worry on that issue. Jim

Many years of collecting and riding Bultacos means my father and I have number of relined/rebuilt Sherpa wheels, the later type single sided not full width. we are currently building a couple of Pre-65 C15 trials bikes that we hope to compete on in the Pre-65, Pre-67, Pre-70 what ever the class is that the all the other C15's on the day are entered into. the engines are C15G, so 1966ish, they will hopefully have B25 Alloy barrels fitted. One will be in a Drayton frame, one will be in a modified WD B40 frame, both will have forks with spindle mounted underneath, not leading axle. We normally ride in the south and south west ACU and AMCA, if we fitted the Sherpa wheels…

  13. In the process of building a pre 65 two stroke, never did get on that well with 4 strokes, so all i need now is a Villiers 32a or 37a engine. Anybody got one spare? Not bothered about the condition as i expect to have to replace the bearings etc anyway. Just dont want any holes or cracks. So can anybody help?

  14. Started by bantworm,

Could anyone out there in bogwheel land, please advise me as to the best modifications to do to my 1961 Bantam D7 frame for trials use. I have seen some really good photographs of frames on the Yorshire Classic web site and would like to add some more ground clearence to my frame by removing the lower footrest portion. I was thinking of adding two bashplate tubes under the cases and replacing the feeble front engine mount, with proper engine plates, cross drilling the downtube and welding in crosstubes for the bolts. Is this an advisable mod, or will it stop me being allowed in some Pre-65 competitions. The bike has B40 A/B type forks with QD spindle, though I dont have a…

I have a pair of Cub wheels fitted into my Panther trials bike.Amazingly the front wheel is the same sizes brake as was originally fitted back in the 30's.After spending a few hours stripping the wheels down to dry the drums and brakes after our very wet and swampy trial last weekend I noticed the front wheel bearings are a bit sloppy one side. can any one supply the bearing sizes so I can purchase some ready to fit after our next swampy trial. Cheers

  16. Hi need to replace the chain and sprockets on the James. Now it's been running on a 428 chain but i've seen some on a 520. Same with cubs now most people seem to run a 420 on the cub but it seems a bit light duty to me. So what does the panel think about chain sizes? i know sprockets are a personal choice but i was wondering what people are fitting to their Pre65 bikes. twinshock is easy as most of the factory details are pretty good anyway so stick with them but the Pre65 bikes are all so modified nowadays i was just wondering what you have fitted to your Cub, C15, B40, James, Bantam etc etc etc

Hi, My friend Walter bought a Tiger Cub 200 with the old (original) carb, which does not seem to run well. He would like to mount a new but Pre65 (Scottish) eligible carb, maybe an Amal 622. What do you recommend? Where can I order one already jetted for a 200cc Cub? Plus manifold. What about the heat protection, distance to the cylinder? Otherwise, what about a new Oko 22 flatsilde for clubtrials? Which jetting there? Thanks for some hints. Patrick from Switzerland

  18. Started by steve,

Hi, Are there any wheel builders out there who could help me put my mind at rest? In the top photo is my newly spoked hub which I belived to be Tiger cub. In the bottom photo is a spare wheel from another Tiger Cub I have highlighted two spokes on each wheel, as you can see the spokes leave the hubs in a different pattern on my new hub. (the spokes are almost at 180 deg. to each other) No matter how I try and respoke the wheel I can't match the pattern of my spare wheel. First I spoke the Large (brake side) flange taking care to keep the spokes of equal length, which should align the rim and hub perfectly. When I try to spoke the small flange the only way they will…
