Classic Trials

British bikes. What counts as being a Classic British trials bike? I regularly speak to people who ride Bantams fitted with Yamaha? pistons. Clutches that belong in Yamahas. Shocks and levers etc from China. Greeves bikes that were completely manufactured in the 21st century! How about a C15 with a Honda motor fitted? Or, an old C15 or Cub engine fitted into one of those brand new, light weight vintage style frames? Where do clubs draw the line for entries into Classic and/or "British" trials bikes classes? Any thoughts?

Hi trial-ites, I have a conundrum... I ride a 1986 TLR200 its in good nick and almost every time I pass the garage I'm in there fiddling with this or that, making it slowly better and better. It doesn't cost much to keep going, virtually nil on fuel or oil, and replacing consumables, bearings etc are what you'd expect to do on any bike. And there's no linkage bushes to maintain. So ok, its cheap to run, Its nice looking and goes well. Here's my problem. Nearly all my mates ride modern monos. I have a 230cc Tiger Cub motor with a Dellorto carb, Armac exhaust and PVL style (UPB) ignition. The slow running and mid range power is okay but on long climbs where it requires high revs it misfires very badly and often does not make it up the hill. I have spent the best part of a year trying to get the motor to run correctly but I am getting nowhere and going around in circles. I have asked many fellow Cub owners for help but it mystifies us all. I have checked and double checked the ignition timing which is spot on. Thanks for all the help with the kickstart trouble i had. The bike is a converted bsa bantam d7 I now have a new problem that has just started this week. After changing the piston rings i have been riding the bike quite a bit and loving it but... the bike now will run/tick over fine and all seems to be good for the first approx half hour of riding then all of a sudden the bike will just die, almost like it has run out of petrol, except that it hasn't. this started a few days ago. normally with the bike warm it will kickstart no problem however once the bike has died like i mentioned above it wont kickstart for a few hours until it has cooled down again. We are trying to judge if there are any other interested parties on here as its approaching 40 quid and fellow TC user Pitley wants it to wear on his Majesty. He will probably need a blonde wig as well, as like me time has not been kind to him where hair is concerned. (As a coot) He will be gutted if it goes for silly money.

Anybody here doing this trial this year? Myself and around 8 others from my VMCC section are doing it again. I'm on my 37 Panther.

Does anyone here know why when the Japanese started to produce bikes they chose to put the gear lever on the left instead of the right which was the norm on the Brit bikes at the time. I know it's not strictly a trials question as it covers road as well . Was there a reason for it I wonder ?? I will delete this topic if I can fathom it out. Thanks in advance. (I should know this but I can't remember)

How popular were these air cooled mono shocks back in their day? I had one in 2002, my first trials bike. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I`ve spent the last month looking for one and I`ve only found two for sale, one of them had half the engine missing and a seized crank. Are they/were they really that rare?

I am starting to plan our round of the Sammy Miller Classic Bike Championship and wondered if any riders had a view on how far the trial should ideally travel on the road. We can visit groups of sections used in the National Colmore Cup or even sections used in the 75 mile OK Supreme LDT, or anything in between. What distance is likely to attract the most classic entrants? Pete
