Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

Hi all, I'm looking to register my TY. I've contacted Yamaha, they cannot provide any details as the factory records no longer exist. They have suggested contacting an owners club to obtain age verification? I have emailed DVLA with details downloaded from web sites, to confirm age ranges, these are not acceptable to them as proof of age Does anyone have any ideas how I can get proof of age?

Hi, Does anybody have any experience of insuring a trials bike for a road trial for just one day? I have the chance to ride my fathers Enfield in a local road trial (in preparation for the Scottish Pre 65 - where there is the option to purchase road top up insurance with your entry fee). The bike is road reg'd and already insured for the road under my dads policy but obviously just for him. I have a full bike license so assume it should be quite possible, but just wondering if anybody has any experience of doing this and if so through which companies? Just phoned Carol nash to get quote for Beta Evo and they declined saying insurers dont like field/monkey bikes because they get stolen a lot. I thought thats why we insured them!; however has any body got best deal recently on TpF&theft insurance for EVo?

Anyone here insure their bike for on the road use and theft, if so who do you insure it with and what does it cost? Mines already road registered and currently SORN. Obviously I'm not looking to actually ride it around on the road but insurance would be handy for a bit of green laning or if it ever gets stolen from my garage.

Is there any insurance companies that I can insure a trials bike without a licence. It’s so I can apply for a log book. Cheers

Just picked up a 1976 Cota 250. It has the lighting kit and V5 and is currently on SORN. Its all original and needs a going over and general tidy up. Is there a recommended insurance company for these bikes please ? I am 58 years young and would prefer this on a separate policy to my other bikes. Thanks in advance.

Rightio, Typically I've left this all to the last minute I've finally passed my test today and am doing the Jack Wood trial on the 31st (road work involved). I've done a bit of research and people seem to be getting charged roughly £100-£200 for insurance and the general opinion is that msm seem to be best seeing as they have a propper trials bike policy. Now I got a quote from them for £210ish third party and £270ish third party fire and theft. I know that's more than others I have seen but I am only 19. So that sounds kind of reasonable at my age? Quick one and maybe a silly question ! Can the 125's be road registered, they don't seem to be any second hand road reg 125 bikes at all for sale. I know these are mainly for youth riders so probably no need to register but im just wondering if you can register them when bought new ? Cheers

Dear Anyone, Apologies if this has been covered before but I've searched the forum and been all over the MOT, DOT and DVLA web sites and can't get anything that gives a clear answer. I want to ride my 1983 Sherpa T on the road. its never ever been registered so I will have to get a V5. I only want to use it during daylight hours. I opnly want to use it for short "hops" between off road sections/lanes etc Registering the bike; As far as I can make out it is clearly a trials bike and thus its exempt from the ECWTA and SVA so I can register it with DVLA as exempt. Am thinking of getting a 125cc trails bike gas gas or a beta. The plan is for it to be road legal as I can ride on road to a spots to use it. Questions I have: A. What speed would a typical 125 be able to reach and sustain? B. How much damage would be caused to a engine, by using it on road? C. Would there be any gearing changes I could make, to make the bike a bit more road friendly. If I got a beta I would be after getting the long range tank and seat setup. Browsing this weeks MCN, mainly because somebody told me there was an article on the new Greeves and I came across THIS. Not good news at all if you ride a bike on the road (road legal trials as well). I lived in Germany for a couple of years and know only too well the grief the Germans have with TUV testing and type approval etc. We really don't want this coming to the UK............do we? GJ

So I would like to road reg my GasGas TXT 250. I have the V55/5 (I think it is) form the DVLA but I think there is more to it than that isn't there? I was wondering if anyone could detail the process and the cost involved, I've read some posts on it but some of those are a good few years old now and I know the Gov love to "update" how things are done for no reason. Hi everyone, I have a Montesa 247 reg PWV 31H purchased back end of 2016. The reg is not know to DVLA so I have to complete form V55 and also suggest completing a V765 and endorsed by the Owners Club to validate the information on the form. Can any help as to whom I can turn to in order to complete this form. I live in the Consett area in the North of England. The bike itself appears to have an interesting past originally purchased in 1969 by Stewart Wiggins and some association with the Laurence Telling who purchased Montesa 247 PWV48. Going to be getting an MOT for my '61 Tiger Cub. Is a stand required for the MOT? I've checked through the MOT manual and can't see anything that says a stand is a) a part that requires testing, or b ) is required to perform the wheel checks as this can be done through a visual inspection.

Good morning. I'm planning to go a bit further to a few trials this winter, and wondered how to get legal for the road between sections, rather than load the trailer up each time. I'm buying a new bike, so can register it and I have a full bike license. Questions: Is there any special registration catagory for a competition machine, or is it just like any other bike? Will I need a proper size number plate? How much is road tax for a 300cc machine - probably doing less than 100 miles a year? Where's a good place to get road insurance for a trials bike - I suppose 3rd party is all I need? Are there any legal exemptions to save all of the bother? Many thanks

Hi Chaps. I wonder if anyone can shed any light on my SORN situation? I've just bought a bike that was SORN'd by the previous owner. When we filled out the V5 for change of ownership I'm pretty certain that he ticked the 'currently SORN'd' box. My question is, do I need to do anything to keep it SORN'd (I'm not going to use it on the road)? And, how do I know that the DVLA will not fine me or do something else horrible to me if I've not filled out a SORN form as the new owner if that was what I'm supposed to do?? The DVLA website isn't that helpful in clarifying my situation, so hopefully collective knowledge/experience will be able to help me out?! Cheers, Ray

I have a slightly technical question regarding the rules for MOTs. My bike was first registered as new in May'07, and is currently taxed I think until June'10, after which I will have to go through the hassle of getting it MOT'd in order to tax it. Does anyone know if I SORN it now, and then re-tax it before it comes up to it's 3rd birthday, then the tax disc will run for another year before I have to get it MOT'd? (e.g if I re-tax in April'10, will run to April'11 when it will be nearly 4 years old?) Reason is I only plan to keep it about a year and I'm looking for the least hassle way to extend the taxed status a bit longer. Or. legally should a vehicle over 3 years old…
