Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Hi guys, i'm new to this site and to rebuilding/ building engines, Consequently this may be the first of many posts! My cub is a '61 with an oval head. I've done quite a bit of work to it with more enthusiasm than skill! I've started to put it back together and will be fitting a pvl ignition - purchased from Sammy Miller. I also purchases a case that had pillars machined by serco (?). My query relates to the distributor and i perhaps should have posted this query before i fitted the inner case! I'm assuming that the distributor on my model (sat on top of engine) is now redundant? Thinking this is didn't fit the clamp between the inner cases? What advise can an…

Any of you Pre65 ers have any problems with rear wheel Punctures and tyre coming of the rim I am approx 15st in gear. New rear tyre plus heavy tube there are two tyre clamps. I was riding on 5lbs approx hoping the 5 would keep the tyre on the rim, not a chance. The tube burst opposite valve.

Hi all, I was looking at the pictures of the swan neck cub frames fitted with strengthening top tubes that double up as the oil tank. Can the same ones be fitted to a b40/c15 ? If so where can i get one and what is the best way of fitting them or guess who fits them ? Also if you can fit a cub sub-frame to a BSA frame can you also fit an ARMAC one and maybe the swinging arm ?? Cheers Steve.

  4. Started by old bones,

My recently finished cub still has road gearbox internals with 13t drive and a large rear sprocket (cant remember how many teeth it has!) would the fitting of wide ratio parts be of much benefit bearing in mind that I am returning to trials after a long lay off so consider my self just above novice standard, are the parts available ? and a rough cost ? In conversation at a trial it was suggested that there was a way to achieve the lower gearing by fitting Bantam parts does anybody know if this is possible and what would be involved. Any advise gladly accepted

The alloy billet fork yokes that are sold by a number of people are usually available with steering stem parallel to the fork tubes or run out of usually around 1.5° I have basic knowledge of how trail is calculated but so many people have varied opinion on this so if you have tried both types what did you find, which option seemed the better?

Hi everyone, a little help please. Over the last year or so I have been putting together a Trifeild! Before I start building can anyone help with the forks. Not sure what I need, ie length which ones I can use for pre 65 trails. Can I get new yokes made in alumimium! I was looking at 35 mm forks or can I not use these. Just did not want to finish this and get the bike rejected my rule. Again info on the rear shocks would be great When I start building I will start to post build. Has anyone done one of these! All the best

Hy from Switzerland Pre 65, although not Trial (only the rider) My father Mark had to tidy up a room to make space for his grandson. He found a pic from about 1956, showing (Scottish 6 days winner)Gordon Jackson on a 500 cc AJS at an international Motocross in Regensdorf, Switzerland, where Mark was watching. The story was, that Gordon won in the last round, because he jumped over 2 hills in the last round instead of riding through the camel bucks like everybody did (and also the former leader till last round). Don't know if its true, but sounds like a legend, nice to believe in it. However, pic is nice and probably rare. Have fun. Patrick

  12. I’ve recently purchased a 1965 Tiger Cub. It’s been bored to 220cc. The previous owner has fitted a new Amal Premier carb 622 /301. 103 needle jet. 130 main. 19 pilot jet ( 2 rings on the jet ). slide 622 / 3.5 no numbers on the needle but two rings on the top, set at position 3 ( lowest ). The bike starts ok, ticks over fine but at a trial on Sunday it displayed all the features of fuel starvation mid section. In two sections she just stopped and wouldn’t start until I depressed the carb plunger as if starting from cold. Then fired into life. Strangely she was fine between sections, no hint of starvation. Baffled to say t…

What is legal for Cubs suspension wise? Can Ceriani / Betors be used and if so how late of styles? I am new and want to stay legal but see lots of Cubs with later model suspension. How loose is the "period mods" adhered to by AHRMA? Any advice welcomed. Same questions for aluminum rims, tanks, bars etc...Thanks, Ted

Hi I have a 1958 Cub with what I believe are the original hub, spindle, spacers into heavyweight forks. There is a gap that I'm questioning on the opposite side to the drum. Am I missing a spacer? Should the hub pull through further when I tighten the nut on the drum up? Or does it just have a gap!?

  17. Started by brucey,

O.k. I fitted the earlier 'R' Cam to my late engine, no problem. Replaced the primary drive chain and it now runs smooth and quiet. Made some parts to allow me to run the bike without the right hand outer cover on. This would allow me to spot any oil leaks from the gear lever shaft and outer cam bush. I also replaced the push rod tube top and bottom gaskets with new items. All is well apart from oil spewing out of the top of the push rod tube around the gasket. (see photo). I tried the thicker one when I assembled engine (without the push rods fitted) but it seemed to be holding the head off the barrel. I put a smear of sealant around the push rod …
