Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by arfur,

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a training center? I am new to trials and can find nowhere to practice so I have to enter trials to learn. After my first one I learnt so much and was confident and looking forward to the next. However when I got there the weather was rubbish and the sections were huge. I crashed on the first section I tried and then retired from the trial knowing I did not have the skills required for the conditions or difficulty of the sections. Even people I saw clear every section on my first trial where falling off!!! So I need to find some training so that I can restore my confidence and learn what to do properly. I live in Cambridgeshire but…

I rode to the edge of my property to do some trial riding to break up the monotony of practicing in my back yard and came across a couple of logs at a steep angle to the trail. There isn't enough room on the trail to hit them perpendicular. How do you cross them without kicking the rear end out from under you or stepping down to pivot turn over them?

Hi, I recently bought a 2009 gas gas 125, one of my friends also has the same bike. After riding a trial, I had a go on his bike which had much softer suspension, and was a lot easier to hop/endo, my suspension settings have not been changed. I was just wondering how to change my settings to be softer as the gas gas manual does not explain how to do it clearly? Many thanks, nick

Hey all, Right just a quick one. I trust my back brake no problem and body position going back is fine but whenever I get the front wheel up pretty high on slow wheelie I find myself falling off to one side. . . on the road bike I lean out to one side but never works too well. . . whats the best way of steering a slow wheelie or stop it falling to one side??? weight on pegs?

Has anyone got any tips on doing 360 wheelie turns on a trials bike? I can do a 180 by sticking my foot down and leaving the other one on the peg but I would like to do this with both feet on the pegs. What gear should I be using as well?

If your trying to move an old truck up a hill in the snow do you dump the clutch and gas it up? Trials is the same way, you need to learn the clutch it keeps you out of trouble and gets you traction. On hill climbs it keeps the front end from coming up keeps that back tire from spinning out and if you can't make it up the hill it becomes your brakes.

I had a weird experience today. I had to go down a very steep grade about 4/5m tall with a short run out and got a severe calf cramp trying to stay on the rear brake. I wonder how far above the peg is considered ideal? I may need to lower my pegs as my brake pedal can't go up any more. Thank you.

  15. Just getting in to trials after years of road riding, and am getting my first trials bike this weekend hopefully. Then getting a towbar and bike rack fitted next week and hoping to be off in Swaine Woods in Horsforth with the bike that Saturday. But I wondered if any of the Horsforth Trials Club guys on here would be interested in showing me some of the basic ropes and stuff up at Swaine Woods on the odd occasion so that I can try learn some stuff then go away and practice. Anyone interested?

Logs (for instance) that I wouldn't even think about on an uphill or flat strike terror into my heart when on a downhill. Any suggestions....aside from "stop being a girly-man"?

G'day all, One thing that has become apparent since doing some miles off-road (since last January) is my fitness, or more correctly the lack of it! I cruise many hours on my road bike but the trials bike has shown up some need for attention to fitness. This "trials caper" later in life needs some resolve to gain some fitness but not injure myself in the process! Hehehehehe I'm reasonably strong for age and weigh 87 kg at 178cms, but the aerobic fitness is lacking as shown by my arms and legs giving out before my concentration getting around the next obstacle. I have some past injuries from motocross when young.... like a collapsed disc in neck and bad vertebrae in low…

Hi all I have recently bought a trials bicycle to practise balance and improve my fitness. This will be a good laugh to anyone watching, as I'm old, fat and clueless! Still, got to start somewhere. Can anyone recommend any good videos/articles relating to bike trials. In particular, training and techniques. Thanks in advance
