I have a blue plastic Bultaco trials tank which I think is an original item as it is stamped 1979 underneath. However, it doesn't look very smart as it is very discoloured. Has anyone ever tried or had any luck in cleaning one of these tanks up and if so can you recommend a technique? otherwise I understand they are more or less impossible to paint as they are porous and the petrol vapour will lift the paint. I would like to fit it to the bike I am just finishing but it just looks a bit shabby.

While turning the countershaft on my 199 by hand it stops turning once every revolution. If I turn it harder it will rotate. The transmission works as it should although the shifting is a bit notchy. What is the cause the sticky countershaft?

Hello all, I have a Sherpa 350cc 183 (1976) that is in need of some attention as she’s not starting. Ive cleaned the carb and jets and replaced the spark plug, but realised here isn’t any sparks coming through. Ive take some pictures for you guys as I think it is wire fault which I can’t seem to bend my head around! There seems to be a cut off switch installed but I’m just not certain about the actual wiring in general so thought I would ask the specialists on here. If you need any more pictures or info then please do ask. Thank you in advance. Regards james

I plan on upgrading the stock 28 mm Bing T84 (the slide is badly worn and I'm told virtually impossible to replace) to a Mikuni 28 mm TM flat slide, VM 28, or VM 26 round slide. Does anyone have experience with any of these carbs on a 199A? Will the 26 mm work well or is it too small? I've been told that the smaller bore might boost low rpm performance. What jetting/needle combination works at 1500 - 2500 feet? Thanks! tightwoods

I have been thinking of getting one for ages now and after watching a few trials and deciding I am no where near fit enough and that it looks too hard I decided to get one anyway. The bike has been sitting for at least 15 years but I chucked some new fuel line and a fuel filter on it, a new plug and some fresh fuel and started kicking and kicking and phew kicking and sweating and it started - ran for a few seconds and died. Got my breath back and got the same. I am pretty chuffed so far and now need to strip and clean the carb for the next step - float bowl full of treacle but oddly doesnt smell as nasty as old fuel sludge normally smells The plan is to get it sorted m…

Now that the carb switch was complete with good results, a shakedown ride revealed another problem: The drive chain is rubbing the cases enough to mar them. The drive chain appears to be the correct size. I wondered if a thrust washer was missing behind the sprocket, but a schematic found on this site doesn't show one. I tried to pull the counter shaft in and out to check for some obvious play, but found none. I can come up with a washer of some kind without too much trouble, but I don't know if there are other issues that need addressed. Thoughts?

Hello ...... if you have a bit of free time it would be great to get some feed back on my chain jamming My Chain jammed full of clay, sand and started to jump and jammed with a small stone just at the right time to get a 5, some one spotted the stone and managed to get it out for me, the chain was sat almost on top of the teeth on the back sprocket and trying to do the same at the front. I readjusted the rear wheel so the chain was much slacker to try and give it space to clear its self which it did ( a tip a rider gave me on the day ) and then needed reajusting when enough of the mud had gone so that the chain was sitting right. because was now way too lose ,any way it…

Hello, my name is John and a first time poster. I've got an extensive post put will try to get to the point. I have purchased a 1968 sherpa T250(my first 2 stroke). Restored 2 years ago and has not been started in a year. I started the bike, fires up in 1 or 2 kicks, idles very well but as you come off the idle circuit it begins to miss(not backfiring) and misses through all throttle ranges. I have checked the amal carb and everything appears fine, good pilot jet and circiut, needle jet good(.106),needle good no grooves or wear, main jet good,no air leaks, slide is snug. Float is set at .080" below top of float bowl. I have several Triumphs, BSA's,Ariels,Matchless so I ha…

Hi all, I cannot squeeze any spark out of my newly purchased Mod 199 350 Coil, condenser and points are new and set correctly At first I suspected a short to ground but after two days if thinking and tinkering it seems my flywheel isn’t sufficiently magnetic any more. Even when turning the crank with the electric drill I only get 3 V AC out of the magneto Any ideas what else could be wrong and how to overcome or test that further? Raoul

Hi, I keep hearing about having the exhaust packing done properly on the middle and back box - it is in fact mentioned in Don Morleys book, and how it can affect performance but I cant seem to find a definitive answer on what is correct. So..can anyone confirm? Is it supposed to be very tightly packed or is looser packing better? many thanks Stu

Hi guys, first post here - my name is Chris, and I've been playing with trials bikes for about a year. I've just acquired a Sherpa, model 199 (possibly year 1979? - engine and frame numbers match, but can't remember anything else) which I'm in the process of rebuilding as a winter project. Not going for a show winner, but a good useable twinshock that I won't mind getting dirty. Seem to have 90% of the original parts, give or take what I bin/ruin, and is all going to plan so far, but I could use some advice on a few wee problems (and there will probably be more as I go...) I've just had inserts machined and brazed on to correct oval-ed holes for the swing arm pin, and ha…

I have read that one of the things that they did to help keep the factory bikes in top tune was to keep the silencer properly packed.I don,t see any way to do this unless it was cut open.Is that what they did? I haven,t had mine off the bike yet,but I,m guessing they are talking about the end silencer/exhaust piece and I,m just curious how to repack it if thats possible or even necessary?

The offset pivot arrangement for the brake shoes in both wheels of my M198 had me wondering if there were brake shoes from a different bike that would fit and not have the offset pivots. I'm trying to maximise the performance of the brakes by avoiding the eccentric loading against the drum that the standard bultaco pivot arrangement creates. I have looked in the EBC catalogue and there were a few alternatives that looked like possibilities. Fantic 240 shoes appeared the closest in the catalogue. They are for the same diameter drum and are the same width shoe and use a standard pivot arrangement. I know I can have the existing shoes modified by welding and machining then…
