Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

All things related to the legalities and requirements in the UK

  1. Started by mquatrello,

If your close to warrington cheshire Princess St Garage easily found on google or yell. Just the one guy does the bike mot's and understands what we use them for. No drama MOT very stress free. Of course bike was mechanically perfect but no dramas with no lights etc. Just a battery powered mega horn and a large number plate. Dont forget the little reflector needed on the number plate, a i would recommend wizzing off the "not for road use" if its on your tyres. Simple

Has anyone had trouble getting insurance for an 2010 Evo. Ebike my normal insurer will not quote and Carole Nash only have a 250 Rev 3 on the pull down menu. I have tried the bikeinsurer but all still refer to a rev 3? Any guidance would be appreciated as I need to get a cover note to register and tax the new beaut before pickup on Saturday.

Hi Having ridden trials a few years ago, then moving into mx/Enduro, I am now looking at another trials bike for practicing and entering some events. I want it to be road reg'd and able to ride down the lane to a practice area near me as well as for events that require it. I have found a nice looking example of a 250 sherco, but the owner says it doesn't come with a V5. Initially alarm bells rang- but having looked through the forum posts, it looks like I can still register the bike etc. question is, is this worth the extra hassle without a V5- would you buy a bike without this document? Thanks for any advice. Mil

I'm looking for a horn that will pass an mot. I ordered what I thought would be sufficient off tinterweb but it was rejected as it wasn't a single tone constant. Can anyone recommend a particular one to get as opposed to just suggesting a battery powered horn.

I have put my restored matching numbers 198A. It has not got a V5 and a prospective buyer has asked if it could be registered? Thanks in Advance

I'm trying to insure my 2 bikes, and it's proving an epic. Despite getting quotes from recommended insurers (Carole Nash, Bennets, Performance Direct), it appears that when you get into the T&Cs or definitions of the policies, they either do not cover 'Trials', any road use, or competitions. So, how do people cover their bikes for off road use, with some on road transiting between sections, and for use in trials competitions? Or are people being 'artistic' with the truth?

  8. Hi all, Can anyone recommend a good mechanic locally in West Yorkshire that can have a look at my sherco? It's running lean & is a sod to keep the revs down. I've stripped the carb & cleaned everything & put it back together but it needs fettling. It doesn't want to play ball & i want to go riding. Cheers Si

Hi how much of the v55/5 do you have to fill out? Surely you don't have to fill in emissions/co2/noise decibels etc? Many thanks

I am thinking of buying an old air-cooled mono that has been restored, and whilst doing this a replacementengine was fitted. This means that the frame number matches the one on the log book but the engine number doesn't. The bike is registered to the correct address and I know it's not stolen. It is not currentl taxed or mot'd but I would want to get it back on the road for road trials. What imPlications would it have if any? Would anyone other than me ever even know?

  13. Hi all, New to the sport and the site but hoping to have my own bike by mid Jan, so been doing my homework on vans and now looking at insurance for the bike! I'm having issues trying to get quotes to cover the bike as I don't have a bike licence and wasn't planning on getting one either. Can anyone on here that doesn't have a bike licence and has a non registered bike let me know what you do for insurance? I'm looking for cover while stored at home and during travel to trials sites/events. P.S. Will pop on the new member section when I have the bike to say hi! Cheers Alex

Just collected new EVO 200 2010 ha ha! dead chuffed.......Can anybody reccomend good (including best price) insurer to get road tax who might just recognise Make model etc. Just spoke to my current insurer (... broker called Aquote.. who had previosly insured my rev3 200 who in turn put the bis with Norwich Union..fully comp 85 quid last year I am ancient!....) They went through usual stuff called the underwriters etc who came up with 165 quid and a lot of huffing about racing off road use etc. So is ther somebody out ther who wants to insure my bike against theft from most secure garage ever and maybe 500 miles a year at top speed of say 60 mph?

Just to let people know that dvla have changed the v55/5 forms in September they still send out the old ones though! I have had mine rejected just because it's the old form which I only received from them 4 weeks ago. if you print one off online and fill it in identical to the old one it will be fine (dvla told me) so make sure you don't fill out any old ones old ones have the carbon part on the back!

Evening all. In an attempt to make my Sherco 100% road legal I have fitted a speedo to keep Mr and Mrs Plod happy. It's just one of those mountain bike ones from that ever popular auction site - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIGITAL-CYCLE-MOUNTAIN-RACER-BIKE-DIGITAL-WIRELESS-SPEEDO-COMPUTER-SPEEDOMETER-/290960376715?pt=UK_SportGoods_CyclAcces_RL&hash=item43be97038b#ht_2800wt_1141 Has anyone else fitted one of these? It does work, after a little modification to the little magnet...motorbike spokes are a little bigger than mountain bike ones...but it does read a little erractic. There is a chart to allow you to insert a code based on the wheel size. This chart doesn't…
