Montesa

  1. Started by barfy,

A few months ago I broke the switch for my twin-map throttle body, so I took the opportunity to make a switch like the one on http://montesa4rt.nl. I fitted it for a trial today, but I couldn't tell the difference from one map to the other in the same way I thought I could before. I know that the switch is working ok. Is there a way to tell what map is selected on the throttle body?

Hi, What do you think of the above as a first bike for a 13st adult compared to a Sherco 250 2004 or a 99 Cota 315 RX? Are the R and RX the same bike? Any known faults to look for? Thanks,

Hello friends, this turned up locally as a barn find. Ad says its all original, hasn't run since late 70s but turns over, original docs, manual, tool kit etc. He wants $1k for it (obo)... Is it worth investigating further? with a TY resto i attempted, parts were plentiful online and i wonder if this is the case for a euro 70s bike too or if it would be more of a headache than its worth. - isnt there a montesa with a wierd size front wheel that you cant get any more? is that this bike? How does it look to you Montesa experts? And..is the 123 as sound an investment as the 247 or 349- or does none of that matter? Any advice appreciated from a novice! with…

  9. Hi folks, My local dealer (just 900km away) has a good price on the S3 titanium header pipe for the 4RT. But there appears to be little information available so I have a few questions for anyone who has actually fitted one. 1. Does anyone know what diameter they are? The original pipe measures 25.4mm OD. 2. Does the original heat shield fit this pipe? 3. Assuming the pipe is a larger diameter, how does it fit into the existing muffler? The original fibre sealing ring would be too small so how does one seal this joint? 4. The original pipe has a slight bend before entering the muffler, the S3 pipe appears to be straight. Do they fit properly? Do they hang further…

Hi guys. I’m looking to buy a 4 ride next year with a budget for a 2 or 3 year old one. What are your thoughts on them for reliability & rideability & general info . I’ve heard people say the gear shift is too far away but not sure if this is true. With thanks Andy Cheers guys

Suppose I've been lucky really as my 2014 4rt has only just required its fork seals replacing. I have changed the oil before but just drained and refilled with the "required" amount less a tad for the oil that could not be drained. So whilst stripping the full leg down to replace the seals and cleaning each part before replacing I thought I would rebuild the correct way by using the measurement of the oil level rather than the amount. Left "Spring" leg fine 410ml which = 100mm, Right leg to my surprise took 30ml less than the recommended 400ml to achieve 50mm depth. So what should I go with, the level or the amount ?

It's time for me to change the oil in my 4RT for the first time (okay, it's overdue). I was hoping to be able to get to the oil filter without removing the skid plate (gee, I expect so much), but that appears to be impossible. The last time I pulled a skid plate off a trials bike was on my Aprilia TXR312M. Getting it back on was a mission so close to impossible that I had to call in Tom Cruise. He brought lots of vice grips and various other tools. I got it back on, but it was not a pleasure. So, if I pull the skid plate on my '07 4RT, how easy will it be to reinstall?

  14. Hi all, I'm in the process of restoring a Cota 200, starting first with splitting the crankcase to replace main bearings. After removal of cylinder head & barrel, I've noticed there's some light scoring on the bore and piston skirts. Anyone know the best place to get a rebore/piston kit done in the UK? Much appreciated!

Hello new boy here (and to trials) and am looking at buying one of two apparently 2001 models. However, one has a black (above the swing arm) rear brake caliper and the other appears to be in line behind the swing arm. Could anyone suggest which might be the later of the two models and I'm assuming the preferred bike, given the condition and price are very similar? Thanks in advance.... hopefully my first of many questions!! Cheers riz

Howdy - I'm in a bit of a bind, though not a bad one to be in. Short form: I bought a 2005 Monty 4RT from a friend, and I loved it but didn't ride it enough. Tried to sell it, was going to get a crappy price for it, so my finacee ended up buying it on a bit of a lark. She hadn't ridden trials before, but now is totally into it, the backyard is a trials course, and ... you guessed it, now I'm in the market for another trials bike. So I am obviously leaning towards finding a good deal on a used 4RT (and am even playing with getting a new one up in Canada), but I was trying to get a sense of the other 4-strokes that have popped up since I got the Monty originally. Bet…

Hi I have 4RT 2008 bike and been very very happy with it. Im a club rider with 3+ years of experience. 4RT suites me absolutely perfectly, but sometimes I find it lacking power. This particularly doesnt mean that it wouldnt have enough power, but as my wrists are very tight (I cant for example turn the handlebar from 0-max with one turn), its difficult to turn the gasbar fast/far enought to get the max power out instantly. Since some weeks now, Ive tried to get rid of this problem by turning the gashandle with the front brake leveller downwards and adjusted the bar itself more frontwards to get less wrist angle. These are helping, but still I wonder if there is something…

Hi all: I also have a question regarding possible piston slap that I hope someone here can help me with. I have a 98 Montesa 315r purchased late in 2010. The bike runs perfect and has plenty of power for me, however at tick-over there is a noticable slight rattle which of course dissapears when the revs increase. I have read elswhere in these forums that some people say this is normal and okay, and other say replace the piston etc. I have removed the front exhaust pipe and when i stick my finger on the piston through the port it feels like I can move (rotate)it slightly from side to side, almost like it has a little play on the bearing. Does anyone know if the top end b…
