  1. USD forks has been done before but there were problems with the mudgaurd stay arrangement whick meant there was too much flex in the front end. I was amazed there wasnt more damage to the forks but i dont recall a great number getting trashed.
  2. Has a deal been done with Sherco to use the motor ? I dont get why Sherco take Xispa to court but not Greeves. With hindsight it looks like neither party represent much of a threat to Sherco but i dont understand why Sherco let Greeves launch the bike. Its obviously a Sherco copy engine despite what Greeves say.
  3. send a message to rayc through the forums his son John runs trials schools at various locations in the NE.
  4. have tried them before, lasted about two months, during the summer. get a known brand and i can normally get 6 month out of them, SKF esp good but expensive
  5. I didnt have a problem downhill when the 300 valve was in my Gas Gas but the sherco did run rich dropping down the hills in the ssdt with the bigger valve fitted. Might have just wanted the float tweaking due to the bigger holes in the 300 valve but thats probably the only trial with such long descents so i'm tempted to leave it. Even with the 300 valve it did run lean on the road after a while but the 290s didnt seem to have that problem, the 290 comes with the VHST carb rather than the PHBL. Again though its not going to be a problem in 99% of trials. I have a keihin in the garage so might try that anyway just to see what its like.
  6. Hey Wayne I have ben to KSC twice, as a rug rat and then as an adult (well not really an adult but at least 30 years old). I loved it both times but the Mrs got bored as did the teenager last time I went. So next year for a TC summer holiday we'll all go to the states apend as long as we want at KSC then go to Copeys ! TC Bash on the Ben could go international , all wee need is a US WTC round. MINT !
  7. fitted a 300 float valve to my 250 copey, a 250 flost valve is what it came with. As I had a 300 from a previous bike I just fitted it anyway. other problem is the std fuel filter is rubbish, the one between the tank and the fuel pump, so i would change that as well if I was you.
  8. also if you fit Ti footrest brackets you will bend the frame rather than the footrest bracket. Seen a couple of people break the frames in that area.
  9. erm no not really an air cooled yam mono will have a number of problems at a pre 65 trial I would think..... or are you kidding ?
  10. unfortunately for Pidcocks he is going to prove of the long standing truths in trials. A good rider can make any bike look good. I of course will be demonstrating the opposite, a bad rider cant make a good bike look good......
  11. yes you can get the team gear from MRS it made by Clice, Jisie are doing some cabestany replica stuff but its not out for a couple of months yet.
  12. something doesnt sound right here. Boyesen Reeds tend to make the bike run lean on the pilot, so on my 07 290 when I fitted them i had to go up a size on the pilot jet. So your bike Chewy should, all other things being equal, be running weaker than mine with std reeds. I have a 36 pilot at 2.5 turns out and your running 35 at 1.5 with the boyesen reeds? why is your bike not pinking ?
  13. Copey me thinks you have a somewhat hotter / drier climate than the UK as you will discover shortly at the ssdt...... 36 pilot and the mixture screw is 2.5 turns out, think thats about in the middle. If I go to a 38 then the bike will be too rich on a damp day at my favourite event ! Damp days are fairly common at this particular trial
  14. or ring wayne sherco 290 for sale, not used for last 3 years due spending all my time on the web !! If hes getting arm pump its the beginning of the end..... I have been trying for ten years to balance my bike on the back wheel intentionally and failed. El Maestro changes gear balanced on the back wheel balanced on a rock. I HATE HIM!!!!!!
  15. My 2011 250 came with a 35 pilot jet but the mixture screw was 4 turns out to stop it pinking so I have fitted a 36 which means I have a bit more adjustment left. I think this helps as its got more off the bottom now its not too weak. other things you could try are Boysen Reeds as they helped smooth my 290 a few years ago and are not too expensive, get the, from motomerlin assuming the design hasnt changed. first thing to do though is retard the timing as it costs nothing and can be changed back if you dont like it. I havent retarded mine as my last bike was a 300 Gasser so i'm very happy with the 250 as is but it may help you.
  16. I used MSM for my new bike insurance and it was as Scoobydo described. I find MSM good to deal with and its a proper trial policy so you are covered if you have a bump during a trial. spot on !
  17. I'd push it, its their responsibility to know what it is they are actually selling.
  18. Ditch two of your three tyre levers and the gloves and jacket. trials tyres are easy to fit, to remove you can use the end of a spanner and one tyre lever, remember you will only be removing a front tyre on the course if its punctures already so dont worry about the tube. You only need one tyre lever to refit a tyre, you can stop it sliding with your knees. Spare gloves might seem like a good idea but if its raining proper ssdt rain its pointless as by the time you put them on they will be as wet as the ones you have just taken off Finally dont ever leave the parc ferme without wearing your jacket, the weather changes fast so I would wear it rather than carry it.

    Grip !

Grip is affected by a number of variables on a bike these days you can get lots of aftermarket products like footrests and bar clamps which can be higher/lower/further back/further forward than std. Then the owner of any bike can adjust suspension, carb jetting, ignition timing, bar position, lever position etc. all of these things can effect grip as they effect how you stand on the bike or how the power is delivered compared to you twisting the throttle. Its very difficult to compare two bikes as no two bikes are the same. if you find it hard to get grip with focus on standing further back and being smoother with the throttle. Fit a slow throttle if it doesnt have one already then come back and we can all chip in with other things to change if you wish.
  20. yes I've added an in line petrol tap to mine so I can turn the petrol off when I clean the carb. cost a
  21. I think it is Bernies old bike you can tell by the factory lightweight rear mudguard !
  22. so Map 2 is only the softest, as in less power per rpm on two of the 3 maps but the change is probably marginal looking at the graph until you get way beyond what I'll ever rev it to. Chris do you know which of the 3 applies to the 2011 bike out of interest ? its a good point though Chewy, why not change it at 3000 rpm, I doubt cabestany ever gets to 10,000 never mind Joe Public.
  23. Hi folks have searched the sherco forum and found contradictory answers to this question. On the 2011 sherco which setting advances the timing map 1 or 2 ? its still a relatively new bike so i dont want to rev to a few thou rpm to test myself and its not in the manual. cheers
  24. Good engine in those bikes. Ignition timing can be adjusted by fitting a different chip under the seat, blue is std grey is advanced from memory. Not sure if you can adjust the timing at the stator as I never took the flywheel off mine. I used fuel mix of 50 to 1 but oil is a bit better now so you may get away with 60 or 70 to 1. enjoy
  25. This is just theory but in my 280 and 300 pros I fitted a 1mm base gasket as this more reliable and calms down the power delivery, even going 0.8 to 1mm you can tell the difference. 1mm is more reliable as the bikes often come with a 0.5mm base gasket which the bigger engines can blow at the edge of the cutaway for the transfer port. Now I suspect that 2.4mm of base gasket is way to much and i'm wondering if this also has the effect of making the engine run hotter as you should have more unburnt fuel. As the combustion area at TDC is now compartively much bigger the fuel wont be as compressed when it ignites perhaps leaving more unburnt? retarding the timing also makes an engine run hotter. The combination of these two may well be your issue. A 300 is quick but I found with mine that it was actually harder to ride with a low compression head insert. So you may find a 1mm gasket, slow throttle and a flywheel weight gets you there. Lots of VERY good riders run a flywheel weight and my theory was if they need one I'm only kidding myself if I think I dont. Let us know how you get on.
