You'll have to splain that to me Cope, went over my head
-
Looking through the results,
Good job to Max Malsbary, 2nd only to Ray Peters in expert on the 4 stroke Scorpa!
Suprising 125 result, not suprised Colton won just how much he won by.Nice job Colton.
-
My '97 had a steel kick start lever. I imagine the shaft is the same size.
-
That looks like somthing a teenage motocrosser would do
How comes I've never seen none of thems?
-
Well there's one way it's worlds better than a Montesa. Takes about half an hour to change the oil and filter on the Montesa:D
-
What I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is that Colton has only been riding trials for 2 years!! and this was only his second national.
Knowing what Andrew can do and seeing what Colton could do on my last couple trips up north I figured they would be close. I have only seen Ronnie at the Youth Nationals, but from what I had seen I knew he would be in there too. I am not at all surprised by the results. Three good kids battling it out Good luck to them all for the rest of the season.

Complicated electronics? How complicated is it to just kick the bike and go? It is more complicated to get a bike jetted properly, then do it again when you go up in altitude. After 2 1/2 years still don't know of anybody who has had to worry about electronics.
As for the other bikes I hope to try the Beta and Scorpa next month. I'm sure if the Beta handles like a Rev3 with a four stroke motor which it should, I will like it. I just hope I don't like it too much As for the Scorpa I have know idea what to expect, but I have a totally open mind about it.

Heck Alan, I thought cabin 5 was your house
Cope, if you have heard Mich is going then you know more than me. I haven't seen or heard from him since last Sept.. I will keep the camera ready for any strange things that may happen. Unfortunately I missed the live action between Alan and Mich last year
and I don't want to play spin the bottle with anybody on here either
-
The Demo props are Bill Markham's, the trailer is a old flat bed trailer I had that now carries and stores Bill's props at my house.
This is one way we use the big spools.

It is a private school, I'm sure that helped.
The best advice I can give is let him ride with other kids. I know when Ty got his Rev 80 for his seventh birthday he was pretty exited to get it and ride it, but he wasn't doing half the stuff that he was on his Gas Gas 50, he just lacked the confidence of the bigger bike and the harder I pushed him do to something the more he refused. Well he then went riding with two older boys that he looked up to for about an hour and he came back a different rider, he then had total confidence in himself and his bike. I don't know what went on but it was something I couldn't do.

My 8 year old son Ty got to do what many of us have been wanting to do for years, he got to ride his motorcycle in the school playground! He had been telling us that he wanted to do a Demo at school for a while and we thought they would never go for it, but one day my wife mentioned it to the Principal and she thought it was a great idea!
I wasn't sure how it would go. Would the kids get trials? Could an 8 year old do anything to impress them? Where they going to think "this is stupid"? Well as soon as he started the bike the kids where "oohing & aahhing" so I knew it would go pretty well.
He did some balancing
Then he rode over some obstacles and then a wannabe splatter onto the trailer
He then did a wheelie and the kids went nuts! I guess they don't get trials, but they like it
He then did many wheelies until one kid asked if he could do donuts? In the loose play ground dirt donuts where easy and with all the dirt blowing the kids loved it! (no picture)
Everybody seemed to like it, even the old Teachers! The Principal thought we should make it a annual event. After we let the kids sit on the bikes. The best question though was the little girl that asked if he could do a back flip
sorry not good pictures

I had the V-Mar on my Beta and now on my Montesa, they are awesome but they don't make them for the USD forks
-
Those are the only two issues I have had. I tighten and lock tight the kick starter after every ride. On our '05 after the radiator started leaking around the mount they sent me a updated version that the upper mount is on the right front corner instead of the back left corner.
For what it is IMO the REV 80 is one of the best trials bikes made.
I have also put on a 4 piston front brake caliper like the big bikes so little hands don't have to squeeze as hard.

Info update,
The Thumper racing kit after testing has down graded to a 272cc because the head would not flow for a 290cc. It is being built for U.S. Montesa.
Since my bike already has about every available option I figured why not get a big bore for it. I got the Mitani 260cc kit that is now available from LewisportUsa which includes a two stage programmable ECU as well as a cam, barrel and piston. It is built to the same specs as the HRC kit. The piston is a two ring design (stock is three ring) and has a different done shape.
The first thing I noticed was the bike defiantly had more snap. After riding a two day trial on it and then a little more at home it will also grunt down at lower RPM's so you can use a higher gear in tighter situations and then still have the snap when you need it. I also let a lower class rider try it on the softer setting and he really liked how it worked in the slow rpm situations. With this kit that has the two stage mapping it works well from novice to expert

Renthal application chart
-
Oh man that makes me feel bad, I am always going for the higher bars or the spacers under my fat bars. Of course my front wheel spends most of the time on the ground
As far as bar height and rider height I always thought it was strange that the Lampkin bend Renthals are lower than the Fuji bend Renthals.

Steve,
If your son actually listens then you are worlds ahead!! Sometimes when walking a section with my son I'm surprised he can find the exit gate he pays so little attention to me. Ya your son will be line two, we don't have any in that class from California. My son will be line 3 and we will have one in 13 & under (line 1) and two in the zero line. Your son will be in the same class as Alan Bechard's son (where has Alan been hiding?)
As far as beer goes I only drink maybe three or four a year. I don't think I have drank any yet this year so if I hold out until July maybe I will have two with you.....are you coming with any good Canadian brews?
Hensely,
Your riding area looks nice, a lot different than what we have around here! We have to travel north for trees. That's one of the things that bit my son last year at the TTC, he is used to turning around rocks and such where he has to watch his pegs, when he had to make tight turns around trees where he had to watch to not hit his bars he was out of his element.
I haven't seen Lane since our round 1 event in September so I have know idea what he is doing. As far as Sandavol from what I understand second hand is they are riding all the regular nationals and skipping the youth. I think there should still be good completion though, with the new classes Chase Harker will be in there, plus you have Bo Ibsen & Ian Delaney from out here in Ca. has made big gains this last year and you never know somebody we don't know could show up and kick butt or another kid could have just come on fire since last year! I expect it to be close again this year.
I forget aren't the Dennis' from Missouri? or was that some other "M" state back there? To us way out here in California all those little states back there blend together. The Dennis' seem like nice folk and there kids are good riders so there's three for the Missouri team.
No Jive,
Got your check yesterday, thank you very much!
-
If I did something like that then I would never get into the trials hall of fame. Of course if there ever was one I wouldn't be there anyways. Besides betting on the kids sounds like something Lane would do(my team is better than yours stuff) Then you say all proceeds go to the winning team, I'm all for helping the kids even if it is Texas kids! The problem for me is if all the kids do well we can only win a maximum of three! Two of our four kids are in the same class and I'm sure there is more Mizell's riding than that. Can we count former California riders? There's one in Kentucky that could help our odds a bunch. With the new rules for the classes(which I like even though it makes it less likely for my kid to win) that would still leave us with a possible of three. Oh what the heck, I'm good with it as long as nobody on either side starts talking smack
-
I didn't think you where trying to be negative, I was hoping my response didn't come off negative either.
As far as the AMA banquet, all the class champions get to go up on stage and get their medallion. It's only the overall youth winner that gets to make a speech, as does the top male rider (Geoff Aaron) and the top female rider (Louise Forsely). All the kids got to go up on stage at the same time and stand behind Geoff as he talks, any adult champions from the national series that come get to do it too, it's really a lot of fun! I will admit though if the banquet was on the East Coast I'm sure we would skip it, we are only 3 1/2 hours from Vegas.
Sorry we can't spare any riders, are team is down by six riders this year! Two due to expense, one moved away, one is too old, one doing all the regular nationals and skipping the youth, and who knows what Leavitt is doing. Where are you at in Missouri? my wife has family there and wants to visit them on the way home, whats a few 100 extra miles
Oh and last you are 100% right, the TTC has fantastic youth event, that's why we make the trip In fact my two oldest kids have so much fun they want to move to Tennessee when they get older.
-
Cope, I had written something fun about how he is anything but tough, but my wife made me delete it
No Jive, I'm coming up to Oroville this weekend. I'll stick one of the hot dogs next to the turbo on my truck on the way up so it will be nice and toasty when I get there You should have sent it before the raffle, you could have won something cool like a old trials movie.
Hensley, I'm not quite sure how to take your post so I hope I don't come off wrong.
Well, the money we get this year per rider should pay for the fuel to get us there. Obviously that is a huge help, but taking a family of five across the country and being gone for two weeks it doesn't start to cover it. Just to let you know our "regionally located event" is in Donner and that is as far away from me as the TTC is to you. In fact you are closer to Donner than I am to the TTC, so if we both went to both events you will have traveled less than me. The trials I'm going to this weekend is about 500 miles away! How about a North Western rider? Chad Redman has gone to both events the last two maybe three years and he is from Washington. That's the way it is now with the TTC being the eastern round, so if Homer & Ty win this year we can just party at the AMA banquet in Las Vegas this year

It always cracks me up when I read people saying this. Of course practicing more would help more than any trick part, but who rides at 8 or 9 P.M. on the week days? (that's when I do most of my bike work) I have never missed a weekend of riding to put on some trick part or spent the money on that part instead of attending a trials school. As somebody who has probably one of the most modified trials bikes there is, that's part of the enjoyment I get out of trials..... messing with my bike in the evenings when I can't ride. It makes trials last all week and not just on the weekends.
As far as Sherco's go, on my '06 290 once I put a 9 tooth counter shaft sprocket on and taller bars I was able to ride it to my full ability instead of riding it worse than my 03' Beta, seems like a good use of my time and money to me
-
We had our little fun fund raiser trials and raffle this weekend......68 riders! Our club supported the kids big time! Many donated much more than the standard entry fee! A big thank you goes out to any and all ATA members who donated.
At our little trial we even had #2 in the Nation Cody Webb
We also had Kerry Aaron riding and her husband hanging out. There was also a guy riding a XR 50 who I saw later in the results was Nick Mantzoros.
Of course the real story is how much all the local riders supported the kids, over 3,500 for the event and a little over 5,000 for the year!!
This years team is
Andrew Oldar-15
Eric Storz-14
Ian Delaney-13
Ty Cullins-8
For the other states or clubs I encourage you to start something like this, trials people are great and know how tuff it is to make long hauls and are willing to help out if given the chance!

Well I don't know who Dicko is or what his take is. As a guy who recently got one (4rt) here is my take. First I really like my bike, but I don't think it is any better or worse than any of the new good 2t's, just different. It does some things better and some worse than a 2t. I love the fuel injection and the technology in the bike.
Unfortunately I see in the future do to regulations we will all have to be on four strokes. It will go the same way as the MX bikes where the manufactures continue to develop the 4 strokes and stop developing the 2 strokes so the 2t's get no better and the 4t's continue to develop and get better. I'm sure we will never see a new 2t trials motor.
I like 2 strokes and after having a 4 stroke for a few years I'm sure I would like a 2 stroke again. I have a 06' RM 250 that I plan on keeping because I know 2 stroke motocross development has stopped and it is as good as a 2 stroke will be, I see trials being there in about three years from that and that will be sad
As for 50% of the bikes being 4 strokes by 07, If you take into account all the riders over 30 years old here in Southern California it is probably close to 50%. In fact there are four sets of us that the Dads have 4rt's and the kids have Beta 80's, one of them being former national champ Scott Head and his son William.
-
Thanks Ron, that is much appreciated.
Ya, I am hoping to have the kids make most of the sections, knowing the kids though I'm sure I'll have to tone down the sections a little. I also plan on sitting back and letting my eight year old design a section by himself....should be interesting

When I looked in here I didn't think it would get to Cowgirls. Well, I spent most of my teenage years showing horses for the girls (that's why I don't ride a bike better) It was something like a 30 to 1 ratio of girls to boys so I had fun. All my girlfriends showed horses and that's how I met my wife. The nice thing about a girl that showed was she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and work hard and yet she had to get all prettied up to go into the show ring, it's like the best of both worlds At our shows we did both english and western and I will admit I enjoyed the sights a little more in the morning english classes. I got distracted a few times while in the ring following some cutie while she was posting.
BTW that's the worst picture of Terry Clark I have ever seen!
