  1. Also trials at the top of the sport is not competitive anymore. Sure they all try hard. But it is a battle for third and fourth place only. Which is very boring.
  2. Well are you sure you are burning transmission oil? Of course it is old enough to do this. But we have several of these around that are still original engine wise. I assume you know parts are getting very hard to find.
  3. Yeah, we get that. Montesa numbers were confusing enough in the current year let alone 40 years ago. That is a great looking machine, but in 1980 all Montesa`s had the unique sub frame. But who knows as many things happen through the years with mix matched parts. Good luck on the shifting mechanism as they are a pain.
  4. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montesa_Cota_349_1980_Ulf_Karlson_a.JPG Your bikes at least an `83, a picture says a thousand words.
  5. Actually if you have it as straight as possible and it does not rub the cases, the halves will balance themselves out. Welding them and they cannot self correct. But what do I know, I learned it from an old flat tracker. Never had an issue as long as you are patient.
  6. By the way your bike looks more like an 84 or 85.
  7. Actually you got it from my posts, Dan prefers to waste hours polishing.
  8. I loved my`96, especially since a guy traded me a 60 day old bike for my `95. I got a current bike just cuz he thought it was pumpkin colors. Oh, my `92 was one of the favorite bikes through the years. But it did have a complete WES tail pipe which killed some of the color.
  9. We never lost riding areas. Just 4 events have been canceled locally so far. I have not ridden other than home. No reason to risk a chance encounter along the way.
  10. The "96 was a great bike. During the 90" s nose wheelies were the way to turn. THE '96 was also the ugliest Beta color scheme ever. Enjoy the bike.
  11. You have to get all the air out by pumping the rod.
  12. By the way, pre entry for the 2020 UTE CUP started on 5/1/2020.
  13. Well, it`s better to cut it too long and cut again. When a chain is cut it is actually a link and a half.
  14. The tensioner won`t be the problem. The counter shaft can be a hard one. My old 348 took a lot of heat before it popped off.
  15. Yeah the 2002 cases were just a tad smaller.
  16. You get them from the same place.
  17. I will be getting the stock air box. I was the trials master at our February event. While Iwas just minding my business busy at the scoring table an older gentleman walked up to me and asked if he could show a bike. 5 minutes later he pushes up the 348 and a few minutes later it was mine. The bike had belonged to his neighbor most of it`s life. He was a Harley builder and for sake of ease tossed the air box and put on the cheap filter. If I keep her she will spend the rest of her days a trophy Queen in my office with all the wall junk I have from 50 years of competition. By the way 294 miles on her and not a scratch on the frame.
  18. No matter what, you need to pull the cover off and take a look.
  19. Well , just order the shims. It`s a 15 minute job.
  20. All the 348`s were 51m. Here is my 1978.
  21. The 1985 had drum brakes. You need to check the linkage for a broken bolt.
  22. Cases, pipe, forks, handle bar mounts adjustable. Could have different ignition. Rear shock and linkage are different. I would wait. I have a buddy that bought a std 4T a few years ago because he got a deal. His 2 previous bikes were Factory`s. He always rides one of the older Factory bikes when his boys are not riding them.

    clutch advice

I would guess you are good as lo g as you have a thumb screw to fine tune it your good.
  24. The El Trial was rescheduled for October 31st, and the Ute Cup should be fine as I am planning to ride both! Besides it`s my clubs 50th year too!

Did not see your last post. The fuel screw is in front of the bowl towards the engine intake, under the carb. That is why you need the thumb screw. And usually the dealers do not recommend jetting changes. The only reason I can reason is it is hard. The Beta owners manual showed the jetting changes for years, under competition jetting. The 4t always came lean for emissions.
