Pre-65 Bikes

Hi i have my FB being built currently and need some hints on gearing sizes. The engine is 8e 197cc and has the 4 speed box. I might replace with trials cogs but, if i don't what is a good front/rear sprocket combination to get a good usable 1st and 2nd? thanks

Hi all, hope my questions haven`t been covered before but here goes...I fancy having a go at pre 65 Trials, I`m 39, and up til a few years ago used to do a bit of trail riding on a modern KTM,and often made the numbers up in Mid wales enduro`s. I`ve got a `65 C15 frame (road) and engine in the garage and hopefully this would form the basis of my bike. I`m ok with gas bottles,even better with angle grinders and brilliant at leaving chuck keys in lathes.... Q1.. Does pre 65 mean a `65 bike is too young or is it from when machine production run began? Q2 what sort of mods should I aim for that would leave me eligible to ride with majority of clubs( hope that isn`t too vagu…

Hi, new to trials again and slightly out of the info loop as living in Ireland. Posted an intro which should explain most. Although there does not seem to be recognised pre 65 trials in Munster I do not see that as a reason to not try to prepare my recent purchase to it's potential. Last owner has done a fabulous job, but it is always difficult to know what is needed. My first instinct is to replace the items difficult to judge wear upon - needle and jets- replace plug and adjust tappets. Starts 5/6 kicks but would love to get it in 2. Info on expected compression reading would be invaluable as therein lies the wallet factor. My major concen at present is shocks. I have l…

Can anyone give me some pointers on a new B40 Project. I've been riding a pretty standard GB B40 frame forr a couple of years and would like to make the steering a bit tighter, anyone got any dimensions or offer any help? Hello all, I hope somebody can help, me and a friend are trying to get a tiger cub running, but we need some help with the Magneto, is it possible to build one or does it have to be bought off the shelf! if it needs to be bought where from? how much? it's a 200cc model if that helps. With a bit of time on my hands at the moment I thought I’d have a go at fitting may new ignition to the Cub and tidy up a few loose ends. I really need a new exhaust pipe but can’t seem to find any in stock with the usual suppliers. So is there anyone that knows where I can find a high rise. inside the frame pipe. Hi , I have a ex tom ellis c15 i am looking for information on . It has a pink/ red scrutineering mark on the frame that we have now identified as entry number 84 in the 1963 ssdt. This was Tom u Ellis entry number and i understand he did not finish due to injury. I am tying to get any pictures of this bike and rider . We have approached various photo archives but thought it might be worth asking on here for help

hi there can anyone help me has the b40 top yoke got any mounting brks on it for the clocks and such like as i have just got one with no brks on and i woundered if it was a compertition one can anyone help

Hi all I'm in the process of building new wheels and my dilema is axle diameter. The hubs dictate that I can use either a 20mm dia axle or 15mm dia axle, (bearing size 6004 2rs or 6302 2rs). I'm quite happy to run with a 15 mm axle in the front, but not so sure about the back. When the axle is turned up for the rear I won't have a spacer, just increase the dia to approx 23mm x 100mm between the bearings (ie a stepped axle) I would rather go for a 15mm axle, and am looking for re-assurance that it would be strong enough. Its for a B40 and I am approx 13 stone in weight. (I will have conventional spacer between the bearing in the front.) Ross

I have a problem with my B40 fork ( heavy weight ) When I put the Fork shaft into the Bottom tube the lower bush stops at about 2 inches, normaly ( at Spanish and japanese forks) I can move the shaft down to the ground of the tube..... What should I do ? Reducing the diameter of the lower bush a little bit ? I change no parts except the seals on the fork and before disassembling everything works fine......

Good morning folks, I spent a few days in Scotland at the beginning of the month watching the Pre 65 event and it's re-ignited my enthusiasm to get my 1960 C15 sorted and I'd be grateful of any advice. The rear frame loop where it attaches to the frame in front of the seat is welded which looking at the parts manual isn't standard as they appear to be normally bolted through a bracket between the tank and seat. I'm hoping that one day my entry for the Scottish pre 65 will make the ballot, would the frame as it stands make it through machine examination? I've fitted the smaller front primary drive gear and it has a 13 tooth front sprocket, the rear sprocket is 62 teeth …

Always a hot potato this one. Just wondered what the panel thought. I was over at a friends the other day droping some parts off and noticed he was rebuilding / refurbishing one of the local guys bikes. Now the rider in question usually already wins all the local events he enters but i did notice the ignition that was going to be fitted to the rebuilt engine. I was particularly interested as i am rebuilding a spare engine to put into my James. So what in perticular interested me? Well i am currently running a PVL system on the James and was going to fit a similar system to the new engine but the one that was to be fitted to the James my friend was preparing had a switch…

Does anyone know if there is a splined kickstart shaft available for the early distributor type C15 (Star?) engine? It's a 1963 engine. Really fed up having to drift out cotterpins every time I have to remove the kickstart. No matter which type I use they bend and really take some hammering to remove. The knuckle on my forefinger really hurting and being twice it's normal size thanks to the hammer was the last straw this tonight... Or I may have to investigate the possiblility of grafting a splined shaft from something else onto the C15 gear - or rather I will have to talk nicely and grovel to someone else... That sort of stuff is beyond my capabilities

I have a pair of Cub wheels fitted into my Panther trials bike.Amazingly the front wheel is the same sizes brake as was originally fitted back in the 30's.After spending a few hours stripping the wheels down to dry the drums and brakes after our very wet and swampy trial last weekend I noticed the front wheel bearings are a bit sloppy one side. can any one supply the bearing sizes so I can purchase some ready to fit after our next swampy trial.
