Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

The highly mentioned Ryan Young trials training DVD's are readily available, if out of stock in the UK. Both Basic and Advanced versions. Two methods, Direct at www.RYPUSA.com, via online/phone orders and charge cards $49.95 or about 31 quid. Post to UK is package rate at $14.95 or about 10 quid. 41 total. No Paypal. Indirect, costs the same at what equated today at 31 quid things, but I can get a bit better rate on the post and package at 3 quid, and I will accept the Paypal on it if needed, yet may take a bit longer at 34 quid. I am not available to run to the postal office on demand, so adjust. Normal post times are 6-10 days. I make squat on naut, so pick your pr…

Hi guys In the clubmans class, what skills are required and what sort of obstacles could I expect? Im trying to practice a little every day. At the moment, I can do locked turn figure 8s, get up and over a 50cm tractor tire and a 50cm high cement wash basin. My balance is getting better but is not fantastic (5 to 10 seconds). Anything else I should be practising? Ive only been riding for 3 weeks and my first trial is in August. Thanks in advance.

Last trip out I ventured down a dry creek bed and did a few dabs until I came to a 2ft6" to 3 ft washed away area that was a straight drop... and it was a two-footed 5 to take stock of the situation. MMMMmmmmm! I felt I might go back over front so chickened out. For me, rightly so... no need for any injury at this stage! I spent 5 mins piling rocks against the face at a 45 degree to enable me to go down the face for now and continue practicing riding rocks with minimal dabs. Remove rocks with more experience. You wouldn't believe it... as I'm moving rocks against drop-off face this voice from above says "Hey Mate!... No altering the section!!!" Thats right! My chee…

I live in Leeds, but will be in Scarborough most weekends until June this year. Where is a legal place to ride in/ very close to Scarborough. I do not want to join a club out there, just want some where to have a play. Cheers

Hello I am new to trials and after competing in my first trial 20th may I am looking forward to my second on Monday 4th June. I have been practicing and practicing in the field going round in tight circles left and right at a slow idle pace and doing quite well at that. The only time I find I have abit of trouble with and get bit worried about is when it is a slippery surface and I feel my back wheel sliping from under me. I have my rear tyre set so when all my weight is in it it is half way compressed but it still slips and always makes me dab! Is there any hints or tips you guys can give me to practice and improve? Many thanks chris

  8. Hello Folks, Just starting beginning trials training - have 30yrs of enduro/trail riding experience - C+/B- skill or so. My trials bike is a scorpa sy250. I am 6'1" and a "stocky" 220lb While practicing on the trials bike, I seem to have all my weight on my hands/wrists and I find it very uncomfortable, almost painful in my lower palms and wrists. I Know this is a broad question, but can anyone offer suggestions on what I may be doing wrong... bad stance? Need Bars Higher? etc. The the pain in the hands makes me look for any excuse to skip practicing and leave the bike sitting in the garage. I am missing out on all the fun of trials riding as a result of…

Thought I would share this 'top tip' with my Trials brethren which has been helping me recently. If I find my concentration going towards the end of a practice session, I'll start 'self-minding', ie talking out loud to myself about what I should be doing as I'm doing it. Curiously I find it most effective when I adopt a thick Yorkshire accent, specifically that of Martin Lampkin. "Come on Dougie! PerFECT! You've got about two inch. ForWARD!" Etc. it also helps that I practice alone so no one can hear me. Give it a try!

Hi All, I'm building a training section in the backyard, to get my skills up for the first comp's. Without being to an event yet, I'm building blind, and have a few silly questions. How wide are the boundaries, on an average novice section? What sort of obstacles am I likely to encounter? What techniques should I be working on? Does ayone have any pics of a novice section? Thanks for the help. Cheers Kem

I have heard that if you get your brakes hot and then throw cold water on them this makes the brakes really sharp. Any comments good, bad or indifferent? Thanks. Alan

Hopefully Billy Craig is still reading this this forum. In a recent fall I suffered a complete full thickness tear of the supraspinatus with retraction on my left shoulder (this is one of the rotator cuff tendons), there is also some damage on the infraspinatus. I will be having an operation to re-attach the tendon. Has anyone experienced this sort of injury and if so what sort of recovery have they made with regard to riding eg what % of previous strength was recovered, and how long did it take to recover, are there any protective braces that exist for the shoulder that are worth wearing when riding? Any advice/help would be appreciated. The quack tells me I shouldn’…

Folks, Apologies if this has been dealt with before but I'm new to trials. My 10 year old son and 14yr old nephew are riding beta's in junior divisions at the moment. We've had a few instances of bikes getting stuck on full revs ( for a number of reasons, (dropping, caught cables etc.)On a few occasions the engine kill button doesn't work ( I presume because the engine is so hot at that stage. Can anybody tell me what is the best method of stopping the engine when this happens ? Some suggestions we've heard are "turn the bike upside down", "Rip the carb off asap" or "block the exhaust with your hand and choke the engine" Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

hi peeps, ok bear with me, when i picked up my beta evo 250 the guy i bought it from did seem a bit clueless and there were several things he did not mention , al these were faults of course not any bonuses , but when he picked the bike up off the stand he put his hand underneath the silencer and lifted the bike up. to me the bike had no subframe and should have been picked up rom the back wheel as when i got the bike home i noticed that the bottom rubber mount on the silencer had broken in two. whos's right me or miss knibbs , how are you supposed to lit the back end of the evo up off a box stand TIA

  19. for 1-2 ft logs, I think I have been doing it all wrong. And it has really come to light as I try to do double blip. Basically I have been raising the from wheel with the intention to hit the top 1/4 of the log approaching the top of arc of travel of the front wheel lift. Then a buddy pointed out to me to try to land the wheel to hit the top 1/4 of the log, but **on the way down** of the arc of travel of the front wheel. As soon as I touch, another blip to raise the front again, to expose the back wheel and over I go. Attached are a couple of pics. What do you all think?

  20. Just been out for a quick pootle about in my woods...very lucky in the that respect. Been practicing very slow/stopping/start tight turns and when (it's never 'if' with me ) we go off balance, its always the inside foot that goes down. I've even tried to force myself to over balance on outside foot but my head just can't do it. ....I know the bike wants to fall 'into' the inside due to the physics, but then I should be allowing for this with my balance, but, I never over balance to the outside.
