Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by funtrials,

Thanks to Ham2's post, I found this weight-room video (start of video) of JT training in the gym: If you speak Spanish, the "related videos" on Youtube you'll see could be a gold-mine of riding info. Not sure how good this "Jordi Tarres" bloke is however, but he looks pretty good (almost as good as me) in those videos. We have a kid's video and it shows Bill Markam stretching his neck (among other areas) since "helmets are heavy". My question is: how important, if at all, is training or stretching one's neck for trials? Also, what exercises do you guys recommend for this? I train at a gym, but have never done neck exercises.

Hello TC people, I have a problem....I am learning to stoppie and move the back end around on my bike. Sometimes I can get the rear to lift effortlessly and sometimes not at all, what I'm saying is I don't know what I am supposed to be doing!!?? I am one of these types who has to get the theory/visualization straight in my mind first, otherwise I am just throwing myself at it pointlessly. I once went on a course that included visualization techniques ,I stood up and told the lecturer that it was all B.S. and it didn't work,he replied 'It does...you do masterbate?..don't you? ....I sat down. Back to the bike..how do I 'see it'...sink the back end??collapse my knees?? C…

Hi All, Got talking to a guy in pushbike shop today. He's an old Trials fan but never actually ridden himself. He told me that in days gone by that Trial riders used to fill their tyres one third up with water? ...and that some riders progressed on to using another fluid that would not slosh around so much when they came to a stand still. Can anyone confirm this myth and tell me what that other fluid was?.....I have no plans to do this myself but I am curious to know if it's true. Best of sloshy balance! Neo

  6. I'm starting a weight-lifting program, and even though I'll never be a Dougie Lampkin I'm just wondering how much a typical world/national level trials (or enduro/motocross) rider can "bench press". The one where you lie on your back and push the barbell up at a right angle to your body, with both arms. Also, how much can YOU bench press? I'm a bit embarassed at my own bench press figure, so let's just say that it has plenty of room FOR IMPROVEMENT (that's, uh, a good thing, right?) Some athlete by the name of "Tiger Woods" can reportedly bench 300 lbs. Tiger is what, some sort of massive sumo wrestler or something? Probably some massive NFL lineman or "Strong-man co…

At only my second trial yesterday I had a nightmare. Kept falling off on the hills, it was really getting me down, like I'd clear it one lap, fall off for a 5 the next. Then the next hill I'd fall off again, ir get stuck and take a 5. I didn't enjoy the day at tbh.

Entered my third ever trial today, which was a success in that its the first I've finished. My score was nothing to write home about, but I've noticed I was losing marks consistently on the same 2 things: 1 - Going down steep slopes - I had absolutely no control, and accelerated downand out of the section on a few occasions. I think using the back brake was making matters worse. 2 - Muddy hillclimbs - Just couldn't find traction despite having two new tyres. I tried to roll the revs on and build or carry momentum wherever possible, but hillclimbs that I could manage in practice no problem seemed to be much much harder within a the context of a section. Any tips?

Bear in mind I have only been riding less than 3 months, but I'm struggling with these rocks.. I dont know If I'm attacknig it wrong, my body position is wrong or what, On the second one It was near perfect if I hit my brakes, I'm only attempting the 3 rocks and the forth up the top I've been avoiding so far until I get it right with this. I've tried and tried and cant seem to get it right, and I have a huge fear now of falling off and injuring myself doing it which makes it all the more as I have to swallow my bottle and just get on with it. I've tried to give as many techniques as I could in some of the videos, practice different things, even put a few of my falloffs s…

Okay, so I just got into trials about a month or so ago. Wanting to try something different, I tried to track stand on my KDX220. Not too hard to do in the dirt, but beyond my ability on a hard surface. So who else has been track standing something other than a trials bike? Street bike anyone?

So I've been riding a trials bike for a short while now and some days I feel good on it and other days I feel like it's the first time I have ridden the damn thing! Recently I have been tackling a small section I built that entails getting on top of a felled tree trunk that is roughly 28inches high, and then turning immediately left to ride down two pallets and back onto the ground. Sometimes I can get on top of the log without putting my foot down, other times I can't get up at all! Now my question is ultimately what gear should I be using for most trials riding to tackle something like what I have set up, and how should I use the throttle and clutch to make it easier…

The japzap works well for medium height steps but at what height step would you need to use a different technique like a splat? I know there are different variables but lets say good traction and a plain vertical step. What height requires a splat? Im far from ready to attempt a splat but I would like to know what height to work towards using a japzap before I need to focus on a new technique.

  19. Hello Guys, I've just started trialling after spending a few years racing cars and I've got a big hang up telling me that I'll never be able to trial. I haven't ridden a trial bike before and it seems totally different to a road bike or Motorcross bike. I feel like I need to control the power with my clutch for one. Can anyone tell me where you went wrong and how did you get it right? Cheers Dean
