I have always had a desire to ride a trails outfit and, after many years of prevarication, I have finally taken the plunge and bought a chair. I am planing to attach it to my 1986 JCM 320cc. The bike has an air shock and I am hoping pumping it up to the max will make the rear stiff enough for the extra weight. There is plenty of information here about fitting but would welcome guidance on some specific points. I was going for a vertical bike/sidecar wheel. Should I be looking load the bike to allow for any sag in the suspension when in use? It is suggested that some tinkering to the mountings may me necessary to get the best ride. Do adjustable mount…

I made a start on my next sidecar project today. Been making the brackets and re-enforcing the front frame legs of a Beta Evo. Every thing so far is made from 3 mm flat bar. ether 30 mm or 50 mm wide. I will also be replacing the left hand foot peg hanger with one I am fabricating out of 5 mm x 50 mm flat bar. I will keep you all up to date with how things go.

Hi Guy's. I have promised Natalie James, that I will try and find her father Derek, and late uncle Ray's Ex works BSA Victor sidecar outfit. This is the one built firstly and ridden by Arthur Pullman. Derek has recently got involved again with the classic trials scene and spent the weekend with us at Stoneleigh, and enjoyed it immensely. He can not remember who bought the bike from the Round's but thinks they may have been local to the midlands. If any of you, Have any information or have, or can remember this outfit, in shall we say from the eighties, or know if it is still about today, Natalie and myself would be more than interested in meeting up with the plot ag…

I had a go in the chair of a friend's outfit when I was at Robregordo 2009 - great fun! I have just acquired my own outfit and am looking for events to ride in the SE of England. I could direct you o a solo trial in my ares every weekend but I have no idea where to find a sidecar trial, I guess it's 'being in the know' isn't it? Can anyone point me in the righty direction?

  13. How the hell do you ride these things!!!!! This morning I set off to the MOT station on my Suzuki SP400 and trials chair, along with two bags of sand as ballast. I now know that you can't brake and turn left at the same time. Anyway now road legal so off this afternoon with my newly press-ganged monkey in the chair and we soon come to terms with left and right turns on tarmac. I presume that the set up is something like as it goes in a straight line, but on right hand turns it under-steers and the front wheel hops sideways. On really tight right turns it feels as if the back end slides sideways under power. When we got the thing off road the fun really started! I do…

  14. Hi, A friend and I have done several car-based motorsport activities together but, for various reasons, would like to try trials on a combination. We won't want to do it every weekend but would like to compete with someone (even though we'll come last!). Are there four or five combination-friendly trials per year in Norfolk / Suffolk / Cambridgeshire? We're in Norwich but don't mind travelling. Also what would you recommend for a couple of beginners? Cheaper end would be good while we see if we like it. I'd like twin shock, just cos I like the look of them. Thanks

My bultaco has been the base of this project and its not quite finished but here is a few pics. Thanks to paul and bultaco uk for the help I first stripped the bike to a rolling chassis. Lined the chair up and prepped for welding Took lots of measurements and got the thing ready to be welded. More pictures to follow

Hi to all of you chair enthusiasts, I'm after some advice to get us going. I've ridden solo's to a reasonable level in the past but have been road racing for the last 20 years. For some reason my wife has desiceded that having a go a trials both solo and sidecar would be fun, (probably got something to do with me having two big crashes at the Manx Grand Prix in the last four years) we get a chair next week. I still have my old Fantic 309, my original plan was to bolt the chair onto this just to start with. However having looked round this site for a bit I am starting to realise how old it is! Since it's registered as a solo I'm thinking that I will leave it as is and g…

Hello can someone tell me how a sidecar trial is observed?

  18. Started by raygrilli,

Thought I'd share my new sidecar outfit. I made the chair as a close copy of a Rushton a colleague lent me that he uses with a Montesa. Tubing is 19mm x 1.6 and 25mm x 2.5mm. Chair wheel lead is 10.0''. Shock is from Falcon. Wheel hub is an unknown brand with 20mm ID bearings. Rim is 17'' x 1.2'm Honda Cub with tyre to suit. Brake is Hope. Swing arm is on nylon bushes and bronze sleeved shaft - thought I'd try without roller bearings and see how long it lasted...at least it won't seize with rust! Bike is a 2002 Gasgas 250 Pro. First outing last weekend was entertaining to say the least. Hope to do some club trials at Mansfield Maun and see how we get on...

I'm looking for a sidecar that can be attached to a Bultaco 199a. Does anyone have one or would be willing to make one?

  20. Started by John Hewitt,

Is there anywhere in the Yorkshire area that does pre 65 sidecar trials. I am a complete novice although I raced sidecar outfits for 27 years and now find I am missing being involved in some form of motorcycle sport. I have been in touch with a number of clubs and it seems no one caters for sidecars within a 3 hour drive of me I would even be interested in twinshock but it has to be sidecars. Thanks
