Does a 77-78 Alpina frame have the same geometry as a 78-79 Sherpa T ? Looking at pictures of a few frames on ebay the Alpina looks pretty much the same, but I wondered if the steering head angle was different compared to a Sherpa.

Hi I've recently fitted a Mikuni VM26 to my 1979 Sherpa 250 , unfortunately it appears to be run a tad rich. Its running a 35 pilot jet and a 130 main, I've worked the circlip on the needle all the way to the top notch and althought its now running a lot better its still rich and requires very little choke. What jet sizes are being used by anyone else with a Vm26 on a 250?

Hi anyone help with the chrome on my forks, just rebuilding a 199 for fun use then when I get the hang of these things again will start in local trails. Problem are the forks! There is some pitting in the chrome, they did not leak any oil when in use (before strip down) but will more use mess up the seals. Is it an expensive job to get them re-chromed.

Anyone help on this one, I have a 198a with an unstamped engine that works fine (but looks like someone has taken the number off deliberately!) found a pair of similar numbered engine "198a" casings to match the frame number, started stripping the unstamped engine that fits into the frame fine and just wondered before I get carried away if all the internals will fit into the "a" engine? I am told that some of the internals are slightly different but not to sure which ones. I think I need a shorter kick start shaft and a slimmer outer casing if anyone can help. Also is it good practice to change all bearings as there is 2 on one side and 1 on the other. Thanks

Hi, Just nearly at the end of Restoring my 198A. And I have a problem with the Amal Carb. I cleaned it out after soaking it in parrafin for a couple of weeks and fitted service kit to the carb but the bike will not fire up off the carb. If I tip a little fuel down the plug hole she fires straight away. I have fitted a new needle valve and checked the float is operating correctly, that is shutting off the flow of petrol when bowl is full. I fitted a new needle in the same position as the old one i.e in the middle grove of the 5 grooves. And if anyone has a list of the correct numbers for the jets that should be in the carb that might help. Any help or advice woul…

Hi All Getting on with restoring my Sherpa 198A and currently trying to sort out the carburettor. Stripped it and generally wasn't too bad except for worn throttle slide and a bashed about float chamber. Anyway jets and needle were as specified in the Owners Manual but as general detail is a bit thin I have referred to an Amal Mk2 Technical Manual available off the internet. Totally confused now so I'm hoping forum members can put me right. Attached pdf shows the needle jet, Carb Bits.pdfmain jet holder and main jet taken from my carb. Needle jet is the 2 stroke variety without the bleed hole but according to the Amal Technical Manual (extract on pdf) the m…

Continuing the Sherpa 198a strip down last night highlighted a couple more things! Both of the 19mm bolts securing the rear (cast) engine mount bracket were tight (didn't check torque), but there was some play allowing the engine to move slightly i.e. being cast the bracket wasn't a tight fit to the engine mounting lugs. I didn't want to tightened further due to risk of fracturing the bracket. Is this play normal or possible due to wear? Exhaust. Both silences are dirty, rusty and oily but externally fundamentally sound. Theres no indication (ie. welding) that they've ever been opened up and repacked, so can only assume they are as original and so will pr…

Hi all. Thinking about getting the frame powder coated. A couple of questions before I do. Firstly colour? Stick with the blue or go white? There is a frame lock stop missing, so do I chop the other one off or weld on the missing one? Footrests, do I weld on new brackets, for modern footrests, or will modern types fit on existing brackets? Any thoughts on this very welcome, cheers.

Help, I am in the process of road registering my 198 and want to wire in the stop light. i connected to the red wire from the stator, but when i press the brake the stop light comes on but the engine cuts out. i am guessing that the yellow or red wires are from the lighting coil. not getting any voltage from the yellow. My haynes manual only hints at the lighting circuit, can any one point me in the right direction.
