  1. Yes it is a problem.. when you can buy a small car on the road with 7 years free servicing and warranty for just a bit more it makes you wonder where we're going with our sport in general..However they only cost as much as buyers are prepared to pay..(this applies to just about everything in this modern world) and just to balance that I have my name on one.. provided I find it suits me better than current bike and it is available soon and the warranty support is guaranteed second to none. It.s a big risk to buy the first of any new model let alone a new Make...lets see how it goes.
  2. I'm also coming up for some kit going to find Alan Wright ,I believe he sells sensible stuff at sensible prices.
  3. I was wondering why the ruddy shock seemed to be mounted back a**wards.. (new evo)...looked to me like you'd have to remove the shock to adjust the damping..wierd..
  4. Good format for buying guide ..perhaps bike specific hints/ notes as addendums at relevant paragraphs ..provided we dont all get into my make is better than yours it should be a reasonable thing to achieve. PS when you read (let alone write it through an Iphone) it seems an alot of stuff to be doing /remembering to check..however it is all relevant to private sale..unless you can get the seller to warrant/ pay for repairs within a longer period of time than it takes to look!!!.thats pretty difficult to invoke with some new bikes.
  5. Looks like hard ice..what a great day out though
  6. Generally the importers are ok but if you are buying a bike with a view as to what might go wrong with it seems strange to me? Do you want reliability as your priority? Working backwards Trials started out as reliability test of the machine... The build quality of modern trials bikes !!!!!!!!!!! as many go wrong as go right.. I should know I.ve bought enough. Uk importers .well let me say that I have had discussions with lots of folk regarding their experiences when claiming warranty.. John Lampkin & Birks come out as the best from a customer service point of view.
  7. I'm sure you get some decent replies later on Luke; from memory (it was ?? a lot) of years ago....... they had a system to protect the internals of the gearbox... I keep visualising little sprung dogs like on a pushbike rear wheel sprocket drive which would break out if the gearstick was wacked hard it rendered sensible gear selection impossible but protected insides...if you get no answers why not go in from the gearstick side carefully. I also remember what a job getting the primary drive gear off the crank was.phew thats another story. good luck.. Ps hang on a bit for other guys to get to read your post and reply.
  8. The only thing I noticed after 10 pages of acrimony was a one liner; " I'm not the one trying to force "All" riders to ride to rules they don't want to " Many riders have taken the trouble to say they prefer no stop. Is it just one guy who is the intended recipient of this statement?. There is nothing within such a statement that resembles an effort to be constructive. I have to conclude without reading through 10 pages of posts that this is a local issue... I'll leave you guys to do your laundry in public.
  9. Why not just write them a note explaining what situation is..record delivery ..keep a copy..leave the rest up to them.It can't be illegal to write to them in plain english ..They apert from the obvious thing of collecting taxes are supposed to be civil SERVICE.
  10. Telecat you need to think about your argument before having it. Many times it has been made clear above that nobody is forcing all riders to do anything they don't want to. Calm yourself; The ACU decided for whatever reasons to change the rules for B.T.C only....many clubs and centres jumped on the bandwagon. You and our sport generally may benifit from understanding some of the contributing factors/ reasons why this has come about; I can only comment on what I am aware of it is as follows; In our centre I can say that most of the clubs and centres are kept going by a lot of hard work for nothing by older folk. I would expect this to be a similar situation in many other centres. Most of these old fogeys are begging for youngsters to get involved. Most of these old fogeys also turn out week in week out to observe because youngsters seem to think it's somebody else's responsibilty. The old fogeys find it increasingly tedious to have to watch earnest youngsters make a "pigs ear out of a silk purse" in the sections and then be expected to be fair or get argued with or at least criticised behind their back. In summary there is a problem; the point you are not getting is that those people who are giving and giving again for your sporting pleasure have reached a point of having given all they can for the sport they love with diminishing returns of pleasure. They are seeing (the purity or simplicity)of it decline to a point where only a few can do it properly and wanting to revert to something they know is workable. We should all accept that some form of stopping or hesitation is established or inevitable as a part of modern trials, we all know that it isn't practical to use extra (time) controls to encourage riders not to fanny about at local or even national level as does the WTC. In my post above yours I suggested that the keys to many of our problems are simple measures like marking sections where there is no benifit in stopping...like encouraging manufacturers to do some market research..(maybe we'd get better products), to promote sales based upon what most people are capable of rather than create aspirations of riding abilty few will attain. The simple measure you Telecat and others who want stop allowed would be to bring sympathetic observers every week...better still ..do that and go to the meetings ..get your COC licence..set out and organise in a way that you see it being done... I would advise that these are simple things to do as they are "in house" problems you may also have to deal with the real world of insurances, land..(owners). parking, neigbours, shooters ,ramblers.SSSI's.H&S..banking, tax..accounts..etc etc. PS old fogey is nice way to describe myself.
  11. I told my missus never to throw away riding gear it all comes back into fashion.
  12. Are you saying the ally has melted/vapourised? or the O ring(s) burned out? I.ve got through my share of O rings but only once (on a 305 Fantic Thursday morning of the SSDT) melted an expansion box/silencer.. and that was due to holding it flat out for several miles.

have you tried a spot of heat ? are there different materials in there that will expand at different rates?
  14. I remain of the opinion that we as a little Island can't simply ride to different rules to everybody else in the world. I also think that the key to ameliorate (speeling?) a large part of the problem lies in the marking out of the sections and the terrain available..for most trials it would also be a big help to know who was going to be riding. We are a minority of a minority so falling out amongst ourselves is the last thing we should be doing. Maybe a rule (It appears nobody can do anything without it being a rule) to the effect of everybody who wants to ride must provide some help. As an over 60 having ridden competitly for 40+ years it seems to me that youngsters generally would profit from and contribute to our sport by getting involved in making it happen on a regular basis. Something us oldies should remember is that youngsters are COMPETITIVE and are driven to proove themselves better than thier peers, they see thier peers on promotional videos,(manufacturers/Importers/retailers all have interest in this) indoor trials, WTC. as well as locally..perhaps this goes some way to understanding thier angst with the direction they see their sport going. The reality is that most local riders are happy to ride easy trials not too far from home and they will appreciate what is provided for them along with the fresh air and excercise..this is where our sport is flourishing despite all this stuff going on... this is where we should be concentrating our efforts.
  15. I with you Gizzas ..Amen... just spent all day ( along with 5 others) up at 0700 ..out marking out ..home 1600 setting out our clubs centre champs trial (it's the first of the year under no stop rules) with three routes in every section and tried very hard to make it all possible no stop... have yet to go back and do the route marking and mix and match sections and then turn up early on the day (next week ..we can't get on the land because of a shoot on the Saturday) to see if other land users have left our flags alone or if the weather wrecks it. It;s a lot of work and effort to cater for all abilities whatever the rules... assuming we can find 12 observers willing to stand out on the sections for 4/5 hours I hope they.re not going to get harassed by moaning never satisfied riders who seem to have absolutely no idea of what's involved in putting on a days sport for them. I will be riding in France on the 11th of Feb so have a good excuse for making space at the meeting to discuss the british championship. In light of todays experiences marking out and what the rest of the world are doing we have to have stop allowed and supporting classes with sections where there is no benifit from stopping and mere quality riders can enjoy, make a showcase for thier talents and be able to go to work the next day. We don't need every section set out to benifit stopping. It's been said before that the cream will always rise to the top but it's just not realistic to have sections that only 3 or 4 guys can master. Its an old saying/pearl of wisdom but easy sections marked hard are better than hard sections marked easy. Hope this keeps the discussion rolling.
  16. Arn't you going to tempt us by saying where you got it!
  17. Cheaper? The spring behind is a killer too a nice little knurled knob would be good, it must be quite an accuratly turned component at the oother end. Maybe a slightly lighter spring would allow finger adjustment without compromising its function. Having said all that I have not found it necessary to make constant adjustments as the thing carburates so clean and consistently...such a pleasure from the Mikuni(?) days. Finally somebody is bound to tell you to get a good quality screwdriver etc.
  18. i'm all for it,, think of it as social policing..savings for the taxpayer etc. I have to say in fairness to the scumbags who thieve property that just because a man wears a suit ,carries a briefcase and is acredited and licenced be he an insurance broker, company, financial advisor investment banker it doesn't make him any less of a scumbag. Assuming we know have the panacea for property theft (usually performed by dissatified "working" (LoL) class who wasted every educational opportunity they were given) how can we as conmsumers of the services of the white collar scumbags socially police them? Exploding check or credit card?...ghost of christmas past ,present.future. Perhaps playing both ends against the middle is the only way after all.
  19. Detering the scumbags is interesting.. maybe these alarm mines would be good under a few inches of sand in strategic place ..might give em sore nuts!! seems like a good idea might lead to prison though..would a device like this reduce the premiums?. Just cant understand why an Evo is un quotable when a rev3 or a gas gas is. surely Interested sellers of these bikes must read these forums and note that sales are being lost. Would it be possible for insurers to cover fire&theft risks as normal and road use on an ad hoc basis eg. every Sunday (1/7th of the risk) maybe first week in May etc. Somebody mentioned that our use is not near to riding around a major city or motorway on a dark wet night time..how you might convince somebody to underwrite such policies I don,t know. It seems to be an additional cost one has to bear if buying a Beta Evo..maybe this will also apply to Ossa,Jotagas (if & when we get to see them!),Scorpa etc.
  20. Here we are again and still no wiser! Want to get a new Evo for the missus.. new bike lady driver 50+ never claimed anything ..bike locked up inside locked up inside locked up inside locked up.. less than 300 miles a year mostly away from other traffic....(observing SSDT) want theft and 3rd party insurance. I have same bike and all same set of conditions exept i'm not a lady (LoL) For me with Bikesure fully comp prem, ium was
  21. Just to say I had a mate call round interested in trials.. he runs big honda road bike which is immaculate full of refinment & quality and cost him
  22. In my world (mechanical Eng.) you can often get away with bad design and good materials.. but bad design & cheapest materials would need an aufull lot of luck to make it reliable. Perhaps it's the same in this area? It's really ironic.. I mean trials started out as a trial of reliability rather than how many backflips and double axle twists the rider could make so say in the interest of marketing "the product". Manufacturers seem to be dedicated to save money on manufacturing processes and control in order to pay for this sales promotion which has very little bearing on the average paying/buying customer... ho hum it seems I'm in the minority of one with this kind of logic. Fortunatly for me I've had a real good innings and intend to keep on until I drop, I don't really care what future generations make of thier opportunities, it's up to them they're certainly not going to listen or associate with to an old codger demanding value for money.

    Golden Year

    2010/ 2011 not so good.
  24. Until it runs as smooth as possible on lowest tickover..... not (in my experience) easy to arrive at with the Dellorto..... engine warm (fan come on and gone off) start at c. 2.5 turns out from full in. Lots of thing may have been changed on your bike since new ...so maybe best to verify that you have correct jets ,needles ,slide, spark plug, air filter etc..don't ask me where/how!
