It is a bit of a knack. I was warned by the UK importers themselves when I bought my 300 new that they were not easy to start. But you can learn how to do it. Get the engine and kick-start to the best (highest) engagement position and...a good hefty kick, easier if you are up on the pegs. If you kick at the kickstart without engaging it with your foot first you may chip the cogs. That's about £150 for the two, and as noted above one is only a quadrant anyway. There is a demo short video on You Tube somewhere by an American guy.

The UK Daily Telegraph writes on 28 May 2014 on how children are now being denied scary moments on TV programmes though oddly he says not in films such as Disney's new 'Maleficient.'
Tom Payne the writer goes on to say about the tele...
"The world of Tom and Jerry seems remote; and how incredible it is that there was ever a programme called Junior Kickstart, in which small boys hurtled round muddy tracks on motorbikes, toppling over menacing obstacles for the amusement of other small boys."
Very remote ha ha, though I like the toppling over bit.

Nice camera work, love the drone!
And a lucky three.

"Bit muddy for a Spaniard... but aniway enjoyed a lot. Thanks to the motoclub."
Not much mud, even with rain, at our round in Hampshire in July, but plenty of second and third. ¡Grandes montañas blancas!

Bit off topic but...
Good to see the Russians managed to slip in an off road bike to carry the Olympic torch between space stations and seabeds.
This blurry screen capture is from the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.
Bit worrying that the background looks a bit like Chernobyl, but I suppose there aren't many noise or pollution issues there.

"Sad we can't make one here in the heartland of motorcycle trials.
I'm sure many would like to ride a home built machine.
Anyone know why Spain is a hotbed for trials bike makers?"
Easy.
An Iberian historic obsession with small motorcycles, having the climate and older urban environment that suits them. An understanding of 'flair' in design so that the engineering side is
combined with style in frame, plastics and graphics design. A local economic and political framework, that supports small manufacturing companies.
Currently Artur Mas, President of the Generalitat, Catalonia (i.e. Birmingham plus Manchester but more stylish and much warmer!) has appeared with the local trials fraternity.
Even El Rey, Juan Carlos himself was once famously photographed on a 'Taco.
The UK can do it with Formula One so it is possible here, and I am sure Princes William and Harry would swing a leg over a genuine UK bike at a show to help it along.

It seems a fairly pointless rule to me and one which won't encourage me to rush to buy a new bike in future. 'Your new Gasser Sir, of course its 9 lbs heavier than your current model.' Unless it's a few weights I can just hack off.
Trials worldwide doing badly has little to do with bike weight. More likely it's the general perception of motor cycles as 'bad', the eco lobby, the noise the damn things make and the fact the sport is almost invisible. Selling the sport exclusively to some useless minority TV channel is a pretty stupid idea as well. Watching what (very brave) nutters can do on Osets and T14s makes me wonder if petrol engines are all that necessary after all. A silent trials bike would open up a lot of new ground to ride on.

As Dan W has already noted, cleaning the glue off between the clutch pads is worth doing for the average rider, it seems to make the clutch more progressive and transformed a local 2010 250 Evo I rode recently which before had a very sharp clutch action.
-
A 250 Sherco is pretty easy to kick over. And no 'knack' is needed either.
-
The latest model Ossa 280i trials I rode recently had two red buttons on the bars, one for starting and one for stopping.
It started very easily. Push button, no throttle, kick, off you go. I tried it round the garden, just wearing trainers, and it was just as easy to start, it fired first time on each attempt. This latest bike (and latest mapping) felt a bit more powerful too, a bit more like a bigger Gasser, still smooth though.

El País, the national Spanish newspaper, reported today that Álvaro Bultó the son of Francisco Bultó has been killed in a winged flying accident. He was 51.
For 13 years he presented a TV show on Spanish television Frontera limete (boundary limit) a show about adventure sports.

I think what johnf2711 means is sometimes when you kick a bigger Gas Gas over it does not always appear to catch and spin the engine. I think that it is a function of the engine design, not wear. The Ossas I have tried have 'slipped' sometimes the same way. I guess it is to do with the way the bikes transfer the 'kick' into the 'spin.' Just a partial cog or quadrant not a whole circle cog perhaps?
Someone here with technical knowledge can explain I'm sure.
Also checkout Xui trials designs at Xui-rdi Engineering, in Girona Spain.

I think its the kickstart design as they do it from new, likewise Ossas (same engine designer) but not Shercos or Betas.
Hence starting is a bit of a knack.

There is the ACU Handbook which has the 'standing regulations' for Trials - no pun intended I expect.
Otherwise any of the books on Trials which have been listed on TC in past discussions.
More recently the books have morphed into Videos and DVDs.
Older books include:-
Motor Cycle Trials Riding Max King 1955 and 1972
Observed Trials Bernie Shreiber
Trials - A Rider's Guide Don Morley
Motor Cycle Trials Techniques and Training Lane Leavitt and Len Weed
Ride It! The Complete Book of Motor Cycle Trials Don Smith

I agree with 'jam' the 300 Pro is the one.

And the Montesa spares van was very small

The video is a bit crappy running on a Mac, (usual weird Mac and 'Flash' conflicts) but from what I could see I would have given Fuji a 1 on the first vid (benefit of the doubt) but certainly a 5 on the second, no question.

You should also check that the event permit and insurance details for you and the landowners have been completed satisfactorily with either ACU or AMCA.
If you need a hand with that contact me via TC. I am a club trials sec. Mick

The '08 ex works Sherco I owned had more grunt than the 'Cabestaney Replica' of the same period and considerably more than a bog standard 290. It was quite easy to tell the difference. The Cabestaney Rep model felt quite docile by comparison. Apart from the engine/electronics it was pretty standard though I suspect it had a modified swinging arm. Unlike the replica bike it had no wet/dry mode switch to vary the power. It did indeed have the dreaded Paxau stickers. Turned out to be very reliable over several years quite heavy use. Only the rear damper packed up.
