Twinshock

  1. Why did Bultaco and Montesa go under ...Was it the Fantic 200??. I know that Mr Ignato Bulto set up Merlin so his enthusiasm was still there. I know that Spanish companies get big tax breaks for the first 2 years, keeping Mecatecno afloat. A lot of these companies were set up by enthusiasts and not business men. Maybe thats got something to do with it?. Anyone know?.

A bit of advice or your views needed I have a 1982 Godden framed Majesty 175, which I fancy riding in a Twinshock classes at club Trials and maybe progressing further if I like it or my results are good enough. The bike is mechanically very sound and everything works fine, with all maintenance up to date with everything replaced as necessary. I've never trialled it, just ridden a few times at a practice ground. Cosmetically it's pretty good also with all the correct Majesty modifications and parts, the wheels were already respoked and fitted with new rims, plus IRC tubed tyres. It has a SM chromed front pipe (which some say produces more torque.......does it?) and new F…

Inspired by the photos of Big John's "works" Honda that were posted recently, I was wondering if anyone had any full works bikes or one off prototypes that never made it to mass production? To kick off...here's some photo's from Italian engineer Marco Mantovani. Back in 1984, Marco was asked by SWM to develop mono system for there 350 Jumbo. It was never produced, as the factory went bankrupt shortly afterwards. The twin disc set up was a few years ahead of its time when compared to say a Fantic 303 of 1987 vintage. Anyone else got anything interesting in the corner of their garage? Martin

hi i have an original 82 majesty 200 witch i need some info on. The fly wheel and crank are both scored pretty bad and keep sheering the key. From my understanding they both differ from a ty 175 so what did they use and where can i source parts. Is the piston the same as the 200 kits for the 175 if not what is it and where can i get one (i heard its a 250 piston with skirt cut down) the swing arm axle is striped i have a 175 one in there thats spaced out but gets in the way. i guess i could thread it down and cut it shorter but if i want to put the 175 back together i kind of need it And if theres any other usefully info about this bike i would like to know about i…

I have a very old twinshock TY250 in 1000 bits intending to "do someothing with"! - The frame is missing a few lugs from the look of it - what is missing from the right of the first photo? - I want to fit a new footrest kit to it - is there anything missing that wouold stop me from doing so on second photo, and where is best to get a kit - looking for something bolt on preferably, I got one from miller 10 yrs ago for my 175 so similar would be good. - I want to do the majesty mod and lay the shocks down, anyone any photos of the gusseting involved? I was told the mounts are just welded straight onto the seattube? - It has a Majesty alloy tank (although the bike obviou…

  13. TY175 Went into Acklams @ Harrogate (Beta & Yamaha) to pick up some New Yam parts that I'd ordered. I'd requested a brake lever arm for the rear wheel back plate (a 434 TY250 or TY175 part) The original item from 20 years ago was a heavy cast steel item, that corroded etc and weighed a proverbial ton in comparison to today's item. For the 21st Century Yamaha have produced an identically shaped offset rear brake lever in guess.........Cast ALUMINIUM. Beautifully crafted and shaped, plus in comparison to the crappy steel item.......it's a light as a feather. Why......... oh why didn't they make items like this in the heyday of Twinshock TY's.............if more …

Hi everyone. My Dad has bought a Yamaha TY175 and is currently rebuilding it. It looked as if it hadn't been cleaned for about 5 years, so he is cleaning and polishing along the way. He bought it cheap from Ebay, and although it was a runner it was a bit of a mess. To my mind it rode quite well, even with the gearing much too high, slick tires and rock solid rear shocks. We are a puzzled though, because of some of the bits. It has magnesium hubs which (to me) says it might have been a special model, or were these fitted as standard? The side panels are missing, and the exhaust is completely different to the others that we have seen. ON the plus side though it has…

Hi there, i am new to the sport and this forum, and need a bit of help: i have a 1975 ty175, and rode it the other day for the first time for a couple of hours. The engine didn't like to idle and kept stalling, which made steep descents difficult. I was low on fuel, and the problem doesn't seem to occur when the engine is cooler and just off choke. Is it just lack of 'pressure' from low fuel or something else? Also another elementary question - does the 'search' thing work on this? it keeps telling me i am using banned words (and i am not...i don't think!) cheers for your help

What have you been doing to prepare a standard machine for trials. My only mod to date is to lower and move rearwards the footrests. What else is worth doing? Do the wiseco pistons for yz/dt/it fit the ty what code number do I look for? Do Boysen have reeds for the ty if so what is the code? What gearing are you using. What carb jetting for a standard engine. Many thanks for youb help

I'm just back from a great weekend at the Nostalgia. There was a converted mono ty Yam riding in the twinshock class. This is the first one I have seen. Are they common down south? I'm not one for total originality etc but surely this is a step too far?

Finally,I have got round to staring a project I've been thinking about for ages.A long time ago I bought a totally stripped TY175 - because it was there. Then started looking around for an XT225 Serrow engine to go in it,couldnt find one.Last week I took one in to cover a bad debt.My idea is an alternative to a TLR,(which look nice but I could never ride them any sense)but with the added bonus of electric start. Tonight I cut the frame around enough to get the XT motor in and started sussing out measurements for engine mounts etc.Its a bit of a squeeze but it will work, and so far looks like it will make a nice bike.Anyway reason for posting is that the biggest problem I …
