Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Most people use a mineral 20/50 in the gearbox casing. Has anybody tried a modern synthetic or semi-synthetic bike oil suitable for wet clutches . I am particularly concerned about the effect on the cork friction rings between the steel plates. What quantities are people using. Have heard anything from .5 to a full pint. Any comments.

After a year of trying to get my cub to run properly,199cc Dellorto 22mm, (its always felt flat at the bottom and never felt like it would rev out),but after trying different carbs playing with and checking the PVL system i finaly got hold of an 'R' cam to try. On stripping the right side casing down to replace the cam i discoverd the problem, the cam timing was out by 3 teeth! the cam gear was lined up with a scratch mark and not the punch mark. I would presume that in this setting the valves were getting a bit close to the piston and this would explain the poor running(black plug, having to run strange carb settings to get it to run ok'ish) i am an average mechanic and s…

Before I explain this I should say that I am far from being a mechanic; I will service my bikes, changing oils and filters etc. and I'm happy to tinker with frames and suspension and the like but the hot oily bit in the middle and especially electrics has me bamboozled! Right, the Hardy Cub I bought about 6 weeks ago I have only ever ridden on my land and it has always started first or second kick and has run perfectly. I was due to enter my first Pre 65 trial today at Sowerby Bridge so yesterday I fired her up and had a few minutes tight turning on the drive. After only about 3 or 4 minutes it seemed to cough a bit when I went to lift the front wheel, like it missed sli…

  12. Started by superhondaman,

can anyone post a picture of their cub from the rear. Doing a final dry run before getting the frame painted & i have drawn a blank to remembering how close the right side wheel was to the shock compared to the left? i know the wheel does not sit dead centre but it looks well over to the right. The engine is out at the moment so i cannot check sprocket alignment. Batterys flat on my camera but will post a picture asap.

Managed to get a triumph twin that is trials ready but needs a few mods. What frame mods do most people run?? my wheel base is still 56" is it best to mod mine or is there a special frame available?? Shall i try and learn left foot breaking or convert to right foot break ?? I have ordered a throttle reduction kit as the bike is really fearse off the bottom. It has mp forks is there anything i need to know about them?? Thanks in advance Dixie

Just wondering how many people stick to Bantam forks when doing a Pre 65 Bantam trials build, are they usable? what mods if any? or is the C15 fork conversion a better bet? I've already got some Bantam forks (D7) so would like to use them if they're suitable, but if not I'll look for others, any recomendations? Thanks.

  16. Dear all, Im just interested if any of you know how people maintained their small ends in the period pre roller cage bearings and for that matter, today at 4-t, eg ultra thin BMW. Press in the new bush in place, Ive done, fine drill by adjustable reaming tool 0.01-3mm, Ive done. Maybe Ive done it wrong.... Think Ive read when order new small end bush for eg Pre-65 2-t, "you need to fine drill inner diameter by reaming tool once bush fitted to the con rod" .... Regarding a thin mtr bush 1.5mm eg like BMW, a very skilled man, 55y of expericence, claim that nothing but dismantling con rod from crank will do, -to be able to fine drill a small end bush in cod rod in a "mil…

Has anyone got any pictures of a widened swing arm that I can use to plan my alteration. I already have the original (wider) arm, but still have minimal clearance and hence want to make the alteration. Any advice gladly received.

Hi all, Got my engine in bits at the moment and while fitting an 18t crank sprocket, I`ve found it rubs on the casing, where it protrudes for the oil seal.1st of all, is this normal? I haven`t got the clutch back on yet so I can`t put a straight edge across, although the bearing hasn`t moved, the spacer is the same, and the new sprocket is the same width as the old one, so unless it was way out before, I`m guessing I may have to relieve the casing? Secondly, I`m thinking of drilling through from the drive side into the crankcase,, a la the `Rupert Ratio` book, to provide `weir` lubrication to the drive side and possibly improve breathing. Anyone have any tips or d…

I spoke to a bloke at an autojumble a while ago who specialised in Bantam parts, old boy from somewhere in the Reading, Berks Oxford neck of the woods. I wrote his number down to contact him and got a digit wrong. Does anyone here know the bloke I mean, he had supplied some parts for trials projects in the past. Any ideas?? Thanks.
