General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

  1. I went to start my '21 TRS RR 300 (120 hours engine time) today and found it was jammed. Weird, as it was running fine yesterday right up until I stopped it and put it away. I'd just checked the coolant the day before and it was still correct level so I was comfortable it hadn't cooked from lack of water. I also knew 100% that I had oil in the fuel - 140ml to 13L as I've used all along. I had heard a slight and intermittent rattle for about the first minute while it warmed up, but couldn't identify where it came from. I tried the screwdriver to the ear trick over parts of the engine and it didn't sound like it was coming from anything I listened to. I pulled off …

I would like to open up a discussion on the topic of section length/difficulty for sections where a rider has a set time to complete it in. Namely the WTC & British rounds. As an observation, I accept it is difficult for the course marker to get the section length right allowing for conditions/weather to change etc, for the rider to complete all the sections elements, and get out in good time. So when the section length (in time) is too long, I find it frustrating to see good riders 'paddling' their way out to ensure they get a 3 and not a 5 and not riding the section as the CoC intended. This is not good for the rider or the spectator IMHO. So... Yes, the time limi…

When I went to the Telford show recently, it was clear that over the early years of trial machines, there were many attempts at custom frame design/manufacture, with a few names still regularly spoken about on here. So it struck me, I am not aware of anyone who builds and sells custom frames for modern machines.( please put me right if there is ) Is this because the modern frame is so well constructed that people don't think they can improve on them, or is there just not the craftsmen about as there was 30 year ago? If you look at most modern frames, they can all be improved but..... at a cost. So, would people pay good money today for a custom lightweight frame for a …

Looking to buy one but seems there are various prices on these. Apico and Jitsie seem to be the most common, but is there anyone that is better than the other ?

Besides the obvious environmental issues, are there any drawbacks to running leaded fuel in a trials bike? I've been looking for higher octane fuels in my area and the only stuff above 92 is some 100 octane leaded that I stumbled across. Of course I won't be running it, but it got me thinking...is leaded fuel bad for a trials bike? All I can think of is, there's no catalytic converter to muck up, so theoretically, I suppose it's probably better for it than unleaded (again, not that I'm going to run it in my Beta).

  7. So heres a weird one for you all, I ride trials on my Gas Gas TXT Pro 200, but only one of the guys I ride with is on a trials bike (Sherco 125) We have both started riding some enduro and singletrack with some other guys we know who are on enduro and motocross bikes. Our bikes are coping fine with the terrain and we are both really enjoying it, but I have to say, after a few hours (and refuels lol) im getting sore from standing, it would be nice to have a removable seat so I can still compete in trials, yet be able to do some light trail riding on the side. Is there anything that would cover this? or will I have to make something. I have seen the Jitsie seat but it …

Instead of thinking isn't Raga's Christmas message nice I am left thinking he looks a right tool dressed up as a King. I think the double winning of the indoor and outdoor WTC has gone to his head. Any ideas for what he will be dressed as on next years card? The widow tw**ky or Dick Whittington perhaps. Rumour has it he is appearing with the Krankies in Christmas Panto. :santawink:

Hi, Can anyone explain a simple way to remove my rear Tubeless tyre from the rim, or do I need a special tool or take the tyre to a garage. Cheers, Frankie.

I currently have a '99 Gas Gas TXT 270. Love the bike, but want to upgrade to something newer. Here in my part of the US used trials bikes are very hard to find. As such, my Gas Gas is the only trials bike I have ever ridden. I don't even know anyone else that owns a trials bike. I have found two bikes that both sound like good buys and need some help choosing. 1st bike - "2008 Sherco 2.9 trials bike. This bike has been used easy for one season. The engine runs very strong and starts easy. The brakes are spot-on powerful. The suspension is top quality with a WORKS PERFORMANCE fully adjustable rear shock. The original rear shock is fine and is included. It has been…

What tire pressure, front and rear, should I run for different conditions. I weigh 13.5 Stone (230 lbs). I don't want to have a pinch flat but I want as much traction as possible. The conditions I ride range from my concrete patio, in which I place cement blocks, wooden crates, and, what ever else I can find to practice on, to ravines with grass, sand, and, roots. Thanks for any suggestions. Amateur Section Crash Test Dummy

Hi all, Just interested to know other people's opinions regarding the progress of trials bikes in the past 4 years in comparison to the 4 years previous. Is the difference between the 1996 model bikes and the 2000 model bikes the same as the 2000 to 2004 ? Is progress slowing down, speeding up, the same ? Ian.

Hey up! I'm struggling and wanted to understand the correct technique so i can practise and get it right Rookie mistake im sure It involves slopes I've come down a gully on a steep slope. Say 12ft high. At the bottom, i have to turn immediately and go back up the slope (up the next gully/other side of tree i came down past). I can get the bike round the "U" ok ish..(im semi pointing up the hill but not completely there) but at the point where im starting to go up hill with the bike still turning (bikes not completely straight up the hill yet) and i need gas to drive up the hill, if i open the throttle and the front pushes out and i dab. This is on wet or dry surfac…

Any suggestions on easy to kick over bikes? I've had the 315r for years and it is perfectly adequate, but my right knee isn't brilliant and it is really jarring to kick over, whilst not the end of the world gets a bit much if there are queues on every section. The 4rt is certainly a candidate and the betas with the kick start on the other side. Anything else worth a look? Just want something fairly recent to keep on wobbling round the novice route, max budget ~ £3.5k.

are the two holes on either side of the drain bolt on these carbs ment to align with the two slots inside the float bowl? if this is the only access for fuel to pass into the main jet, then i might have found the fuel starvation problem ive having on my 11raga. i took it apart for inspection/cleaning when i saw this, when the bolt is tight, the holes dont line up with the slots.i made new holes and i will try it tomorrow.

It's that time of year when I look to change bikes, for the last 4 years I've had 300 Gasers and they've been great, light with bags of power on tap. This year however I quite fancy trying a 4rt, I've had a few goes on friends bikes and yet being completely different to the Gas Gas, ie heavier with less power, I've always jumped off with a smile thinking maybe I'll try one. Has anyone made the jump recently and if so how does it compare long term? Did you swop back to 2 stroke or stick with the Honda? Let me know how you got on? Cheers Ed
