I have got SWM 280TL which runs OK for about an hour then fouls or buns out the plug. If I change the plug it then runs OK again. I am using a BP5ES plug. Any advice or possible cure would be great. JGM

Hi All, I'm building a 350 Jumbo for competition and was wondering if anyone has matched the cases on the motor? Did it make a difference? If so what difference? Thanks

  4. Noticed the brake lever arm being a little reluctant coming off when I was practicing on Sunday....did the usual 'remove the dipstick from the van and dribble a tad of oil around the arm desperatation trick'....its bad maintainance on my part, no excuse. The more keen eyed would have noticed two dipsticks in my van on Sunday, myself being the other. The old girl since being rebuilt 2 years ago (?), has only had the carb cleaned once and the gearbox oil dropped 5 or 6 times, in that time she has lead an 'on and off' life as my enthusiasm has gone from peaks to troughs...I'd rather lay on a Norfolk beach than do a trial in the summer and watch my 5 year enjoying herself…

Can you name all of the former SWM employees in the photo, taken recently at the Mont Ventoux Trial in France.

Has anyone tried removing the perforated tube inside the midbox to make it more like an expansion chamber? With the perforated tube in place it seems that the midbox is really just a muffler. A straight section of pipe would have virtually the same effect performance wise it would seem ,although the exhaust note would be a bit louder(but the bike 2.4lbs.lighter). I am considering combining a gutted midbox and a MX type rear silencer or custom aluminum replica SWM rear box to improve power( and save about 5lbs). I am familiar with making changes to the exhaust systems on piston port engines , but less informed on rotory valve engines, so I am not really sure if this would …

1980 320TL std: Typical having a great trial yesterday dropping but 4 on two rounds and on the 1st section of the last lap, just entering the section bike stops dead, as if I'd pulled the lanyard off....she had lost her spark After the lunchbreak when I started her she was running a bit rough, almost 4 stroking, turned her off, restarted and she was fine. Also the last few times I've jet washed her down she ran a little rough until I WD-40'd the ht lead...hmmm that was going thru my head as I started sweated cobs kicking her over. Did a few checks on the section before pushing her back in embarrassment... plug OK, points opening, took lead off cap and earthed, still n…

I've just become the owner of a rather sad and neglected TL320. (re-living my youth having last owned one in approx 1984) First of many questions to come - can anybody tell me the correct length of the rear shocks. Thanks Ross

I have trawled through the SWM threads and have come up with the following; Timing 2.6/2.8 BTDC Points Gap - 0.4mm Plug Gap - ? Help ! A few other questions - How do you adjust the timing, do you need to slip the magneto off and move the back plate and refit the magneto and check. Are there any timing marks to point the strobe at ? Ours seems to have some cold chisel marks on the backplate ! How do you connect an external condensor ? The only wiring diagrams I have found are in Italian and a bit difficult to read the colours etc. Finally, not getting any e-mail replies from Martin Matthews. Is he on holiday ? Many Thanks.

  11. Started by malcra,

over the last couple of months I've been getting through condensers rather too quickly, initially on my 320TL and now on the Jumbo. So done some investigative work and written it on my (mainly SWM) blogging website. SWM electrics I've basically not found the problem, but tried to eliminate the likely suspects, we shall see....

Hi all new here kinda. Short version I have ridden trials since 71 and still have a vintage trials OSSA MAR 250 and vintage enduro bikes, modern enduro bike and modern trials Beta Rev. In 1980 I bought a new 320 TL, rode for several years, left for a year in OZ and sold bike to a friend. Came back he had sold it and I could not find it again....wanted it back. After a few years gave up. Bike turned up on monday on e-bay, Vinduro group mentioned it....someone was looking for a SWM enduro, this was a trials bike. But it was just 15 mins from me so I clicked on the link. Wow looked like my old bike, more I looked at it more it looked like it. About 12 hours left on the aucti…

  15. I need a spark arrestor to ride in all the good places nearby. Every add-on spark arrestor I could find on the market would require me to hack up my silencer, so I decided to replace it instead. At least this way, I can preserve the original silencer, should I ever decide to restore the bike. This monstrosity would look right at home on a modern trials bike, but it sure looks out of place here. Sadly, it's also a bit louder, though not oppressively so. I was hoping it would be quieter. Oddly, the bike SOUNDS like a modern trials bike now.

Thought I was paying too much as Ebay ad said it didn't run,but by the time I did the "Buy It Now" he'd got it going.Engine sounds terrific! Runs beauty! So Smooth, quietest running 2stroke I've ever heard :-) Gonna need alot of tweaking to get it as effective as My Fantic 240,but progress is already being made, have clutch down to easy two finger/OKay but distracting 1 finger action, will try taking out a couple of clutch springs next.Brakes are strong, rims round, tires hard as stone ;-) no oil in forks, rear shocks leaking from not being ridden. Footpegs are miserable, will cut those pristine mounts and never tweaked(Or even come in contact with anything other than a bootsol…

  19. This 1983 SWM TL320 was located in California recently Many enquiries have been made to discover whether this is Bernie Schreiber's actual bike and the one featured in his observed Trials book. What do you think ?? http://www.retrotrials.com/a-special-report-on-very-probably-bernie-schreibers-1981-swm-tl320-trials-bike.html http://www.retrotrials.com/a-special-report-on-very-probably-bernie-schreibers-1981-swm-tl320-trials-bike.html

I have recently replaced the crank seals and also the large O ring on the disk valve cover but engine oil still seems to be getting through into the cylinder. Bike smokes a fair bit as a result. Does anybody have any ideas of what else I can do to stop the engine oil getting through?
